okay Thanks friends for input. it happens here much more than it happens at my house. it's probably these people's internet set-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I never got to see the MJQ, but I did get to see Kay and Milt Jackson in separate free concerts at our local library when I was in my teens and twenties. Milt was shocked when I (who looked like a long-haired biker) brought up a 10" MJQ record for his autograph

I know these song are probably about Ireland, but this album always reminds be of the streets around Warner Bros. in Burbank.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

I think the best music always reminds you of where you first loved it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

True that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

Or who you first loved it with...

@Franco, one of my favorite places, that little area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

Me too Geez, I usta work on the Warners lot...A lot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
doctorjazz:

Wow, think I have this album filed, but don't remember the Richard and Linda cover, cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Parq:

This may be connected to Coales's problem, or not, but I keep losing volume. I've turned my player up three times since this show started, and here it is at whisper level again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Funky16Corners:

Still getting consistent readings on this end. I will investigate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Funky16Corners:

Anyone else experiencing volume issues?
Avatar 10:44pm
geezerette:

@Larry,where,when and who. Music is magic.

@Franco, I worked at Disney..Funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Parq:

Franco T, that's how it is with a really evocative piece of work. No matter what the originator had in mind, you're just *sure* it's about your own long-past experiences.
Avatar 10:45pm
Erica:

It's fine on my end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - Indeed it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Parq:

It's probably my own player, then. Carry on.
Avatar 10:46pm

Totally consistent here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Parq, you are a perceptive one indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
doctorjazz:

Richard and Linda (together and separately) up there with my faves of all time, just loving this.
No volume issues using home page player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Funky16Corners:

I think aside from a few Fairport tunes, the Richard/Linda stuff is my favorite of the Thompson catalog.
Avatar 10:50pm
geezerette:

@Larry, I agree. He's depressing to me on his own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, he needs someone to moderate his darkness
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
doctorjazz:

The Richard/Linda stuff is indeed great stuff, but love the solo albums as well (darkness doesn't bother me, kinda like Richard's gloom and doom). Seen him many times in concert, solo and with bands, man, can he play that geetar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

He is - along with Stevie Ray Vaughn - the best guitarist I've ever seen in person
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
doctorjazz:

Ah, Miles, his breakout/cusp electric album as well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Little Danny:

This Miles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Lots of 'cusp'/transition in tonight's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Funky16Corners:

If you can still find it, the Complete In A Silent Way box set is amazing.
  11:07pm
Dean:

Got IASW complete. What I'm looking for is the Plugged Nickel stuff.
Avatar 11:08pm
geezerette:

Smiles for Miles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
doctorjazz:

I second the In A Silent Way Box.
This music just floats...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

The one I have to go back and dig into is the Complete Miles Davis/Gil Evans set. Lots of outtakes that I haven't given proper attention
Avatar 11:12pm

Cicely Tyson is 93 !

A nice peaceful vibe from this jazz set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm

Thanks Erica!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

Teo Macero is really the uncredited band member on these sessions.
Avatar 11:17pm

As beautiful as his ballads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Little Danny:

Killer show thusfar Larry, very hip late '60s FM radio vibes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks Danny! It is that very vibe that I am always chasing.
  11:18pm

Jethro Parsons, Miles Thompson, Van Davis, Mike Dylan, Linda Doo Dah...a roster of celebrity!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
coelacanth:

i Love Love
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Me too, C. This is by any measure my favorite album.
  11:27pm
Dean:

Artists who covered huge swaths of ground: Beethoven, Bach, Telemann. Even Copland ran a gamut. Schoenberg!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - remember the light of the dial on the tuner as it came to life. Sometimes the only light in the room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - Agreed, I was thinking more of artists in the (more) popular realm, but yeah, the set of beethoven's symphonies is quite a journey from end to end
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

One night I ran into Johnny Echols and the only thing I could think of to say to this great man was that his guitar on Forever Changes would haunt me till the day I die.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
doctorjazz:

Ornette Coleman covered quite a bit of ground in his corner of the music world, sort of analagous to Miles in a way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
coelacanth:

that probably was enough,Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Funky16Corners:

I think Ornette is too inscrutable for most people, t least casual listeners, where Miles pokes through into the greater zeitgeist a bunch of times. But yeah, I could listen to the first few Atlantic Coleman albums on a loop for a week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

Ornette Coleman was Johnny Echols next door neighbor when he was a kid.
  11:32pm
Dean:

Indeed, symphonies. I was thinking of piano sonatas and string quartets, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Webhamster Henry:

Got any psych-folk in this set?
Avatar 11:34pm
Erica:

The Left Banke's first LP was the best, as it was catch baroque pop. The 2nd album, however the band took a different direction both vocally and in terms of the genre and it wasn't as good.
Avatar 11:35pm
Erica:

catchy baroque pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Webhamster Henry:

I have a phone message from Teo Macero, but it's not very interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Funky16Corners:

@Henry - Not really, though the next track is psych/folk adjacent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I love the first Left Banke. So many great songs
Avatar 11:36pm
Erica:

I agree Larry. I just wish they didn't change directions for the second album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth∅:

in "contemporary" music, Ray Davies; Brian Eno; maybe Brian Wilson...though i didn't actually hear the mic break so maybe i'm misunderstanding the subject!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'm a kind of Incredible String Band fan, that's all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Franco Twinkie:

Love played with the Yardbirds and Moby Grape at the Santa Monica Civic...can you imagine!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - I think what I was trying to get at was Davis spanning so many movements within his style. I can't think of anyone in rock that went through as many changes that were all that good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - That bill would have blown my mind
Avatar 11:40pm
Erica:

Never heard this Al Stewart song before. I'm used to his 70s soft rock stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Webhamster Henry:

Every psych song contains the words "my mind".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Funky16Corners:

He came up like Cat Stevens, with a little bit of mod/psychedelia before settling into The Year of the Cat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Spirit played with Love at the same place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Funky16Corners:

@Henry - As it should
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
coelacanth∅:

ah - i thought you'd referred to stylistic changes/explorations within the artist's career. (that often worked!)

I had no idea Spirit sounded like this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

This our theme song out west.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Funky16Corners:

Danny - that first Spirit album is one of the best American albums of the late 60s
  11:46pm
Dean:

And of course "Stairway to Heaven."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

are we listing the most undeservedly popular songs of all time now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Funky16Corners:

I think Dean might have been referring to the fact that the opening of Stairway was stolen from Spirit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

Get this Dean, Spirit opened for Zep at the Anaheim convention center, A building that I swear to god looks like a flying saucer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

An English Love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm

oh yes i've read that. despite all the thievery that led zeppelin did (& still does, in royalty terms) the spirit theft is pretty subtle.

LZ were vindicated in court!

I've been to Anaheim Convention Center for at least a couple shows, one ELO with Steve Hillage opening, another with Savoy Brown, still another with...I'm stretching here...ELO with Little Feat opening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
doctorjazz:

It's basically a chord progression, the Beatles used it on Something, goes back to Billie Holiday, not sure that counts as stealing...
Avatar 11:55pm
