Hey Larry. I’m here. I’ve been listening to Gary for a few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Matt! I'm listening to Gary, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I went over to my friend’s house earlier to help him prep what to me seems like an absurd amount of meat that he’s going to smoke tonight/tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m not even sure I’ll be staying there long tomorrow afternoon as it’s supposed to be in the mid to high 90s with lots of humidity. His backyard doesn’t have enough shade.

@Matt - I don't think any amount of meat can be described as absurd as long as you're smoking it

Larry, when I'm at my mom's house and she's really driving me nuts, I duck out to the Thai restaurant by her house and get a seafood curry loaded with mussels to set me right. I go back to her house a different man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

I used to get a Thai seafood stew called talay sarm rod. I haven't found it on a menu in years

There's work I should do tomorrow, and a separate definite commitment I must keep for a portion of the day. No holiday freedom. No picnic. No party. Just my spirit draped in the red, white and blue bunting of self-pity. Maybe bike in latter part of day and meet someone for the mobby music and fireworks scene on the waterfront. I'll stand up on the grassy slope and shout, in the manner of Robert Taylor in the Colosseum crowd in Quo Vadis, "Citizens of Maine! I WORKED today!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Funky16Corners:

As long as you shout it at the fireworks, all is not lost

Checking in to see what's going on. Sorry to say I'm playing an old Jorma/Jack record, so I can't listen just now.

For those who care, I blame Steely Dan for the downfall of rock 'n' roll. They were close to the very worst.

A friend of mine saw Roling Thunder in MA in '75, and asked me this week -- he couldn't remember -- if I was there with him, because he thought maybe he saw both of us in the Scorcese film. I didn't go to the concert. If I'm in the movie, I think Marty's creating "deep fake" video clips as part of his whole documentaire elastique approach to veracity and twisticity.
  10:37pm
Dean:

I have no accumulated wisdom. It's a day to day thing, man. But I really don't get the affection for so many of the lauded artists like NY. I don't like...for example...Nick Drake, Elvis Costello, Can, Scott Walker...the list goes on.

On this night in 1976 we went to see the firework show in Capitola. On the way back to Santa Cruz the two lane road to the harbor was blocked by two giant bikers beating the shit out of each other right in front of our truck. When their bodies hit the street, you could feel ground shake.

My first vivid memory was when I was asked what b-day cake I wanted for my second bday, I asked for a Pooh-Bear cake.

The first time I was big enough to use a big boy potty at age 3 (a normal toilet), I climbed on, and accidentally peed across the bathroom into the bathtub. since, none got on the floor, I walked out whistling dixiie.

My father was in medical school in the military, so I would rarely see him. My mother would take me weekly to the library, and I gravitated by age four to non-fiction, especially reference books. (hence the dork I am today). All I would do would read, or somehow try to nearly kill myself in woods/swamps.

No. Brainard died long ago. But the book endures, and rightly so. It is precious, priceless, perfect...

Here's part of it in PDF: https://sites.evergreen.edu/statements/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2014/09/I-Remember-Joe-Brainard-1.pdf

Yes, geezerette, it is wonderful almost beyond words. But in the end it is all about words.

The smell of the tiny white summer flowers on the hedge around our yard and elsewhere in local neighbrohoods when I was growing up -- as an adult, when I walk or bike into that smell anywhere around here or on Cape Cod, it elicits almost a soft gasp and sigh of unusually deep potent nostalgia, a summer smile and compelling sad air at once.

I don't know how old I was, but we were driving down Pacific Coast Highway and there was this truck selling peanuts on side of the road with a big hypnotic red and white spiral going around real fast. I still think about that truck

Thanks for telling of that, s b/p. i know those events. profound. sometimes even freshly cut grass does that to me. i guess there's a certain "weed" in the lawn that makes it similar to the house we spent most of summers at when i was little.

I was referring to the track listing Carmichael. I'm in New Jersey. I will be going to be after the show.

Yes, geezerette. That's it. I can't urge others strongly enough to read it. It is sublime.

smells permeate to the brain directly without passing through any process of analogy so they can trigger memories conscious and subconscious without the distraction of thought.

I remember driving over a hill in San Francisco on a brilliant blue afternoon in 1967 and seen Alcatraz in the bay and hearing Blindman by Big Brother on the car radio. I thought in was called Show Me The Way for years until I got that first record. I still love that song.

Bravo. You won't regret it. Brainard understood how to use small, ordinary words to produce strong effects. He also simply thought about the world clearly, plainly, without pretense. Ultimately, the book is poetry, rich in rhythm and sound. I adore it. I even wrote a paper in law school about it.
