I suddenly had a feeling and looked down at the lower right of my laptop screen and saw it turn to 9 so I quickly shut off mixcloud and hightailed it here. Thought I’d be late but was early.

From the I still hit myself on the head dept: In 1975 Sir Doug was playing at the Palomino in north Hollywood. I thought I should go, then did something else, something really stupid I'm sure. Later, I read a review of the show in the L.A. Roky Erickson appeared like a spirit and shrieked You're Gonna Miss Me. A picture appeared of Roxy wearing a Jaurez tee shirt.

I was also with my mom..and dad...and sister when we were driving into San Francisco in August of 1966 when You're Gonna Miss Me came Booming out of the car radio, and then continued to be in heavy rotation, along with Got to Get You Into My life by The Beatles(Revolver had just come out) You Can't Hurry Love by The Supremes and What becomes Of The Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

It really is a perfect AM car radio song. Short, sharp and to the point.

@Kris - I've been watching a NZ TV show called Nothing Trivial, sort of a dramedy, and in an episode today a 60-ish guy namechecked Ray Columbus and the Invaders!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm

@Kris - I had to run it back to make sure I heard it right. He went to visit a woman and was impressed that she had an autographed Ray Columbus LP
Avatar 10:49pm
Kris Holmes:

Ray Columbus actually wrote the song The Crunch for The Challenge but did not appear on the record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

@Kris - No shit? That's funny. I just picked it out at random on Prime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

@NGH - Just listen for the lisp. That tells you you're listening to Rapp!
Avatar 10:51pm

Ray Columbus is a household name for us, saying you have an autographed Ray Columbus LP is like you having an autographed Frank Sinatra LP?
Avatar 10:53pm
Kris Holmes:

He is not an underground figure like he is here in the US
  10:53pm
Carmichael:

Scanning the playlist, digging it all. Roky found peace somewhere, and we get to hear this again. All is well.

The drummer for the band I played with in West Texas had a High School band in Houston that opened up for the Elevators c.66/67.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

The Avalon my guess. But The Matrix did have an encredible room tone. Now it's a fancy restaurant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

@Kris - Did he share any stories?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I can't believe the provenance isn't more solid. THe stuff I've heard is good quality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Funky16Corners:

@Kris - The first I heard of Ray Columbus was back in the late 80s/early 90s when someone issued his collaboration with an American band called the Art Collection
Avatar 11:02pm

Considering trivia is the only thing I'm good at these days, and the only way I can drink (My team usually wins), the show looks like it will resonate w/ me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

It's interesting. More drama than comedy, but the characters hve really grown on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Franco Twinkie:

The Avalon is not that big and has a lot of drapes hanging on the walls, so who knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

This is very old testament.

That's cool Kris. What was the band's name. Do you remember?
Avatar 11:08pm

"Tryin' to, tryin to..."
Avatar 11:09pm

he did tell me the name & it was something suitably ridiculously psychedelic but i have forgotten it

That electric jug is so friggin bizarre. I wonder how the guy doesn’t eventually pass out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm

I am watching a John Wayne Western with the sound off and 13th Floor Elevators is the perfect soundtrack.
Avatar 11:10pm

Ah well Kris. Still a cool fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Funky16Corners:

You can hear he's winded when he talks on TV appearances
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm

The New York Times did a good piece on Roky this week AND that paragon of integrity, The New Yorker as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Which one?
  11:12pm
?:

How does that E-jug work anyway? Is it just a mic in a jug? I've always wondered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Funky16Corners:

It's him blowing the jug holding the mic right up to the opening. You can see him do it in some of the TV appearances on Youtube
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Jeff Ash:

@Larry -- Chisum.

rw:

That above ? was me. I guess I should look more at the YouTube.
Avatar 11:15pm
Kris Holmes:

you can actually get pretty close just going "biddabiddabiddabiddabidda" with the sound of your voice into a mic without the jug :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Funky16Corners:

An answer record!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Franco Twinkie:

I found an old ceramic jug full of spider webs in my moms garage, washed it out and gave it a whirl. Didn't work for shit, but then, I was not blazing on acid at the time.
  11:17pm
rw:

FT you need the acid to get all those tones. Otherwise you'll just get a single note.
Avatar 11:17pm
Kris Holmes:

it's all about technique, not just anyone can play the electric jug straight away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Funky16Corners:

It really is pretty crazy when you think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

I see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

he actually didn't blow into the jug like a jugband jug player but he sort of "scat"? sang into it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
coelacanth∅:

(...held the mic up next to his mouth)
  11:24pm
rw:

Oh! So the jug just created the Reverberation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
coelacanth∅:

yes, the Reverberation
  11:24pm
Carmichael:

I always thought it was a Fishman style pickup that was inside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Funky16Corners:

I think so, though I wouldn't be surprised to discover that there was echo/reverb on the mic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
coelacanth∅:

for easter everywhere they put the mic in the jug
  11:27pm
Carmichael:

My band needs both rhythm and lead jugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

I want a whole jug section
  11:31pm
Carmichael:

Acid makes you think of electrified jugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm fully willing to believe that Tommy Hall came up with the jug when he was flying on acid. Who knows, did he start with a garden hose, move on to a watering can and land on the jug?
Avatar 11:36pm
Erica:

When you're high, anything is possible, especially electrified jugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Franco Twinkie:

That commercial is on Epitaph For A Legend, along with a goofy "interview" with Roky, that was broadcast on KSAN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

I got it off of the big 10 CD boxed set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Is that the interview where he calls the band the 13th Floor Alleviators?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Funky16Corners:

That horn section is the weirdest...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

I can't remember Larry. But the DJ asks him what his favorite Sex Pistols song is and he says Hot Cars(!?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm

C'mon, that's EVERYBODY'S favorite Sex Pistols song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
chresti:

I heard window pane, earlier..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Funky16Corners:

I walked down to the sidewalk, the night was crying rain
I heard wandering thunder like a crash in someone's tin
I can tell from the lightning's flashing that the storm would not refrain

The wind blew through the treetops and I saw some windowpane
I heard someone down in the alley a little voice called out my name
I saw the ghost of our wrecked romance it was lost in the pouring rain

Well I'm going back to the country
Up on the mountains up on the rising side
And if you should ever leave me
Send me a letter with some love inside

Where are you? Married? And in a good place?
I need to know to be satisfied

I walked on through the darkness, the night still pouring rain
The wind blew through the treetops and I saw some windowpane
I saw the ghost of our wrecked romance, it was lost in the pouring rain
One thing I have learned in my time in the skies and on the ground
All the fires changed motivation, yet I burned to love that sound
