Avatar 1:06pm Joe B:

hey Dennis, thanks for the update!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

interesting. i wonder if the Cat Stevens song title was somehow inspired by "anglesea"...
Avatar 1:10pm Joe B:

I don't know. but i kept saying Angelsea and they were like, no, it's anglesea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

  1:19pm Mark in Toronto:

Beautiful Gary Lewis & Playboys cover.
Avatar 1:20pm Joe B:

i agree Mark!
Avatar 1:21pm Joe B:

hey Bronwyn, after the set the band and I geeked out about the Beach Boys for about an hour and a half. I probably should have recorded that and added it to the end of the interview segment.
Avatar 1:21pm Joe B:

hey Jack!
Avatar 1:21pm Joe B:

I agree Mr Mike!
  1:22pm Mark in Toronto:

As much as one might appreciate self-penned material, it's always nice to see what someone covers, gives you a better idea of where they are coming from, perhaps what initially inspired them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm coelacanth∅:

i knew i recognised that, but... i thought gary lewis & the playboys only did covers. (?) have i been in error all these years?
Avatar 1:22pm Joe B:

good point mark
Avatar 1:24pm Joe B:

Hi coelacanth, scraps, Renbo, VP, Steveo, J, Ricky, KP, ndbob!
  1:25pm Mark in Toronto:

There was usually always one "hit" on A Gary Lewis album, specially tailored for them. They didn't write it, probably came from Snuff Garrett of Al Kooper. All the rest of the album was covers.
Avatar 1:25pm Joe B:

hey queems, charbird, medson, and Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm coelacanth∅:

okay, i wasn't thinking. i guess i thought that because they didn't pen their own material...but of course they did many of those songs first.

Avatar 1:45pm Lixiviated Life:

More Ramones please. (I'll wait)
Avatar 1:49pm V Priceless:

@ JB: me too! I saw the band when Jack Bruce and Gary Brooker were in it. Weird, but I can't remember who the guitarist was - I wanna say Todd....but might have been Frampton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Stevel:

Always loved "Questioningly". One of my favorite Ramones songs.
Avatar 1:51pm Lixiviated Life:

Hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

Did anyone ever do a Ramones On 45 remix? I'd love to hear one.

Hi Rich! me too Stevel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Rich in Washington:

Rocket To Russia was my first ever Ramones album. I bought it on 8-track out of a closeout bin at some huge department store. It was utterly life-changing for me. It's still my favorite Ramones album.
Avatar 2:00pm Joe B:

welcone, Lixiviated! hey JohnK. thinking of getting it for myself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm coelacanth∅:

Rich @1.51 if you've seen them live that's about the same, no?! 30 songs in 45 minutes with basically no breaks in-between.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Rich in Washington:

only broken up by 1,2,3,4!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha exactly!

thank u jack ohara
the interview w/engineer
ed stasium very interesting
thank u selecter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm coelacanth∅:

my first ramones album was leave home. when i got home my friends came over and i decided to be all "punk" and rip the album open with my teeth - damaging the album cover fairly badly.
as it turns out, that first pressing is a bit of a collectors' item.
oh, well.

Thanks for more TK, Joe.
Avatar 2:28pm geezerette:

Wow, before looking I thought this was Nilsson!
Avatar 2:29pm Carmichael:

Is this close to the original? I have heard a much faster version on the Nilsson tribute album.
Avatar 2:29pm Joe B:

modern folk quartet did the fast version
  2:30pm queems:

second doors cover of the day that is easier to listen to than the doors
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Dominick:

This is better than the doors
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm steveo:

2 for 2 on doors covers today; i wonder which one Scotty M will play (jinx @queems)
Avatar 2:30pm Carmichael:

On the tribute For the Love of Harry, it was done by the Beach Boys.
  2:31pm queems:

@steveo turns out i like the doors when the doors aren't playing
Avatar 2:32pm geezerette:

Shame on me!
Carm, don't know, it's good though. I'm one of millions who just thought of him as a Tiger Beat cover rather than a singer.
Thanks again, Joe B. & WFMU!
Avatar 2:32pm Joe B:

what was the other doors cover?
  2:32pm johnk77:

@queems u might be right
but seeing the doors live
was transformative for iggy
+others
  2:33pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

I could always hear Dean Martin singing "Touch Me"--in fact, I'd rather than the Doors. For me, 2/3 of Doors would be improved with Dino. Jim Morrison's voice was like hippie Dino, but with less soul. My opinion
  2:33pm queems:

@johnk i can respect that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm steveo:

JB: Joe played
The Enoch Light Singers Hello, I Love You (1968)
Avatar 2:34pm northguineahills:

Wow, nice Mark Lanegan, rather different then what I've heard before.
Avatar 2:36pm Joe B:

thanks steveo. yeah NGH, different sounding record but i am getting into this new one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

the doors were revolutionary, musically and culturally; and excellent instrumentalists...it's just that they sucked sometimes!
Avatar 2:36pm Joe B:

i can take morrison but in small doses
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm steve∅:

sure thing; really enjoying this set right here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm coelacanth∅:

i can enjoy both the first doors album and l.a.woman all the way through, except i'd skip the song "l.a.woman".
Avatar 2:40pm geezerette:

Coel,
Joe B,
A little Morrison goes a long way for me too. It's the darkness that drives me batty, but at their best I think of them as almost a jazz band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm steveo:

My main problem with the Doors in the main problem I have with every band I grew up listening too much to, thanks to classic rock radio; I always like the covers though. Fresh twist and all....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm coelacanth∅:

they definitely had some jazz, and blues, influence.
really brilliant musicians; but in my asshole opinion, as well as composing some of the most genius songs of the time, penned lots of trite crap. (almost all of the soft parade album, ie)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm steveo:

for some reason I never get tired of wfmu dj talkover bed music, though :)
