Good evening from Wisconsin, where we're awaiting another winter storm overnight. So we need this heat!

I must admit Testify and F16C really goes well when in the gym, keeps the spirits up.

Hi Folsom. I love your profile pic. Meow.

Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Larry. Love all you do. You got a typo. Fela not Feka.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Matt! I'll fix that!
  10:17pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ve only listened to Fela’s albums so never heard the 45 cut before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Funky16Corners:

Fela 45 edits are weird, considering most of the songs went a full album side.
Avatar 10:20pm
Erica:

Never listened to Fela (until now) so I can't say that I agree or disagree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Funky16Corners:

You'd have to hear his albums to get how the band stretched out over 15 or 20 minutes. It was really unusual and quite hypnotic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Larry! This got me up. Didn't Ginger Bakers Air Force do a cover of Ayiko Bia?
Avatar 10:23pm
still b/p:

What I need is The International Soul and Funk Sound, because nothing else will do when a person couldn't find a useable utility knife to cut the cardboard to put in the recycle bin to make room in the basement to placate the landlord so he'll let me store an inherited kayak down there. Follow? Nothing else will do to shift the late evening back into the satisfaction lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Franco - I don't know, byt considering Ginger's affinity for Afro-funk, I wouldn't be surprised
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP! There will be much cutting tonight!

@FRanco - They did! www.discogs.com...

@SBP worst case you could cut a rug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yup. That's the one I remember from my teens.
  10:29pm
Matt from New Orleans:

This one is questionable Larry. These dudes are from Long Island.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

They worked and recorded in France, but yes, started out as the Bobby Boyd Congress in the USA

There's some boppity bouncing and modest moves and posing in this chair, but the rug itself is safe.
  10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I met a few of the guys in the band through MC Serch who I became friendly with while working at a friend’s parents video store on Long Island in the early 90s.
Avatar 10:37pm
Erica:

Hey doc!
  10:38pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was an ignorant kid but MC Serch used to bring me music and I would hook him up with movies. Haven’t seen him in many many years after he left Long Island.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

I heard Serch call in to Howard Stern last year
  10:44pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I also got to meet Nas while they were recording illmatic so I had no clue who he was until I saw his first video on MTV.
Avatar 10:45pm
still b/p:

I saw a quick reference to Shaft about 5 minutes before this came on.
  10:47pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Thus ends my random tangent on the Lafayette Afro rock band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

I wonder if any of them are still playing in the NY area?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

Soooooooul Train!
Avatar 10:51pm
still b/p:

This Soul Train version is maybe the most enjoyable steel drum number I ever hoid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm always on the look out for LPs from the islands from the 70s. They usually have one or two cool covers on them
  10:54pm
Dean:

I (rather, my parents) have this one from '67 after hearing them live at a local shopping mall: https://www.discogs.com/The-Esso-Trinidad-Steelband-On-Tour/master/943775
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

That was one rockin' shopping center, Dean.
Avatar 10:56pm
Erica:

Apparently Gemini Brass have rocked the boat to the bottom of the sea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I think Van Dyke Parks worked on one of their later records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I believe this in the style of the big carnival street bands of Trinidad

Erica:

It was meant to be a joke Larry.
  11:00pm
Dean:

Franco, I already mentioned to you that I saw a steel drum band--not Esso--at Fashion Square in La Habra long ago. The Esso appearance was elsewhere as I (vaguely) recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Franco Twinkie:

No matter, Dean. It's good shopping music where ever it was.
Avatar 11:04pm
Erica:

Sounds like a remix.
Avatar 11:05pm
Erica:

Like a predecessor to remixes that is.
  11:05pm
Dean:

"Over there, Eric Clapton, ukulele."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Funky16Corners:

This whole album is a series of medleys like this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Franco Twinkie:

And Brainiac on banjo.
  11:06pm
rw:

Fashion Square... Oh, yeah. I had forgotten. I think they were dismantling a Bullocks or something when we moved near there. Is it still called Fashion Square? Sometimes I forget I'm over a half century old.
  11:07pm
rw:

But I'm a quarter century high.
Avatar 11:07pm
Erica:

I'll have to check out Nero's Soul Party to see/hear the other medley's later Larry.
  11:08pm
Dean:

Nope, rw. It's now a true strip mall, with a Ross, Chick-fil-A, Red Robin, Starbucks...you know the drill. No more Bullocks, Buffums, Magnin, and so forth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - It's a cool record, but over the course of the whole thing I ended up wishing for one or two whole songs all the way through
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
chresti:

I thought of Bonzo Dog Band's intro/outro, at the beginning of Soul Medley Number one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, the original outdoor mall is gone, right?
  11:10pm
rw:

FT, it's still there but has no resemblance to the original.
  11:10pm
Dean:

However, it is notable as the first site of Krispy Kreme in California, the opening of which caused major traffic issues and got news attention at the time. That KK is now the CfA.

IIRC, the original mall, Franco, was indoor, turned outdoor. It's still outdoor, but no original retail remains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Franco Twinkie:

I do remember getting 'Skull Fuck' by the Grateful Dead at that Bullocks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
doctorjazz:

Filthy organ, don't know this Le Nilsman
  11:19pm
Dean:

I remember buying a funky psychedelic coaster-shaped gizmo at I. Magnin. You rub your finger on it and the display oozes one way and the other, multi-colored and paisley. I still have it, somewhere.
  11:22pm
Dean:

Rather, Joseph Magnin: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ocarchives/12443362844/in/photostream/

My favorite store at Fashion Square was the Sunset House, where you could actually see, and hold in your hand all the funny crap they would advertise in the back of Home Magazine.
  11:25pm
Dean:

Ever make it Hair Boutique in Whittier? I was in junior high across the street when that joint was jumping. A head shop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Franco Twinkie:

Kind of a jazzed-up mellow rip of Mellow Yellow. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

You can dig the groovy picture sleeve of the Mieko Hirota 45 here: funky16corners.wordpress.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Franco Twinkie:

No, but I do remember been in this record store on Whittier Blvd, and seen this odd record of Curtis Knight(?) and Jimi Hendrix playing in some cheezy lounge. Why I didn't but it, I can't say.
.
  11:34pm
Dean:

Lovell's in La Habra? Music Plus in Whittier? If the latter, I mighta been at the register.
  11:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I had been hoping for some William Onyeabor earlier when you were playing stuff from Africa

Sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

No, if I remember correctly, it was neither. Just a little under stocked joint that probably didn't last long.

Shoot, depending on the year, coulda been Hair Boutique!

Dean:

^Me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Maybe. 1971 or 1972.
  11:43pm
Dean:

That'd fit. I was at the junior high '71-'73, when Hair was operating. Blacklight posters and such on the walls. Paraphernalia. Mighta had LPs.
  11:43pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m surprised pass the hatchet got released in Uruguay. It was fairly obscure in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, how old are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Hang on for the break. I'll tell the story.
  11:46pm
Dean:

Sixty this summer. My kids are young, so I kinda don't feel supernumerary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I'm going to be sixty four this summer. It's doesn't matter now, but a few years made a difference back then.
