	8:07pm northguineahills: There's an elderly Jamaican couple that makes amazing Jamaican cuisine in the ghetto here for a good price (and it's the real thing, and make their own scotch bonnet hot sauce (if you ask), like I remember from Bed-Stuy). 8 blocks away in the trendy student district, there's an expensive "Reggae Shack" that is.... meh....
	8:09pm Funky16Corners: My buddy in DC is married to a lady from Trinidad, and he took me to some cool, REAL places down there. I don't know if I'm ready for scotch bonnett hot sauce, but it was spicy

	8:21pm Funky16Corners: I like heat, but only so much as it enhances flavor. We eat Vietnamese, Thai, Korean all the time and I try to cook spicy here at home but never too much. My fave hot sauce is still green Tabasco.

	8:24pm Funky16Corners: Though I should say that one of my all time faves is the spicy Vietnamese beef soup

	8:26pm northguineahills: I'm at the point, I rub my eyes after cutting ghosts, it's just annoying to me. Ghosts have a good complex, almost citrusy flavor, Carolina reapers are nothing but pure heat, w/o much flavor. I usually mix in jalapenos and my poblanos to make a more flavorful salsa....

	9:09pm Funky16Corners: I can't imagine why they would. I just dig finding female players because it's a male dominated instrument
	9:11pm fleep: What are the female dominated instruments?
	9:12pm Erica: It shouldn't matter WHO plays any instrument as long as you CAN play it.
	9:13pm Funky16Corners: @Fleep - I don't know of any. @Erica - You are correct.
	9:14pm Dean: There aren't necessarily female dominated instruments, though there may be, but Hammond celebrities of the XY persuasion easily outnumber the XX.
	9:15pm Dean: That, I take it, is sorta the point.
	9:15pm Funky16Corners: In jazz especially during the classic era, 40s/50s/60s there weren't a lot of female players that got the kind of shine they deserved. I can't think of a single well known bebop or hard bop player. You have Mary Lou Williams and Melba Liston early on, but in the 60s you started to see women moving into the forefront in jazz for the first time.
	9:16pm coelacanth∅: i have a recording of Leadbelly explaining why he sang smutty songs in the early days of his career it was because the piano was a females' instrument and he "didn't want the feminine thing on" so the smuttiness was to counter any ideas that he wasn't manly.
	9:19pm fleep: Pianos as a female instrument. I guess because prior to recorded music, daughters were expected to play piano for the household?
	9:19pm chresti: Harps, keyboards...females
	9:19pm Funky16Corners: Or because pianos were in the house, as opposed to something you had to go out and get.

	9:21pm Funky16Corners: Before the late 50s you saw women mainly as vocalists or sometime pianists. Moving on you started to see folks like Carla Bley (composer pianist), Bobbie Humphrey, Dorothy Ashby, Toshiko Akioshi, Joanne Brackeen etc
	9:21pm Dean: Earlier today I read a review of a mass by Josquin (and others) based on a 14thC French folk song with filthy lyrics. The reviewer--who knows his shit--suggests Renaissance composers made this kind of "juxtaposition [of] holy texts and those expressing earthy humor to envision the range of celestial creation."

	9:44pm Dean: He won a scholarship to Berklee when he was young, living in New Zealand. I think he joined Woody's band not long after graduation, but it's hard finding albums on which he plays. His arrangements are easier to locate.

I can't think of a single well known bebop or hard bop player. You have Mary Lou Williams and Melba Liston early on, but in the 60s you started to see women moving into the forefront in jazz for the first time.
	9:16pm coelacanth∅: i have a recording of Leadbelly explaining why he sang smutty songs in the early days of his career it was because the piano was a females' instrument and he "didn't want the feminine thing on" so the smuttiness was to counter any ideas that he wasn't manly.
