A story I saw earlier this evening about Joni Mitchell's 1970 Isle of Wight appearance and a new doc about it notes "Donovan showed up in a Gypsy-styled caravan with beveled windows."

The Godsin Bros. teamed up with Gene Clark after he left the Byrds for a bunch of songs that were released as Early L.A. Sessions years later. A truly remarkable record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

@SBP - Donovan lived the hippie gypsy life all the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm

There is a picture of Noel Harrison sitting inside a refridgerator reading a book that perfectly sums up his character.

OK, I see, two different sets. (Mrs. Parq and I were having a late dinner and I clearly missed a mike break.) For a moment, I thought that Donovan had written "Very Good Year". Clearly, that would have changed everything.

@DEan - was he with a band or solo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

Hüsker Dü did an excellent version of sunshine superman - second only to the original, in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Funky16Corners:

How have I never heard that?!?
  11:04pm

I *believe* he was solo. Ninety percent certain. Was at the Aladdin Hotel in Vegas, the very last time I've ever been to LV (not counting one layover at the airport).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Parq:

"Sunshine Superman" was one of those Changed My Life records for me. I am confident that I would be at least a somewhat different person today if that record had never existed. And "Epistle to Dippy" was one of those records that separated me from my friends, none of whom got it in the least.

@Franco - I think recently in NYC (or coming up soon)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
coelacanth∅:

yes. up until a few years ago i thought maybe he'd get the recognition he deserves after all; but now it's just too late.
Mick Taylor, same deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - i think Reid was too big a talent to front Zeppelin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Funky16Corners:

It wouldn't have worked or him or for Zeppelin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
coelacanth∅:

Reid turned Page down. i forget why. some prior commitment i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Jimmy Page wanted Terry to eat a shrunken head as a pledge of commitment. And that's where their paths verged off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
coelacanth∅:

i agree Larry. (@11.25) Reid is/was too serious of a musician to front a band geared toward adolescents. not dissing zeppelin, but it is what it is. Plant was kind of a caricature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
doctorjazz:

Checked Wickapedia, they say he was offered the Zep gig but had other commitments and he folks Page he'd do it if he was compensated for the gigs he'd have to cancel (which didn't happen).

  11:30pm
Dean:

"Old school." Sigh. Yes. And yes, Ivy Room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm

yes, speaking of vibrators! they wouldn't put superlungs on an album but they released mellow yellow as a single?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

I know that place, it's by the bowling alley on San Pablo.
Avatar 11:32pm
Erica:

LP Edit? Shouldn't that read LP version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
Funky16Corners:

I think Mellow Yellow benefited from vagueness. Superlungs, not so much
  11:33pm
Dean:

It is, indeed, Franco, a few short blocks south of the bowling alley, right at Solano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica I put it that way because most folks are familiar with the 45 version which is radically different (shorter, restructured)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Chresti's brother hangs out at The Ivy Room.
Avatar 11:34pm
Erica:

That's what I meant Larry. If it's says Edit, it's an edited version, not an album length version.
  11:34pm
Dean:

Opening bands were a trio of young, talented musicians (I missed the first group), utterly devoted to a punk ethos. And then The Vibrators took the stage and demonstrated how punk had nothing to do with devotion to anything.
  11:36pm
Dean:

(Only one was from the original band c. '77, but the others were, uh, of a certain age and duly beer-bellied or en-leathered.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, do you ever go to that place on Gillman?
  11:38pm
Dean:

I've never been to the punk venue, no, but I live about three, four blocks from it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
coelacanth∅:

right.
so, before leaving Donovan behind, i wonder if anyone agrees with me; or would admit to agreeing with me...
i love the "over-produced" version of catch the wind that used to be on the Donovan's greatest hits album; now replaced (a la little wing on Hendrix in the west; or darker than blue on Curtis!)with the trying-to-sound-like-Dylan version, which i think lacks in emotion and is generally weak.
...the orchestrated version seems to be hard to get now. i'm glad i still have the original record.
