Brit psych is soooo, I dunno, like British breakfast cereal - familiar and peculiar at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m surprised that Steve Winwood never got the moniker Little Stevie Winwood considering he started his career super young as well and he went by Stevie in his younger years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Don't...that is...

none of these versions are familiar so far, but i knew several songs by their covers before i'd ever heard of traffic

Doc, for a minute I thought Donut was an English band I missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
doctorjazz:

Haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Doctorjazz: I think "donut" is an excellent substitute for "don't." I often use "otter" in place of "ought to." As in, "You otter change the radio station back to WFMU."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I would totally buy a Vyvyan Heavy Concept Album. Very metal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
doctorjazz:

In think Winwood did get called Little Stevie some early on. But, there was a famous little Stevie (Wonder) out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - There was a UK popsike band called the Crocheted Donut Ring
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

@Doc - I think you're right. He was 14 when he started out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

at one point in my childhood there were 5 versions of feelin' alright in the house, between my older brother and myself.
(3 dog night; rare earth; grand funk railroad; Joe Cocker; traffic)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
doctorjazz:

And this song Feelin Alright, is one of the best written 2 chord songs ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Jeff Ash:

Many fine covers of "Feelin' Alright" to choose from, including that Lou Rawls version.
  10:28pm
rw:

Iggy Pop should cover that song, Feelin' Alright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Funky16Corners:

It probably kept Dave Mason financially secure for a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
doctorjazz:

Buttermilk Bottom??!???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

Stevie Winwood and Rebop Kwaku Baah were going to team up with Arthur Lee and Jimi Hendrix, but then Hendrix went did something else...oh yeah, he died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

and though generally speaking Mason wrote a small minority of my favorite traffic songs, he did write feelin' alright - and another of my faves: house for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
doctorjazz:

Yeah, Franco, he screwed Miles Davis too.
  10:31pm

This playlist may go down in history as the one with the coolest band names. It'll be in the running at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

Wow, what an overdue theme. Traffic really deserves a lot more love than they typically receive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
doctorjazz:

We're pretty much in the earliest Traffic stuff. Have to admit, once Winwood went solo, didn't pay much attention (Low Spark was the last, not counting Blind Faith).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Franco Twinkie:

I can honestly say I despise traffic, but love Traffic.

All those 45s and Lps, I'm drooling (messing up my phone).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

Woody Herman was not afraid of putting on a paisley scarf.
  10:45pm
Dean:

Alan Broadbent joined Herman's crowd around this time. I *love* Broadbent as pianist and composer. Once hired his trio to play a celebration at the public library where I worked. It was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

i once mentioned to another drummer stream radio host who said he never got into traffic and had never been tempted to that i thought he'd like some of it (as if i'd know)
i wonder if someone of more authority than myself might convince him to check into it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Funky16Corners:

Woody was exceedingly hip, and kept a hot band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm

"Moves of Vegetable Centuries" is my new favorite album title of the week. And digging the Woody -- still searching for relevance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm

@C - I wonder what the sticking point was? Not digging the jazz stuff? Or the psychedelic stuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry i don't want to reveal who! and if i reason out why i thought he'd like it i might, so...
but maybe it was just a bad taste from all the commercial stuff that came later, and the earlier stuff that maybe got played on classic rock stations? (did it? i don't know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Nice to see you here, Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - If he/she was close to my age, they probably caught a LOT of Traffic on the radio as a kid. I loved it. Some folks might have gotten sick of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Parq:

I'm sure Woody and his arrangers were inspired by the BS&T version. In fairness, I also think of that as the definitive version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
coelacanth∅:

haha Thanks Franco but i can say this person is miles beyond me in certain realms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - This is a really good album. Featuring Mick Taylor and a couple of the guys from the Average White Band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
doctorjazz:

I've said this before, but I always disliked Mann, but hearing him often on FMU, I've gotten to really like him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

@Parq - Woody sdid a bunch of other cool things around the same time, including a cover of Sly Stone's 'Sex Machine'
  10:52pm

The video for Traffic's Paper Sun is pretty great. They're just sort of hanging out and looking around at a museum. And singing a little every once in a while.

"Thank you Blood and Sweat. Sorry to hear about Tears." (Anyone get the reference?)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm

Oh he can sing. That's obvious. It was his demeanor, presentation and just general grating Davidness! Can Buddy Rich play the drums? What a question! But..

The things ya loin. I noticed the Lou Rawls album was named for his cover of the song that gave BS&T one of their biggest hits, so I was looking up who wrote it, and not only did I learn that but also who else covered You Made Me So Very Happy. One of the more unexpected names on that list: Bobbie Gentry!

They are HUGE in the foundation of the 'jam band' thing. One of those bands that doesn't poke their heads up into the mainstream too much but has a really big, devoted underground audience. I have a buddy that owns a record store down in DC who went to college with them and was around for their earliest days

I love this! This is the difference between been a young person and a decreped old person. One night when I worked in Hollywood after putting in a 12 hour day, my boss and I got totally ripped on super grass and went to the Roxy to see Wide Spread Panic, even though we had to be back on stage at 6am. It would kill me today. That is if I had a job to go to.

@Jeff - We're lucky to have been around when commercial radio played things like this,

Awesome and heady show Larry. Thanks a bunch!

@Franco - I feel that feeling all the time. Remembering the days where I'd be out all Friday night, go to work Saturday morning, take a disco nap and then head back out for more fun on Saturday night. I think if I tried that these days I'de be dead halfway through

I have no doubt that they got airplay on KPFK's Thursday Lunch show (which aired Friday nights) featuring jam bands.

Amen, Larry. That late-night free-form FM radio was so influential. My constant companion, and one that opened my eyes and ears to so much.

@Jeff - College radio carried on the experimental feel, but in the punk realm. Not much in the way of dreamy/head music.

Yes, absolutely. Never had a college radio station to listen to, but had a local, listener-sponsored indie station much like WFMU.

Low Spark, Barleycorn and Can't Find My Way are absolutely distinct recall prompts for 70s FM listening.
Thanks for the mix of other takes on 'em!
