Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

First in, hi all! (check back in a bit to see what today's radio archive is).

good evening, chaps. it's jacaranda time down here and they've been exceptionally good this year www.google.com.au...

Good morning, freeform historians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54am
Uncle Michael:

"Clyde Clifford" 'invented' freeform in *ARKANSAS* in 1966...but no examples from before 1970 have been found, ass far as I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54am
Uncle Michael:

That's beautiful, Aus.
Avatar 7:56am
ausmanx:

yep, it's a very sydney thing, but only lasts a couple of weeks. after this november, i am reminded that if anyone ever wants to visit here, this is the time of year to come!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am
doctorjazz:

Really DOES sound like 1967, getting a contact high...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am

(love the organ...)
Avatar 8:04am
ausmanx:

what does freeform actually mean, though? and oh, i forgot, we're going to the World Cup next year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am
doctorjazz:

I missed the opening, who's the band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08am
listener james from westwood:

Listening to yr airchecks these weeks, the difference from what was on the air is so amazingly stark. I feel like I'm listening to FMU compared to the 2-songs-then-live-ads-then-news rhythm of then-current radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am
doctorjazz:

Clay actually does a show with the feel of that older radio, 2 songs, then talk (doesn't do commercials, obviously, has something between the small sets, but the rhythm of the show is similar, on purpose, I believe).
Avatar 8:11am
ausmanx:

that must be the same organ that pink floyd took on tour in 1968...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am
listener james from westwood:

Clay is absolutely killing it. He's involving the rest of the station in ways I don't know if any of the other worthy contenders, as excellent as they are in their current slots, would have done. It's got that older-radio pace but with that wide freeform playlist and he just creates community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am
listener james from westwood:

I do dig the older airchecks and their pace; it just struck me how folks back then were likely surprised not to hear commercials, etc. on something that clearly wasn't a classical or religious station with those long periods of music or other content.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15am
listener james from westwood:

Was lucky enough to watch Clay in action from the phone room last Marathon and it was so clear he had that spark.
Avatar 8:15am
annie:

the pop-up STILL does not load from the omments page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am
doctorjazz:

Absolutely, the way Clay got the rest of the DJ's to contribute is just brilliant (and they have all come up with really interesting little "reports").

When free-form first hit the NY area (at least the first I heard it), on WABC-FM (which later became WPLJ-FM) at about the same time as this archive, it sounded very similar; minimal comments from a "DJ", hardly even any announcements on the music that was being played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am
listener james from westwood:

If it helps, it seems to be popping up and playing in Chrome on PC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am

I wish I could hang out more before my show...busy shoveling breakfast in my face and then off to the shower...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am

i think it's actually firefox screwing up... and this latest "quantum" fix is horrible...i use a mac, loved safari until it started crapping out constantly..i guess there is no pristine smooth browser experience... sigh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am
doctorjazz:

The show sounds really San Francisco oriented, there's such a commonality of the band's sounds and instrumentation.
Avatar 8:24am
annie:

and FF does not let flash run smoothly at all now... or, argues with it constantly.. ...ok rant over..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am

www.macworld.co.uk...
Avatar 8:41am

safari crashes each time i turn it on, after half an hour or so it stops completely. opera is worthless.. i also think i just have a stange energy with electronics.
is that macworld site helpful for the US?
Avatar 8:42am
annie:

i made a comment on the FF Fb page... see what comes back for comments
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am
doctorjazz:

Those browsers should be good in US as well, but it looks like you've tried most of them (I assume you used Chrome). I mostly use a Windows machine (have an iMac that collects dust most of the time). I've used Dolphin browser on an old iPad, but think that is for ios.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am
Uncle Michael:

I'm a little sad that I only get to share three more audio treats.
Avatar 8:50am
annie:

i really do not like chrome, mostly because my browsing habits should be my own and not constantly tracked.. i also think much of the problems stem from trying to woo smartphone/android devices.. i can deal with it, i just hate the left-in-the-dust feeeling. UM, the months have sped up definitely.. there must be a way you can make it happen.

@Lane How do. Since I had Carpel Tunnel in both hands kneading bread is no fun, hence bread machine. Works well with strong Canadian white flour. Accuracy is important.

Mike, on a semi-related note, I played a 300 seat club in Hutchinson Kansas where the FOH had 24,000 watts of subs.
And the engineer was a moron.

Cooking often allows for adjustment as you go. Baking depends on getting it right before it goes into the oven....a huge difference.

I HATE the sound of delay on pedal steel the way most people do it (single repeat about 300ms). I don't even own a delay box. He thought he would do me the favor of giving me a repeat. As soon as I heard it in the monitors, I stopped playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am

Brian, even then, you can often increase the volume of whatever's been over-salted.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am

Parq, I managed to get the dough/batter right. But they're done on a skillet instead of the oven. If it's as hot as a pancake skillet, they burn before they're done, but too cool and they won't brown. I threw away half of the batch.

They're a Christian Rock/Metal Band (my younger daughter was obsessed with them for a while-I took her to see them a few times...)

Helped my son study for a climate exam in school today. One of the concepts he needs to understand is "density" and its relation to air pressure, temperature, etc. Here's how I illustrated density: Consider all those LPs and CDs in dad's record room, tightly packed in their shelves and racks. What if I got rid of half of them? Would the result be more or less dense? What if I retained all of them, but shelved them in a room twice as large with more shelving? He understood instantly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am
