Hey all, Out is as Out does! Missed last week 8n real time, tied up all day (insert jokes here), got to it in the archives. Man, that was a GREAT tribute to Muhammad!

Hi and sorry for late playlist action!

What's cookin', @Uncle Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am

Bagels and lox and scrambled eggs about to hit the table. Cannellini beans for minestrone simmering.

Making me hungry, UM! Annoying cold, spent most of yesterday in bed, likely same today.

Hello all from London. Delightful set Mr Golick.

That Halverson track was interesting, didn't strike me as being her;there isn't 1 "sound" that's her, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks and welcome and good afternoon, @Bobby Whirlwind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am
Jeff Golick:

@doc: sorry to hear you are under the weather. There was a second guitarist on that MH track, too, which might be part of what you're hearing as "not her."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am
Uncle Michael:

sorry to hear about the cold, doc.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:29am

Pretty harmonics!
I heard that there was another guitar player.. Was Mary on the right? I guess it was just so pretty ; associate her with wilder sounds. (but I haven't heard all that much of her stuff).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:32am

Thanks UM, no big deal. Often it happens when I just really need to catch up on rest, so that's what I'm doing. Good excuse not to do stuff...

Checking in from, I confess, a Starbucks in Orange County, CA, where I can't listen. This particular location, however, is playing a decent list of bop. Good Coltrane yesterday, even.

Went indoor go-cart racing yesterday with my 11YO. All limbs intact.

Good morning. What a beautiful opening set, particularly for us early risers on the Left Coast. Was going to listen without chiming in but the FC/Sandy got to me. Thanks Jeff!
  9:43am
Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Coltrane, Dean, I finally got around to watching that new Chasing Trane doc. I loathed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, it's the whole gang! Greetings, Prof. @Doug Schulkind! @Dean! @Mayuko! And @sberger! So glad you're here.
  9:45am

I don't know it, @Doug, but "I loathed it" is about as effective a blurb as ever.

Haven't seen the Trane doc yet, curious...
Nice to hear some Larry Ochs, big ROVA fan (though he'll tell you his music is very different than the ROVA material).

You almost certainly do, @doctorjazz

Mary Halvorson has been a fairly ubiquitous presence here in Pittsburgh over the past couple of years. She has has several residencies with the Arts/Writers org City of Asylum. I believe she is now on their advisory board. I've seen some thrilling performances.

Peter from DE:

Hi everyone, haven't been here on a Sunday in a while! I saw the Coltrane documentary in the theaters, it is very disappointing. Some home movies, one very colorful Japanese fan. Zero attempt to explain to newbies what Coltrane's contributions were. So it's a weird film that with nothing special for those-in-the-know and not enough context for those wanting-to-know-more.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:56am
doctorjazz:

Saw her at the Vanguard with the Octet, great show. Will be on the lookout for her performances here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am
Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Peter from DE! So glad to see you here. And yes, what you say re that doc jibes with everything else I've heard, and yet...I still want to see it?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:00am
doctorjazz:

My take on these docs is, they rarely do justice to their subjects. If they have enough live performance video, though, I'll tolerate the rest (up to a point, of course).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:00am
Peter from DE:

Chasing Trane will be available on Netflix starting tomorrow -- so it will be easily accessible at little expense.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:02am
Peter from DE:

I did think "I Called Him Morgan" was pretty good. Some performance footage, you heard a lot from people who knew him before he hit New York, obviously there was a lot of material from/about his common-law wife, and there was great stuff with Wayne Shorter narrating his reactions to Francis Wolff photos.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am
Peter from DE:

Oh man, this is great, you've inspired me to dig out my Paul Smoker records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, Morgan was a good one, @Peter. Thanks for the Netflix tip.

And I have listener @doctorjazz to thank for this Smoker/Golia, as he kindly shared this album with me. Thanks, @doc!

Whatsupp, Jeff & jazzists?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am
sberger:

I really didn't think the documentary was as terrible as people are saying, but then again my hopes are never that high for this kind of thing. I think if you go into it without very high expectations, particularly if you are a very big fan, and enjoy it for the film of him playing with Miies, etc., then it is what it is. Most of these things are not for the hardcores but they can still be enjoyable entertainment. IMO.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:10am

I don't think I noticed Lester Bowie's influence on Smoker before.

Savoy in the 60s is like a completely different label from the 50s. Amazing. (Was it a different staff?)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33am

Savoy label, would never connect these sounds with them..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am

I was just thinking that Bill Dixon might've been heavily involved with Savoy at this time...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:37am

You're probably right Jeff -- they did a lot of October Revolution artists. Bill Dixon deserves a book-length biography!

Speaking of labels, it's kind of amusing (?) that this AMM record was originally on Elektra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am
Jeff Golick:

It's probably fair to say that AMM is not ideally experienced via the radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
