Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Funky16Corners:

It is indeed Franco! 57 years young!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay, that tells me a lot about your particular slant on things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Funky16Corners:

Hmmmm, how so? Good? Bad? Terrible?
Avatar 10:07pm
Erica:

Younger than I thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Funky16Corners:

I must be one of those old souls they're always talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm

I found this Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown LP on Wand in what basically was a head shop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well, when certain songs infected your brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

@Jeff - Lucky! I've been looking for a while. I only have the 45s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

Erica - That is def Sonny and Cher in the fur vest and striped pants
Avatar 10:20pm
Erica:

It didn't look like Sonny though.
Avatar 10:21pm
Erica:

Also, will we hear "Reach Out In the Darkness" by Friend and Lover, another boy/girl duet from the 60s? If not, just asking. I won't request anything else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Funky16Corners:

No Friend and Lover, but lots of other cool things
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Parq:

Having lots of fun watching Larry's playlist gif cycle through on the top of the page and on his three playlist posts. Cool effect!

Thanks NGH!
Avatar 10:25pm
Erica:

I'm also used to seeing Sonny with darker colored hair too Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

This set reminds me of the show Love Connection. One time, the host, Chuck Woolery was trying to ascertain why a particular hook-up went off the rails. The woman looked at him and said levelly in her own defense: "Chuck, I was looking good in my fur coat!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Sadly, Chuck has gone off the rails of late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

This might be heresy to some, but I like version of California Soul by The Fifth Demension better.
Avatar 10:39pm
Erica:

I looked up the image of the Storybook Children LP by Very and Clay and Billy Vera looked like a new waver who traveled from the early 80s into the 60s. Haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - That was the first version I knew and I rate it pretty highly
Avatar 10:40pm
Erica:

His taste in fashion was ahead of its time, I must say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Billy Vera had a great show on KCRW back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
coelacanth∅:

i do too Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Billy Vera is a serious scholar of R&B and jazz, Big writer of liner notes for the Capitol Records reissue program for years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

The We Five cut out the line about getting sick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
chresti:

a feeling in my shoe
Avatar 10:43pm
Erica:

"I got drunk and I got sick." Never heard that lyric before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Funky16Corners:

But they made Ian and Sylvia a fat chunk of change!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - This is the original
Avatar 10:44pm
northguineahills:

not sure why, but this Ian & Sylvia is grabbing me....
Avatar 10:45pm
Erica:

Interesting Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

The We Five were very good, but Ian And Sylvia were great....and so good looking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

I have to dig out their country rock album, when they were the Great Speckled Bird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Franco Twinkie:

Those Vanguard album covers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes! Underrated!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

Very much of a Great Society vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

They only did a few 45s but they're all cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

I'd follow you anywhere, Grogan. Happy birthday, Sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

How about Blackburn and Snow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Doug! Thank you! It's been a good birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Nothing by them Franco. I'm only vaguely familiar with the names
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

Oh man, just you wait.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
chresti:

Shoes filled with lead!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, those lyrics are crazy! Screw your eyes back into your head!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

Suede jackets, dilated pupils and long, long hair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
coelacanth∅:

wow i've never heard that version of come on in...and it's probably the original right?
Avatar 10:57pm
Erica:

Why does the song Come On In sound familiar if it's rare?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Funky16Corners:

It's a cover of a Music Machine song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Funky16Corners:

THIS is the original version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Franco Twinkie:

Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

oh i guess i've known the original. i'm so used to you playing the original versions of everything....
Avatar 11:06pm
northguineahills:

@Larry:Is it like no other gadget, that you've ever seen, does it start to spark w/ a shake yo the ground, the music machine only makes this sound, it goes,"Whirrrr Whiirrrr, chicka bum-bumps, Whirrrr Whiirrrr, chicka bum-bumps, if you want to hear a song, sar Whirrrr Whiirrrr, chicka bum-bumps"

Or were we talking about the Talk Talk album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Ha coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm

@NGH - The Talk Talk guys
Avatar 11:07pm

Can't wait to hear which Smokey and his Sister track you play. They make me swoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Been enjoying the tunes Larry. I’ve been reading a new hardcover of reprinted Love and Rockets material. I love the Hernandez brothers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
nostrangerer:

Fun show. Tramp by Otis and Carla is the only one I expected. The majority of the rest have been lesser known versions of known tunes or lesser known tunes by known performers. Fun show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

I was with an ex-girl friend when we met Sean Bonniwell, the writer of Come On In, at her band mates house. Recently I asked her if she ever saw him again. She said only once, they went to the county fair together to see George Jones....who Sean had never heard of!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Positively 4th Street by David Hajdu delves into Dylan, Joan Baez, Mimi and Richard Farina. It’s a good book. Can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years since I read it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Bonniwell was an interesting guy. I had a chance to talk to him briefly back in my fanzine days. He'd found Jesus (and martial arts) but was still pretty cool
Avatar 11:21pm
Erica:

I like how it sounds like two songs combined and edited together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - That's a great book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

@erica - Some Velvet Morning is a very heavy and very weird record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Funky16Corners:

