It's cool, isn't it?

hey Larry and others

caught the tail of that Emitt Rhodes song - "dear prudence" guitar, beautiful vocals! i have to hear that whole thing soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

Carole King has an official release of her demos from the early 60s (& before?) it's pretty special.

Hey C! TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Funky16Corners:

@C-re Emitt Rhodes, one of the best of the Beatles-reimagineers
Avatar 10:24pm
Erica:

So Part 1 is the 60s Singers and Songwriters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Funky16Corners:

This is the first recorded cover of a Gram Parsons song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Both parts cover the 60s and 70s
Avatar 10:28pm
Erica:

Just wondering Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Funky16Corners:

No problem. That's why I'm here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

so, i've heard of Emitt Rhodes but not sure i've heard his music. was/is he a session guy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Funky16Corners:

Not really. Started with the Palace Guard, then the Merry go Round, then solo. He did a few sessions, but mainly how own stuff
Avatar 10:32pm

The image of Bobby Goldsboro's haircut haunts even someone else's version of that song for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

his own stuff. I'm tired, can't type
Avatar 10:32pm
TDK60:

Yeah at the time (early '70s) Emmit Rhodes seemed like a McCartney-esque melodious songwriter with lots of potential. 2 albums or so then. Then he went into studio production work in the background I think. He was intereviewed by Michael Shelley several years back I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP! I prefer Glen Campbell's version to the Goldsboro hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - He did an interview in the last few years that made him seem unhinged/lost

If I remember correctly, The Palace Guard had a song called Falling Sugar, I think, That was most probably about heroin.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

I knew it! They wore uniforms. But that didn't hide the possibility that they might be familiar with narcotics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

I think it's safe to assume that everyone back then was at the very least 'familiar' with narcotics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

thanks TDK that might actually be where i know him from. i used to listen to Shelley almost religiously back then, and i wouldn't have been on the comment board yet in 2010.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm

Now, Bobby Goldsboro.....Looking quickly at Wiki bits for the hell of it, I see he wrote all the music for the TV show Evening Shade, he caused some controversy with a suggestive song in '73, and had "huge" Northern Soul hits in UK with A & B sides of a '66 release. Who knew?
Avatar 10:51pm
TDK60:

coel: I was only occasionally on the board back in 2000-10. // That Gordon L. one was really good. // Great to hear some of this older folk and folky-rock.
Avatar 10:51pm
Erica:

Really doctor or was that a joke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

@SBP - His "Northern" record is pretty cool. There's a pretty amazing list of weird outliers like that, Paul Anka, Joey Heatherton etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

I found a 45 of Walking My Cat Named Dog at the Amoeba in San Francisco for 50 cents. It was a very happy day for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

Just kidding, really liked the tune, never heard of her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

@TDK60 - His early stuff, when he was being covered more than heard himself is really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Norma is one of my faves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
coelacanth∅:

having never heard of Norma Tanega in my days of buying lots of records, if i'd found a record with a song called "walking my cat named dog" i'd buy it without having to hear it first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

I love her! She was Dusty Springfields girlfriend. There is a great video of her in a cocktail dress plaing a Gibson SG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - Norma's first album is a genuine, rock solid lost/forgotten classic. She was writing really interesting songs but was only known for her novelty
Avatar 10:57pm
TDK60:

Agree Funky 16. I'm not a big Gordon L. fan but agree the earlier stuff is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Franco Twinkie:

I think she teaches ceramics at Scripps collage which is not to far from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

I heard she had gone into the visual arts. Very interesting woman.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm

Yes. I know it's him. KPPC was the WFMU of L.A. From 1968 to 1971. It is the reason, or at least one of them, why I am the way I am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

Hello all! Did someone say beer? Love this song. Hey Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
Funky16Corners:

@C- Thackray is a very, very interesting guy. It's remarkable that he was as successful as he was in the UK, and got heard in the US at all. He was kind of an English take on French chanson. A very acquired taste, but one that I have indeed acquired.

@Geezerette - It would not surprise me of she had. It was a standard of a kind in its day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm

@C - He was probably an influence on Prine. Newbury was was better known as a songwriter than he was as a performer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

My man! Fred Neil. This is the greatest song ever. Jefferson Airplane kills it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

  11:31pm

Ilove that song.

And this Fred Neil recording. Gorgeous.

Used to the Airplane version, think they lean into the flatted notes more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

Ruthann Friedman? Lovely! Not even vaguely familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

maybe it is the airplane's. it's definitely the one i know best, but i'm imagining a more folky version...and not Gram Parsins and not peter paul & mary...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
coelacanth∅:

- doesn't matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Ruthann wrote 'Windy' for the Association, and nly recorded one album and a few 45s on her own.

Larry, he does!
This music is such sweet adolescent meløncholy, from the days before outboard brains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

I saw Ruthann not to long ago at local bookstore. She told a funny story about running around with Neil Young on the Sunset Strip in 1966.
