I went out to check the mural tonight and there was still people hanging out by it playing Dr John music. It’s been a nightly party for the last week.

Another tribute show I see. Sorry to hear of Dr. John's passing.

I saw a pic of that. Looked amazing

Hey Testify! Getting pretty fancy with your avatar, Larry..

Hi Erica! I could not let the good Dr's passing go without a tribute. He's really important to me.

Good evening from cold, rainy Wisconsin! Possible frost up north tonight. We could use this NOLA heat!

@Erica - That's Dr Teeth, modeled on none other than Dr John!

I’m also sad about lil buck sinegal passing. He was fucking awesome. A brilliant musician and a humble chill dude. I got to know him over the years as he played at every single Ponderosa Stomp leading the house band.

..it's my understanding (if I'm right) that, even after Dr. left his night tripper persona behind, he still identified with voodoo spirituality. [?]

I was going to walk across the street and get a jelly donut, but I think I'll just hang out here and have a pile of goofer dust with my coffee.

@Erica - After he hurt his hand, James Booker taught mac to play the organ so he could keep working
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Matt from New Orleans:

We had a cold front today. Only got up to 84.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

The only time i ever saw Dr. John, it was a trifecta with Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. I think James Booker was pounding the keys in his band that night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Funky16Corners:

That must have been cool!
Avatar 10:24pm
Erica:

I must say Larry, that James Booker taught Dr. John well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Franco Twinkie:

Insane is more like it, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
coelacanth∅:

greetings Larry and all

...rest in peace, Dr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Dr John over 30 times. Almost all of them in the last 15 years. His band wasn’t great for a time in recent years as he fired all the old timers and put his then girlfriend who was decades younger in charge of the band. It didn’t work and lasted a little over a year before he ended the relationship and the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I think Dr John must have been predestined to play the piano. His talent was so prodigious and he only took it up because he couldn't play guitar at the level he wanted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Funky16Corners:

I derive a lot of SATISFACTION from this record...cough...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth∅:

(i don't think you were the only one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Funky16Corners:

You could probably do an hour or two of thinly disguised rewrites of Satisfaction
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

And what about whatever the Stones ripped off in writing Satisfaction Larry. That’s a band that I like but they had no problem ripping off musicians they loved and taking songwriting credit for it.
  10:36pm
Doug Schulkind:

Ooo poo pah doo, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Some night I'm going to devote a show to songs ripped off by big name rock stars. There are tons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
coelacanth∅:

as far as i'm concerned anyone who jacks a 'stones riff and doesn't get sued gets props.
  10:39pm
Dean:

I think we're way too overwrought about "ripping off." I mean, Bach, Telemann, Handel...c'mon, it's how you create.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm talking about wholesale theft, not inspiration or homage. The kind of stuff that gets people sued (successfully).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

and it is a pretty basic riff -like the melody on "he's so fine"; basic stuff. i mean it's not like anyone could get sued for that...
Avatar 10:42pm
fleep:

owning a set of tones in a certain order is absurd to begin with but we pay people for smearing paint too
  10:43pm
Dean:

Wholesale theft: as I mentioned, Bach, Telemann, Handel, et al. There are compositions credited to each that are (arguably, okay) wholesale theft. We give way too much credit to "individual talent."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The Stones are ridiculously litigious and that’s where my feelings lie on the issue because of it. The whole bittersweet symphony lawsuit was tad much. At least they finally did the right thing and gave Richard Ashcroft back some of the rights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
coelacanth∅:

well bands like the stones and even more so led zeppelin and peter paul & mary didn't just derive elements beyond the possibility of not being conscious of it; they did other people's songs and put their names under them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

Sue Me, Sue You Blues - Jesse Ed Davis. Bookmark it for later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I beg to differ, but a conversation for another evening perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

Matt, i will never forgive the stones for that, and vocally promote stealing their music when possible.
  10:46pm
Dean:

My suspicion--and that's all it is--is that the bands (except for U2 and Metallica) don't give a flaming poop. It's their "handlers" who challenge the infringers. Consider Springsteen, who invited folks to tape his shows, until Jon Landau became his manager.

Yep, for sure, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
chresti:

Hey, I can smear paint, where do I apply@fleep?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Franco Twinkie:

Cher could rock, yes indeed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

Before Cher got all Variety Show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

but people with power, like Jaggar and Richards, can step in anywhere along the way and stop the (at least in the case of bittersweet symphony) cruel insanity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm a big fan of early Cher. Great singer, great choice of songs and great productions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

This was head band Cher, not curly wig Cher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm

and in that case whatever judge who ruled in favor of the stones (or their publishers) should be put on a raft in the middle of the pacific.

