I usually can't name a favorite anything -- movie, color, food -- but for a year or two my favorite Aretha selection has been a TV performance of Say A Little Prayer from 10/9/70, not sure what show. Just a damn pleasure. Another clip of same song, same year, from Cliff Richard Show is also pretty good.

Yea it's sad that Aretha passed away. I posted a song by her that she sang with Elton John as a tribute to her called "Through the Storm".

I'm not 100% sure but I think it was recorded in church. I'll have to look.

@Erica - I'm not familiar with that one. I'll look it up

Yo! Franco T!

F16T, all the Aretha tributes I've heard have been incredible. I guess it's tough to go wrong, but still.
And holy cow, that WAS a hard left turn there!

Hey Larry, just curious, ever heard the Original Sinners? They had a single called "You'll Never Know". Very catchy mid-60s garage rock//pop-rock.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

Oh Yeah! This is the Shit! In the sixth grade(1966) Mr. Watkins asked the class what their favorite songs on the radio were. As you can expect lots of Beatles, Hermins Hermits ect. He said:"Franco?" I said Talk,Talk by the Music Machine. I got stares of non -comprehention and suspicion. This reaction would plague me my entire dismal career as a student. More later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

Yeah, I always suspected that Hendrix heard this version,

Franco Twinkie:

A long time ago, my girl friend dumped me and moved up to the Southern Sierras to play in a county&western band. I drove up to see her shortly there after. One day she said "Lets go see my friend Rocky" (The band leader.) When we got to his house, his wife said he was out in the garage with some guy recording. We banged on the door and Rocky came out with his friend. He said "This is Sean Bonniwell." I blurted out: "I use to see you on Boss City!"(A TV dance show in L.A.) He said " You know, I invented punk rock" He was wearing flip-flops with socks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

That's cool. I was in touch with him years ago via a fanzine I was doing. He had become a big Christian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - Who was the host of Boss City? Was it Sam Riddle or was he just on Hollywood A Go Go?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

I know, Rocky said they recorded a bunch of song about Jesus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

Both. Hollywood A Go-Go morphed into Boss City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Funky16Corners:

Ah, OK. I thought I had heard his name associated with both, though I don't think I've ever seen any Boss City clips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Franco Twinkie:

BTW. The Fire Escape turned into The Seeds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

Really? I thought the Seeds were out first.
Avatar 10:58pm

He's probably referring to another band of the same name perhaps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

Larry, is Super K a spin-off of K-tel, it's swell?
  10:59pm
rw:

There must be a comp with a bunch of these songs. Most seem SO familiar to me but I can't figure out from where. Couldn't have been the radio. I must have had a tape at some point. Maybe it was the Nuggets comp.
  11:01pm
chresti:

They are great songs!

You're a madman, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

@rw - There was a great Rhino comp of the Music Machine that came out in the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

Original Sound was the official record label for Cholos and Cholas in jr. high. How they bagged the Music Machine I'll never know. Art Laboe was a funny guy. He put out some early Frank Zappa records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Jeff Ash:

I bought that Liberace record on your recommendation way back when on the Iron Leg blog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - I think Laboe got his start putting on R&B concerts in East LA.
  11:11pm
rw:

Ha! Jeff Ash. And?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - It's worth it for the couple of cool tunes and the Spooner Oldham involvement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yup, At The El Monte Legion Stadium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Funky16Corners:

Didn't Zappa do a tine called 'Memories of El Monte' or something like that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yes. Ray Collins sang the lead vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Jeff Ash:

Larry's recommendations are usually right on. Liberace was all right, RW. Not that I'm ever going to pop for another Liberace record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

Go ride the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Nobody "needs" a Liberace record, but if you have the time, a dollar (or less) and open ears, that's the one to buy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Franco Twinkie:

Sounds like Liberace on piano. but I think it's Nicky Hopkins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

Yes he did! His solution to escaping the the truant officer was to join the air force!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm

The same girl friend that dumped me to hang around with violent crackers in the Sierras...Her parent lived down the street from David Crosby's father. One day we had coffee with him and it was Davy this,Davy that. He was really proud of his son. Floyd Crosby was no slouch, he was the DP on High Noon and my personal favorite, The Man with x-Ray Eyes with Ray Milland.

rw:

My daughter was just talking about the Isley Bros. the other day. She was saying how she likes them but then she heard a song about young girls that creeps her out. I tried explaining that times were different but it's a tough argument to make to a young person these days. Especially my daughter who's kind of a hard-ass.
