A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@HH: Pynchon used to be on the list but he has slipped a bit. And when I was younger I devoured everything by P.K. Dick and Stanislaw Lem. But I don't really read much sci-fi any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am

@DIL: I was much more taken with the first book than the other two.

Someone recommended New York 2140, which is a great and long read and book that shows political *work* of and by people (though KSG's characterization is maybe an acquired taste!).

Also recent: Charlie Jane Anders's _The City in the Middle of the Night_ similarly shows the work of new and difficult politics.

And _Amatka_, by Karin Tidbeck tries to glimpse through the singularity to see what might be on the other side of Revolution.

Phillippe Bastille:

Yeah, I think Chandler gets overlooked due to the genre but that man can paint some word art:
“Man has always been a venal animal. The growth of populations, the huge costs of war, the incessant pressure of confiscatory taxation – all these things make him more and more venal. The average man is tired and scared, and a tired, scared man can’t afford ideals. He has to buy food for his family. In our time we have seen a shocking decline in both public and private morals. You can’t expect quality from people whose lives are a subjection to a lack of quality. You can’t have quality with mass production. You don’t want it because it lasts too long. So you substitute styling, which is a commercial swindle intended to produce artificial obsolescence. Mass production couldn’t sell its goods next year unless it made what is sold this year look unfashionable a year from now. We have the whitest kitchens and the most shining bathrooms in the world. But in the lovely white kitchen the average [person] can’t produce a meal fit to eat, and the lovely shining bathroom is mostly a receptacle for deodorants, laxatives, sleeping pills, and the products of that confidence racket called the cosmetic industry. We make the finest packages in the world, Mr Marlowe. The stuff inside is mostly junk.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am

@DJ Guin: You're probably right, though I was thinking that a post-apocalyptic novel might have the same strangely comforting effect as listening to sad music when you're down. Nah... Chandler sounds like the ticket. Plus some of the recommendations above.

@D in London. Cormac, for North Americans at least, I think, sorta draws you up close and demonstrates that you've fallen OFF the ledge already, quite a while back. @allanToronto - That's a good summation. I remember that scene in Outer Darkness where he lands the boat and sits around the fire with a group of unsavoury characters. It just seems a bit of a symptom of the underlying thinking (or lack of) that has made the present situation so difficult, when I see folks identifying with stories, like The Stand, about apocalyptic plagues. This is NOT that, this is the kind of not-apocalyptic pandemic disease event that will continue to occur once every few generations or so. We just don’t seem to have learned that lesson very well, or learned to prepare and plan well for the (actually routine) arrival of these things.

@P-90...President SprayTan sez things will be just ducky by Zombie Jesus Resurrection Day. We have already surpassed the workdwide toll of H1N1 (which lasted 20 months) in a shorter span. THIS is not a FLU. There are no 'cures' for viruses. You either survive or you don't. Antibiotics are over prescribed and just result in newer, resistant strains of Staph, etc.

Anti-biotics are just that. They are living organisms (bacteria) that destroy other bacteria. A virus is a chemical structure (not really alive), so antibiotics have absolutely NOTHING to do with viruses. This seems to be a huge basic misunderstanding of basic science that many people adhere to.
Avatar 10:52am

My point is this going to much, much worse before people take it seriously. 1918 was a flu; 500 million contracted. 50 millions succumbed. Even with 'modern' medicine, we have become arrogant and reckless.

Short stories? Alice Munro, Chekhov, Flannery O'Connor, William Trevor, and my go-to comfort reading, Borges. @David: Christ Church Spittalfields, St George's Bloomsbury, and St Mary Woolnoth. It was the pre-Google Maps 90s and I have no sense of direction, so it's a miracle I made it to those three. Even physicians prescribe antibiotics for patients with a cold for instance, for a virus, Why? Because the patients insist, and medicine complies for some reason....is it really evil big pharma sell, sell, selling? It has no effect whatsoever on ANY virus, and in addition, it constantly exposes all know bacterial pathogens to the few known antibiotics, allowing them to evolve resistance to them, because bacteria produce a knew generation about every 12 hours, so their time/evolutionary scale is much accelerated compared to that of other organisms on this rock. It's insane really.

Melinda - important to keep bacterial and viral infections separate in your mind. SARS-CoV-2 is a virus and viruses are not living in the way that bacteria are. @Melinda. Yes. Factory-scale animal farming is brutal to animals to the degree that anti-biotics are used extensively to keep them alive. Those cows are chained standing in steel milking pens, on concrete floors that can be hosed cleanf, so under theri own weight their hooves split open and become infected (they have no choice but to stand in faeces all day)...so yadda yadda yadda...this stuff's in yer milk, yer meat, etc.....I know, this is a big downer...but you're right, industrial scale agriculture puts a lot of antibiotics into your food and water