Wrong singer ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
coelacanth∅:

that was "half-breed" Cher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Allen Klein was the real villain. He reneged on an oral agreement when he saw the song was doing well. The record label should have gotten the clearance in writing before releasing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
coelacanth∅:

and i had no idea the good Dr. was involved with the cake
Avatar 10:54pm
northguineahills:

Thanks for the tribute, I'm out in 10 minutes! Faved the episode...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

Alan Klein, talk about people that should be put on a raft...and set on fire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

oh they didn't get it in writing? i never read that crucial detail.
...yeah with a guy like klein involved that should be a no-brainer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

Man, that Cher album smells a lot like Boz Scaggs' first, personnel-wise, released the same year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - I saw that in the listings tonight. I couldn't believe that they were still playing hockey in the middle of June!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - The Boz was recorded in Muscle Shoals with Donna Jean Godchaux on backing vocals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Franco Twinkie:

Regarding Mick Jagger: Is it any surprise that he went from consorting with Alan Klein to hob nobbing at Davos? He obviously retained some thing from his days as a student of economics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Franco Twinkie:

That sounds like Mr. Booker to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Funky16Corners:

Jagger and Richards are a couple of snooty art school millionaire dilletantes who think they're pirates. That they happened to have made some amazing music is a saving grace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Jessie Hill’s daughter Judy mom of Trombone Shorty and James Andrews owned a bar called ooh poo pah doo that I used to frequent. Ms Judy is a cool lady and a great host. Unfortunately she lost the bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I think in this case it's just his influence. I don't think Booker was in LA for the recordings

Without a doubt. John Broven wrote an excellent book about the owners of independent record labels in that era Larry. It’s called Record Makers and Breakers.

Larry -- Loving your tribute to Dr. John! Quite educational!

All the misinformation about Jagger/Richards and such on your playlist? Meh. Not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm

Jerry Wexler was a serious piece of shit. He even looked bad in his autobiography, but the book about Bert Berns sealed the deal for me.

maybe not. i think he tried to get the beatles first but had to wait for Brian Epstein to check out before making it happen

Dean:

I have the Boz album, but didn't realize DJG was there.

I don't know enough about the Stones' background, their misdeeds, etc., but I remember a silly ad hominem book about The Clash not being genuine punks, because they were art school educated. That's not an argument.

(Full disclosure: I didn't read the book.)

Huey P Meaux licensed those LA Mac, Jessie & Shirley recordings out to Wand & Chess. There is also a Crazy Cajun LP from the sessions & he licensed the My Children 45 to both Wand & Chess with the Wand 45 being pulled from release (I think). Typically ridiculous Crazy Cajun antics!!!

coelacanth∅:

most of it's out there, checked and triple checked for the public record.
and the fact that Jagger and Richards claimed total credit for songs they didn't write; and Jagger fucked Mick Taylor over -and over -and over -is enough for me to accept the other allegations as beyond feasible. (as well as the bittersweet symphony theft, which is fact)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Funky16Corners:

I just realized that Dr John used the phrase 'brain salad surgery', and this came out the same year as the ELP record of the same title!
  11:27pm
Dean:

I'll just add, recognizing that we're celebrating and mourning the life's work of Dr. John, that all of our snide, gossipy, and in my case mostly ignorant commentary is the water in which he and all of the greats swam. He can handle the derailed conversation. We still love him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

Larry -- That's fine and all.

I just think thst most folks commenting on the ABKCO/Bittersweet Symphony legal case have not spent any time reading any documents regarding the case, copyright law, or art appropriation. Mike Sin makes a very important point. Sometimes these disputes seem -- and are -- bogus. But typically they can be mind-bendingly and mind-numbingly complex.

Mike, is there a JD following your name by chance?

Man, he really could play piano for a guitarist

well, one thing is a fact -jagger and richards' names are under the song, and they did not write it. and they're filthy rich already when the verve were in dire straights and that song was their ticket out.
other facts are that the use of the strings are 1) barely recognizable/ not at all recognizable to most people 2) not written by jagger and richards.

Matt from New Orleans:

He became a professor and the next great New Orleans piano player. Davell Crawford probably is the current champion. He’s Sugar Boy’s grandson.

New Orleans piano is whole other thing. Just amazing.

how many times did beatles songs get slightly rearranged or riffs used outright? 1000? 2000? 5,000 times? did they ever sue anyone?
nope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Matt from New Orleans:

The Stones didn’t sue. ABCKO did which the stones have no control of.

Check out Bryan Wright's Rivermont Records for historical and contemporary recordings of NOLA music.

Matt, i know; but i do think they could've stopped it - being abcko's biggest money-maker, they'd have some pull. maybe not. but they certainly could've objected to the lie of putting their names as writers.
