	10:23pm Funky16Corners: Started earlier than that in the underground discos (especially the gay ones). The above ground sort of pop disco thing started a little later. I've done disco on the show before. Once did a five hour marathon!

	10:25pm Franco Twinkie: Cruising With Ruben And The Jets is one of the greatest records about love ever made. The Mothers cover every possible angle on the subject on that album. Ray Collins was a fantastic singer.
	10:26pm still b/p: Just looking the other day at info on Rock the Boat by Hues Corp. One version released '73 got club play, then the reedit was one of the first widely popular disco hits in '74.
	10:26pm Erica: Yeah my parents were around at that time, not me, so I only know about the popular disco stuff from oldies stations and the internet.
	10:28pm Jeff Ash: This disco cover of Gordon Lightfoot is better than I might have imagined.
	10:28pm Funky16Corners: There's a ton of great music from the disco era that never gets played on the radio. It's by and large just black dance music.
	10:29pm Funky16Corners: @Jeff - Yeah, a hit in the clubs and on the disco charts but nowhere else. It's on the soundtrack to the movie '54'
	10:29pm Erica: It was black dance music until Saturday Night Fever came out.
	10:30pm Erica: Well until the Bee Gees made disco records anyway.
	10:30pm Funky16Corners: There was still plenty of black music on that soundtrack, Tavares, Kool and the Gang, Trammps
	10:31pm Erica: Then came KC & the Sunshine Band (I could go on).

	10:32pm Funky16Corners: They even had some good records. 'Get Down Tonight' (especially the long, Tom Moulton mix) is a big fave of mine. They came out of the southern Florida, TK records scene.
	10:33pm still b/p: Can still sometimes hear the forehead slapper of a mischaracterization that Saturday Night Fever started the craze. It gave it a surge, pushed it further into more corners of America, and made it a genericized theme for TV show plots and yadda yadda....but "started"....get adda heah. Also, gay clubs and white urban trend riders made early disco much more than only black dance music, I'm pretty sure.

	10:35pm Funky16Corners: @SBP - The book I mentioned above is a great look at the early years of the sound. 'Last Night a DJ Saved My ife' also has some good stuff in it.
	10:35pm Erica: Yeah SNF didn't start the disco craze, it popularized it a few years after its existence.

	10:39pm still b/p: As 15 to 17 year olds, my friends and I were sneering at the fad and the music '74-'76, and by '76 the fashion and hair styles sure had made it to suburban Massachusetts.
	10:39pm Funky16Corners: The music that became disco was happening concurrently with glam but almost completely unrelated stylistically. It was happening in gay clubs and loft parties years before it ever broke through into the wider consciousness

	10:44pm still b/p: In college, the guys I roomed with called the discos "bimbo joints" (even though some of went there for the social mixing scene). This wasn't a direct insult to women, but a jeering term -- more of a verb -- for the whole scene and the behavior and dancing. One guy was given a shirt that said in pretty bold type, "I will bimbo no more forever."

	10:57pm coelacanth∅: chresti i think in my older sister's case -and mine, to a small degree, the t rex album "light of love" (reissued as ...zip gun?) helped to ease people from glam toward disco. i still love that album.

	11:00pm coelacanth∅: the motors. weird. i bought their first album in 1978 - considered a new wave album. i never knew they did this kind of thing.

	11:01pm Funky16Corners: The Motors started out in the Pub Rock scene. Bram Tchaikovsky was in the band for a while.

	11:02pm still b/p: If we'll allow more SNF indulgence: There's much of the 70s disco that gives me a smile and kick now. I like SNF as something to idly ponder and examine. When I first saw it, months after its biggest hype, it was better than I expected. Looking at repeatedly over the years it's good for: scenes of an older New York; noting how awful and lame some of the dancing actually is; noting how how clunky and low the production level is, to both better and worse effect. And favorite scenes and lines. Discussing Romeo and Juliet suicides at the coffee shop, Tony thinks Romeo "could have waited." Stephanie: "It's the way they took poison in those days."

	11:05pm coelacanth∅: Tchaikovsky was definitely with them when they did "dancing the night away", which is why i bought a motors album. kind of a new wave-prog meld... but i think their biggest hit was "airport",no?

	11:16pm coelacanth∅: some of my flower child posse came over one day (high school days) unexpectedly and i was playing an Olivia Newton-John song "physical" and 3 of them were shocked. like weeks of shock! the youngest one, Charlene, said it's cool that i'm open to it. no guilty pleasures.

	11:17pm Funky16Corners: I am embarrassed by none of this music. In fact I love it, some of it deeply.
	11:17pm Dean: Olivia Newton-John is Max Born's granddaughter. Brings new meaning to "Let's get physical."
	11:19pm Dean: I enjoy cultivating a love of bands whose music embarrasses me, e.g., Alessi Brothers and Mentors. I like them because they make me squirm.

