A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Trouble and everyone. Kerry James Marshall is great - I've seen a few shows of his work here in Chicago. I don't know the painting that's on the playlist today, but most of his painings are very large and are just overwhelming when you stand in front of them.

Ok, found it - this one - titled “Black and part Black Birds in America: (Crow, Goldfinch)” - is not huge, it's 27 7/8 x 24 3/4 inches. If you are interested in more about this great artist, here's his gallery page: jackshainman.com... , lots of great work there. Looks like he was also featured in the NYT recently.

On a bird-related note, I took up some recommendations from you all, from a few weeks back... I visited the Audubon center in New Jersey (Scherman Hoffman) and used the Song Sleuth app to identify a bunch of birds. It made for such a pleasant, lovely day. Highly recommended, and I can't wait to get a pair of binoculars and go back during migration season.

Nice, redbee! We went out to the Delaware River to see friends a couple of weeks back and saw some birds that are less common in north Brooklyn: grosbeaks (they left here when it heated up), goldfinches, titmice, chickadees, hummingbirds.

Suddenly thinking of how long it's been since I've been to a museum or art gallery (something I used to do a lot). Lately I've been walking around the city photographing graffiti, trying to get my art fix. There's some pretty great street art in and near my neighborhood.

HH: I love the Del Water Gap, really incredible birding there, and such a variety of flora as well. I think I've seen grosbeaks there earlier this summer. I've not yet seen a hummingbird on the east coast, that's awesome! Glad to hear you had some good sightings.

With the help of using the Song Sleuth app, I realized that the hawk I thought I was hearing near me in central Brooklyn is actually a blue jay impersonating one. At the Audubon center I was able to hear a blue jay and a hawk screaming at each other (hah), the difference is subtle...

Audiobook recommendation: "Sigh, Gone" by Phuc Tran, a memoir of being an immigrant kid in PA in the 80s. If you're having trouble paying attention due to quarantine brain, this is good, since it's a series of funny, sad episodic segments, well-told, but also all connected. Great narration.

Quarantine brain ! I was starting to benefit from Buddhist podcasts from Audio Dharma (download some Silence ??) ...& somehow being locked down @ home with nothing but time destroyed my attention span - like @ first dealing with symptoms, I believe - & just clinging to News reports ...like Just Get Thru This ...we thot it might pass in a few months & maybe come back in Autumn ...it just got bigger from misdirection ...

Native of Portugal, here. "D" is "D." no matter what. Brazilian Portuguese has heavy African influence in the spoken language. So, difference is mostly about phonetics, not structure. Basically, it's Portuguese with some jazz added to the mix, making it a bit more melodic....and less rigid.
