Jeff Ash:

Season's greetings from Green Bay, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Jeff Ash:

Seeing Darlene Love sing this live a couple of years ago in Milwaukee was tremendous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, what a voice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Parq:

Ass-kicking opener. (Okay, technically, Darlene was the opener, but still.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Parq:

The Darlene is an old favorite but the Mavis/Blind cut is a revelation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, one of my favorite Christmas songs from the gospel tradition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Funky16Corners:

Mavis Staples recordings, 40 years apart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Funky16Corners:

This is various and sundry Turtles, Gram Parsons and Linda Ronstadt (among others)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Parq:

I bought an album almost 15 years ago with the Monkees version of "Christmas is My", and never heard the Turtles Etc. version until this year, and now I've heard it twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Funky16Corners:

It's a great 45. I'll play the other side later in the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
coelacanth∅:

greetings Larry and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
JtotheK:

hi F16C, hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Parq:

Oh man, I just *love* this Honey and the Bees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey C, J!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Funky16Corners:

@Parq, a great Christmas record that's also a great soul record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
JtotheK:

@Jeff Ash -- green bay, huh? are there still record shows there are few times a year - and if so, are they decent for soul 45s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Jeff Ash:

We have two record shows, in the spring and the fall. Not many soul records turn up here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

I was out of the room...is that "merry christmas baby" the Charles Brown song?
Avatar 10:28pm
northguineahills:

2017 has been the worst, and possibly one of the best years of my life. I have optimism personally, and limited optimism worldly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm heading to bed, but I wanted to pop into the comments to wish you happy holidays, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Hey Unk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
JtotheK:

thanks for the info, jeff.

Hey NGH, I feel you. This year has been unrelenting. Hard to stay positive, but stay positive we must
Avatar 10:32pm
northguineahills:

UM, you're back a few time zones, yet, you go to sleep early some nights (and others are out as late as I am).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm one time zone away and I crash anywhere from 9:30 to 11:00...but I start heading that way earlier. I also keep the usic playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Funky16Corners:

If I wasn't on the air I'd be relaxing in bed, too

So McKean and Lander of Credibility Gap became....Lenny and Squiggy. That familiar odd story & journey....people with a presumably sharp satirical sense shift over to the worst lowbrow whitebread kind of entertainment. Yes, I know McKean went on to other smarter material later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Funky16Corners:

I hope Lenny and Squiggy fattened their bank accounts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Uncle Michael:

The Lenny & the Squigtones album had a long life in the cutout bins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

Featuring a young Nigel Tufnel?

Surprisingly G rated for Clarence Carter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

Not if you have a dirty enough mind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
JtotheK:

@NGH, yeah - for some reason "strokin" never took off as a holiday airplay tune...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Jeff Ash:

Amen, brother. "Back Door Santa" is filthy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll be there's a spicy live version out there somewhere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

i have a treacherous 3 holiday 45, recommended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll have to look for that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Jeff Ash:

"Christmas In Hollis" has become a classic over the last 30 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Funky16Corners:

It certainly has. I still remember the video
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

ok, I'm outta here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Funky16Corners:

Nite UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

back door Santa is pretty thinly veiled, even by Clarence's standards.
...my 2 possibly favorite Clarence Carter songs are both rated g. (road of love; I'd rather go blind)

I love Allan Sherman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Funky16Corners:

My 4th Grade teacher Mrs Teller used to play his records for us
Avatar 11:13pm
still b/p:

Last week I watched a clip of him doing a medley of his stuff with Dean Martin and Vic Damone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Funky16Corners:

He was hilarious, especially so if you grew up around Jewish people. You get a lot more of the jokes.
Avatar 11:20pm
still b/p:

In a different version of the path I was talking about earlier, the suits wanted him to go for broader appeal and be less....ethnic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Funky16Corners:

That's a shame. His NY/Jewish flavor was one of the reasons he was so good. His medley of Irish songs turned Jewish is one of the best things he ever did (Switching out HARRIGAN for HOROWITZ)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Jeff Ash:

Satchmo. Yesssssssss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Parq:

Larry, you are KILLING it! What a great mix of my faves (you shoulda seen me drunkenly tagging key words to the Stan Frieberg track) and stuff I don't know. If Mrs. Funky 16 and the kiddums ever head to the inlaws and leave you behind, you are *so* welcome at our house for Christmas. You would fit *right* in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm

I love the way he does this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

Thanks Parq! High praise indeed!

If Thurl Ravenscroft hadn't been available for that iconic rendition of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch, it's fun to imagine a Louis take on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
Funky16Corners:

Louis gets extra credit for saying DONDER and not DONNER!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Parq:

It's worth adding that I *had* one of those Japanese transistor radios. One of the best Christmas presents I've had in my whole sexagenarian life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Funky16Corners:

I wonder if there are other recordings of the Grinch out there that predate the TV special?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Parq:

Oh, Still, I'm going to be up all night imagining that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Funky16Corners:

I was recently regaling my son with tales of my multi-band portable radio that I got as a gift when I was 10 or 11. HUGELY important to my musical development
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm

A JOIK!!
Avatar 11:32pm
northguineahills:

Thanks for this Satchmo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

Larry, there's an extra on the Grinch DVD in which Thurl explains that he showed up to do the job on the "Welcome Christmas" session and then the composer approached him and asked him to try his hand at another song he wrote for the production The rest, as they say, is --- well, you know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm

Thurl is such a part of our childhood, but I'd bet most people never heard his name.

A photo line-up of every transistor radio I owned as a kid would be great. One was the Sunoco gas pump model, which a friend gave me for a birthday (11th?), and he discourteously told me before presenting it, like it was a grudging sacrifice he'd made, "I paid four bucks for it."

@NGH - My Pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

SBP - In our house we have the legend of my Pop's Montgomery Ward model that got left on the dashboard one hot, summer day. The back of teh case melted over the insides, yet it continued to work for years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
coelacanth∅:

Santa somebody apparently put a little transistor radio in each of our stockings when I was maybe 7-8. that was big. I remember doing a lot more walking around with no destination after that, just to walk around with that radio.

In one of Christian Marclay's Xmas parties (where DJ Olive was a guest), I saw Christian scratch up (in a good way) a Fahey Xmas record. It was a good night.

at the pub, about a month ago already, somehow the charlie brown christmas special came on, instead of the usual horribleness. i hadn't seen that in years, and it was a huge thing in our household. others were enjoying it too.
then someone (a friend) who's always sneaking behind the bar to change the station to some sports thing, did that -right at the climax near the end, and people started yelling! fucking funny! I got right up and grabbed the remote to change it back, but nobody knew what station it was on. so we missed the end.
