Mention of Beatles prompts me to share a bit of comment from someone who was on the roof shooting doc at moment of famous final group performance at time of serious discord (from 50th anniversary story):
“They started playing and John looked over at Paul or Paul looked over at John, and I was just like 4 to 6 feet away and I saw this look on their face…it was like you know what, this is us, it doesn’t matter what’s going down, and al the problems and everything, This is who we are, we’re mates, we’ve been together for so many years, and we are a good rock and roll band and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

doesn't sound so very different from later Hall & Oates ; same with Gene/Barry.

far superior to Elvis' version, this one ~

TDK, My friend Bruce actually went to a party at Snoopy's house in the hills after a show at Bito Lido's. And yes, there were tons of drugs!

@geezerette ~ you mean John & Mary?

Dean:

The crappy thing about the internet is that regional differences in demand for stuff -- say, 45s -- jacks up the price for everybody. That was the business model of a buddy of mine who ran one of the most successful ebay services. Folks in the midwest would pay a ton for records you could find in LA for pennies. I wonder whether Wenzel's Music Town in Downey wouldn't have had that Glen Campbell record for far less than fifty bucks.
  11:32pm
Dean:

Well, one of the crappy things about the internet.

Thanks, Larry! Gotta catch the last set on the replay. Time to go see whether the car starts again. Now 13 below with 37 below wind chill. Stay warm!

Wow, Rod in '66 sounds more like Rod in the '80s than Rod in the '70s.

Was this before Rod Stewart had that raspy voice lol?

I saw Peter Allen open for Warren Zevon at the Roxy in 1978.

Can we blame the Moody Blues for the oh so precious arrangements and productions of these British tunes?

Peter Allen? As in "the boy from Oz"? Well this is something to add to my Australian 60's playlist.

Dean, maybe that precious sound even goes back to the Zombies? Kinks? Donovan? 'Lady Jane' by the Stones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Funky16Corners:

Beatles, Stones, Kinks, countless 45-only bands, Moody Blues, Bee Gees etc etc
  11:46pm
Dean:

Mind you, I really enjoy the Alessi Brothers, whose knack for overproduction and syrup should be legendary. But the Moody Blues, Donovan, some of the Kinks, etc. ... naw. Too treacly for my palate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

No kidding, Larry. And even funnier, was the writer Don Snowden came and sat with me and my friend Mark, and the whole time had this exasperated I've seen it all expression n his face.
