Strangely, Jim Doval and The Gauchos also cut some records that could be classified as surf music. there was this weird animosity between surfers in L,A. in the sixties and some Mexican American kids(not me!) it was very real.

@Franco - You are correct!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Regarding The Atlantics - i think they were referencing Atlantic Blvd that skirted East L.A. and ran all the way to the beach and cut through many Mexican American communities.

They were actually the Sinners, the house band from Hollywood A Go Go. I have no idea if they were contractually prohibited from recording using that name or what, but they sound like they played live a lot, probably at every club in Hollywood

I told Marcel et al when I got home late last night from trivia, but a women came in that was friends w/ one of my trivia partners looked off. It turns out her ex stalked her there to the bar, so me and her friend shielded her, and I just engaged in friendly conversation and tried not to do anything that could be construed as flirty, as the guy looked like he could destroy me. After she two beers, I saw them off in a car, and hope all went well. I was scared, but played it cool.

Seems an iPod is irrelevant these days, unless they went for a higher end sound (there are boutique audiophile music players out there). Otherwise, why not just use your phone for music (as my kids, and most folks out there, do).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm

It was so funny when a lot of vatos went "hippie." We lived next door to some real hard ass drug dealers in the sixties. When they moved in they were total Lincoln Heights cholos, but then acid came in. It was our neighborhood sit com.

I didn't think the iPhone handled high rez files...you must use a different music playing software on it. I thought it still had a limit on size of files (24/96), but I'm not sure it's easy to tell those from higher bit rate files.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

You are correct it won’t output more than 24/96 using vlc but on the go it’s doubtful you’d be able to notice the down res from 192 kHz if your files are at that rate

I bought some in ear headphones from a company called 1more that has built in DAC and plugs into the lightning port. They were fairly reasonable for the sound quality. They discontinued the model I purchased. I wasn’t trying to make it more complicated with a DAC dongle and the headphones plugged into that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm

I've hooked my players to external dac/amps (have a set up with an iPad 3), but it's easier to just use the Pono or Pioneer in most instances.

NGH! Totally! I just dug out a box of 78's this morning for later study.

"Effin" is for people who are too scared say or don't feel like saying the actual F word (at least that's how I see it).

I’m Irish, so cursing is our native language. Ye feck, yah.

@11.40 Matt -though it seems most women who cring at "the c word" have no trouble calling a guy a dick

Just tuning in, and I see there's a thread pertaining to foul language, a topic near and dear to my heart. Very encouraging. I tell my kids my favorite local bus line is the F San Francisco, because, well, "F San Francisco!" They know well what F means. As for euphemisms, I prefer "friggin'" to "effin'." And did you know that "euphemism" is a euphemism for "bullshit"?

It does seem amazing to get FMU out there, I can barely get it on Staten Island (unless you stream via phone or something along those lines).

@Matt: My car stereo gets WFMU from my phone. I'm technically barely in peninsular FL (thank ye goddesses, I could deal w/ the panhandle).

One sentence about one thing leads to a conversation about it Dean. Can't mention what you've had for dinner and we end up talking about food restaurants lol.

The best swearing is in Spanish. Check out WPLJ by the Mother of Invention. Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black are beyond hilarious.