@nostrangerer - Thanks! Glad you're digging it!
Avatar 11:22pm
Erica:

Especially during the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doug - I picked a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes. I remember. Sean was a Christian. When I met him he had long greasy hair and wore socks with flip-flops on a very hot day.
Avatar 11:26pm
northguineahills:

Yes, I did xtian musicals as a kid and still remember all the lyrics....(then puberty hit and voice went to shit)
Avatar 11:26pm
Erica:

@Franco So he was basically Jesus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Socks and flip flops?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Jesus with one black glove
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

Erica, we never got into it, but I got the impression he had a lot to say on the subject
  11:30pm
Johnzon:

cool show concept, thanks for the tunes & information dj larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Johnzon! My pleasure!
Avatar 11:30pm
Erica:

Good and Plenty were actual last names?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm guessing that they were pseudonyms, but I haven't been able to find other info
Avatar 11:32pm
Erica:

I'm about to say Larry.
  11:33pm
Johnzon:

isn't there a candy called that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

There is indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Franco Twinkie:

Larry, was there a band called The Count Choculas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Not that I know of, but I'd bet they're out there somewhere, gigging with the Frankenberries
  11:36pm
Johnzo:

"Good & Plenty was first produced by the Quaker City Confectionery Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1893 and is believed to be the oldest branded candy in the United States." and one of the lamest(sorry liquorish lovers)
  11:37pm
rw:

The Count Choculas are my new favorite garage band. The Frankenberries suck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm with you Johnzon. Good and Fruity all the way for me.
Avatar 11:37pm
Erica:

Don't forget the Boo Berries too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

all i'm sayin' there better be a band called cap'n crunch
  11:37pm

Boo Berries rock.
Avatar 11:38pm

Speaking of which I saw Count Chocula, Boo Berry and Frankinberry cereal at Walmart this past Saturday already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm

Boo Berries, Fruit Brutes, all of them played at Cerealstock
Avatar 11:38pm

Frankenberry, sorry.

even as a child i wasn't tempted to try a chocolate flavored breakfast anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

Oooh, I loved Cocoa Puffs, some might say I was coocoo for them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
coelacanth∅:

and for the record i liked good n plenty; didn't care for good n fruity.
  11:42pm
Doug Schulkind:

Bonus Smokey!!!
Avatar 11:43pm
Erica:

Since we're talking about cereal, anyone want to mention when they had cut out records on the boxes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

I too liked Good 'n Plenty. It was my ritual movie matinee candy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Cereal box records!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - The Banana Splits, Bobby Sherman, Josie and the Pussycats, all (I think) appeared on cereal box records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Yeah, you cut the record out of the back of the box
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay, after my time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
coelacanth∅:

bobby sherman: little woman, i think. my mother wouldn't wait for me to search through the boxes for easy come easy go.
i forget what cereal it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Funky16Corners:

They were on Post cereals, like Sugar Crisp and Alphabits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Funky16Corners:

Maybe 1969/1970-ish
Avatar 11:47pm
Erica:

They were before my time but I've seen them on blog sites and whatnot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Funky16Corners:

I might have a few knocking around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i really wanted a banana splits flexi, but my mother wouldn't buy whatever kind of cereal it was on. she only bought sweetened cereals if they were on sale, and refused to buy certain ones at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Funky16Corners:

That was the rule in our house, too. Living under the tyranny of puffed rice (blecchhh)
  11:50pm
rw:

I've got the Banana Splits singles. I think I sent away for them with boxtops and maybe a dollar.
Avatar 11:51pm
Erica:

At least it wasn't Rasin Bran Larry. Haha!
  11:51pm
rw:

And I sort of remember cereal box flexis. You would cut them off the back of the box, right? And then you had to tape them down to the turntable to keep them from slipping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
coelacanth∅:

oh we had shredded wheat, total, cheerios, grapenuts, corn flakes... and all 3 chex cereals. i went through dozens of rice chex boxes, collecting "the lindburg line" model cars.
  11:52pm
rw:

I have a buddy who did a book on cereal boxes. I bet he's got some. He would know at least.
Avatar 11:52pm
Erica:

Raisin Bran I meant. This chat room needs to have an editing system similar to Facebook, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Funky16Corners:

@rw - Right on both counts. I have the set of Banana Splits 45s that you had t mail away for. The other records got cut right off the box
  11:54pm
rw:

Used to love Grapenuts with a ton of sugar added on top. F16C, are your Banana Splits singles as beat up as mine are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember one that was square or something, and the corners of course would curl up and whack the tone arm off the record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Funky16Corners:

They are clean enough to DJ with but in fairly beat looking shape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

Speaking of free stuff with food: In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, when Cliff booth kicks Bruce Lees ass, in the back round on the wall of the sound stage are cartoon posters of Laurel And Hardy. Smaller versions were folded up in Fritos corn chip packages in the sixties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
Funky16Corners:

I miss the little rubber Frito Banditos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah we didn't always have sweet cereals but were allowed to put as much white sugar on them as we wanted.
  11:58pm

Rubber Banditos!! Weren't they erasers or pencil toppers or something?
  11:58pm