	11:24pm Erica: Telemann? Isn't that the band with Johnny and Tommy Sanders? Not as good of a band as Tap Tap or Pete & the Pirates.

	11:25pm Dean: Telemann wrote music as if he didn't give one little shit about it. And he wrote tons of it.

	11:26pm still b/p: Expressed my like of Tears for Fears to someone the other day when an oldies station played two of the hits within a few hours as we worked. Have the cassette. Still hope to convince a friend we should do a Mad World duet as a simple-chord curiosity.
	11:26pm Erica: Never mind, wrong artist. Telemann was a German baroque composer. I just looked it up. Teleman (without the last n) is an Indie band.
	11:26pm doctorjazz: I have no problem with Herman's Hermits or other silly pop songs (though Paul's Silly Love Songs is a bit much)

	11:30pm Dean: Tchaikovsky demands serious attention. Telemann doesn't, and that's why I love his music. (I love Tchaikovsky, too, but for different reasons.)

	11:32pm Dean: "Sowing the Seeds of Love" is a pop masterpiece. I suppose I'm also a fan of New Order. The music is ordinary, but the production and sound are pretty terrific.

	11:37pm Dean: Some recordings of the 1812 are snoozefests. The work itself, not so much.
	11:37pm still b/p: In the program notes at the debut performance of Romeo and Juliet , Tchaikovsky said this about what he tried to capture: "It's the way they took poison in those days."
	11:39pm coelacanth∅: Dean, i'll give you that. and conversations like this always make me go listen again. ... i just know that Tchaikovski was the first classical composer i got into, as a child, and when i started discovering other composers he seemed very elementary...which makes sense to me.

	11:43pm Dean: I'd say that's a bit of stereotyping, F16C. I mean, Elgar? Beethoven? Puccini? Penderecki? They all were emotionally demonstrative.

	11:52pm Dean: You could do worse than start with Bach. For instance, listen to a half a dozen or more recordings of Goldberg Variations. That comparison alone can be incredibly instructive and inspirational.
	11:52pm Erica: Now it's Power Pop. Can't wait to hear the Raspberries next haha. The power of Freeform radio.
	11:52pm Funky16Corners: @Doc - Otis Clay's is my favorite. Surpasses the original (IMHO).

	11:53pm still b/p: We had a Chopin bio-album when I was a kid -- dramatizations of life moments and conversations, and presumably music. I only vaguely remember a confrontation scene on the record. I think a godmother gave it to my brother. Interesting choice for a grade school kid. It didn't get the play that The Chipmunks and Paul Bunyan and Disney Pinocchio and Mary Poppins got.

	10:25pm Franco Twinkie: Cruising With Ruben And The Jets is one of the greatest records about love ever made. The Mothers cover every possible angle on the subject on that album. Ray Collins was a fantastic singer.
	10:26pm still b/p: Just looking the other day at info on Rock the Boat by Hues Corp. One version released '73 got club play, then the reedit was one of the first widely popular disco hits in '74.
	10:26pm Erica: Yeah my parents were around at that time, not me, so I only know about the popular disco stuff from oldies stations and the internet.

	10:28pm Funky16Corners: There's a ton of great music from the disco era that never gets played on the radio. It's by and large just black dance music.

	10:32pm Funky16Corners: They even had some good records. 'Get Down Tonight' (especially the long, Tom Moulton mix) is a big fave of mine. They came out of the southern Florida, TK records scene.
	10:33pm still b/p: Can still sometimes hear the forehead slapper of a mischaracterization that Saturday Night Fever started the craze. It gave it a surge, pushed it further into more corners of America, and made it a genericized theme for TV show plots and yadda yadda....but "started"....get adda heah. Also, gay clubs and white urban trend riders made early disco much more than only black dance music, I'm pretty sure.

This wasn't a direct insult to women, but a jeering term -- more of a verb -- for the whole scene and the behavior and dancing. One guy was given a shirt that said in pretty bold type, "I will bimbo no more forever."

	11:02pm still b/p: If we'll allow more SNF indulgence: There's much of the 70s disco that gives me a smile and kick now. I like SNF as something to idly ponder and examine. When I first saw it, months after its biggest hype, it was better than I expected. Looking at repeatedly over the years it's good for: scenes of an older New York; noting how awful and lame some of the dancing actually is; noting how how clunky and low the production level is, to both better and worse effect. And favorite scenes and lines. Discussing Romeo and Juliet suicides at the coffee shop, Tony thinks Romeo "could have waited." Stephanie: "It's the way they took poison in those days."

I think a godmother gave it to my brother. Interesting choice for a grade school kid. It didn't get the play that The Chipmunks and Paul Bunyan and Disney Pinocchio and Mary Poppins got.
