A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@HH: Nobody from A13 landed on the moon .... they looped around and came back without landing
  9:58am

The veteran commander of A13 was Jim Lovell, so it was expected he would get another shot, I guess. Instead he got to be played by Tom Hanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am
Handy Haversack:

YB: Right, but the astronaut corps wasn't that big. The expectation was that if they didn't land that time, there was still a good chance of doing so on another mission. But then we started deprioritizing landings, moved to the Space Shuttle, and then ceded space to private capital.
Avatar This Is The Modern World with Trouble Hellraiser 2024 9:59am
YETI BOB:

The Apollo missions were all "one guy stays on the orbiter (SM), two guys go land in the LEM". So there was always that one guy who made it most of the way to the moon, then had to hang out by himself while his buddies got to go play golf and plant flags and make famous quotes and stuff. (I have a lot of sympathy for astronauts)

YETI BOB:

This report from mighigan.gov is great!!! A few quotes (note, EGLE stands for "Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy", and the EGLE drone was brought down by an Eagle!)

From the report:

"Eagle populations have rebounded in Michigan. A 2019 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey showed 849 active nesting sites In Michigan, up from a low point of 76 nesting sites in the 1970s.

EGLE reached out to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to see if it might issue a citation or violation notice to the rogue eagle. A spokesperson said the agency has no mechanism or authority to issue corrective action notices to individual, non-human wildlife, noting it would likely take an act of the legislature to do so. Even then, it might be subject to a legal challenge. "Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do," the spokesman said. "Nature is a cruel and unforgiving mistress."

So the eagle really just made an editorial correction.

Yeah, we go to Western MI, near the lake, every year (except this one, damn it), and over the last 25 years I have watched eagles become, if not common, at least expected. Does it still count as having showered if one's dog proceeds to spend a couple of minutes licking every last molecule of soap off your shins?

At any rate, that was good hair-cutting music. I am shorn!

I live in a state with mail in voting. It's awesome! The state also provides a non-partisan published voter guide that is excellent. Ballots can be mailed or dropped off. I spend a lot of time driving in rural areas of the county I live in and have seen that drop boxes are pretty easy to get to. Boxes are typically found at libraries, fire stations, government building et al.

Trouble - that's awesome about the Coltrane house. I had no idea. Did you see the Maggot Brain mag cover feature on Alice Coltrane. It was cool but maybe not revelatory for Alice fans. There's an Alex Brown painting of ALice Coltrane in it that's pretty amazing.
