Heh. I was listening to the Herbie Hancock track and thinking about how "a lot of the best jazz-rock came from people who worked with Miles. Even Keith Jarret -- he did some good stuff in that line, early on." And there he appeared. Nice call.

Jeff Golick:

The wave form for this tune is not so much a wave as a bright white tube.
  10:26am
Dean:

Oh, right, it was you, @Jeff G. The show was terrific. It was her trio Gato Libre, with Natsuki Tamura on trumpet and Yasuko Kaneko on trombone. In a small flat. With seventeen attendees. Fujii played accordion, often to provide drone, while trumpet and trombone exchanged motifs or extended melodies. Gelb's menu was stunning, too: pumpkin puree with yuzu glazed shiitake and enoki; smoked tofu and snow pea wrapped with Yaba with yuzu karashi on braised lotus root and mizuna salad; yuzu curry with tempe, kabocha, and potato; Yuzu pickled cucumbers; and dessert, homemade waffle bowls with yuzu-ginger ice cream topped with yuzu glazed walnuts. I picked up Fujii's Fukushima recording, featuring a host of big names: Zorn, Malaby, Eskelin...just amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Jeff Golick:

WOW

To state the obvious, the theme was "yuzu." Gato Libre even performed a song by the name.

@Dean: That sounds like the old Monkeyhouse in Brooklyn before it went legit. Artists would cook nice veggie meals then play for an audience (who showed up from word of mouth) in a loft. It was good food and good fun.
  11:03am
Dean:

@ngh: I get the same thing from family. But I also manage to stay out of photo shots a good chunk of the time. Heh, we have a Monkey House here in Berkeley, too. It pretends to be a "secret" venue with a non-descript store-front. Heard Penelope Houston there.

@Dean: the Monkeyhouse in Brooklyn went legit in Williamsburg and found an actual restaurant. I can't complain as I played there a few times (then they curated since they had regular shows on the weekends), but then they got priced out a few years ago and moved to DUMBO, and I never saw the place again.
