Yesterday the local college station played three Neil Young tunes in a row. At the back-announce, the DJ reported that a listener had called concerned that NY had died. Nope. She was responding to something she had read about NY's Bridge School support.

Afternoon, morning, whenever. Jeff and cohorts in cahoots.

Just reading a book about the American architect Louis Kahn. In the Fifties he came to the realisation of seeing things 'from the begining'. Sounds obvious but very rarely happens. You have to be very skilled to be able to step back and strip away previous knowledge to refresh and start again. This can apply to music but rarely does. I am imagining John Coltrane to be an example. Frank Lloyd Wright in architecture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am

  10:36am
Dean:

Two or three years ago I had to attend a meeting at UC San Diego. The conference room took in a view of the coast and Kahn's Salk Institute. Maybe it expressed some nature of beginnings, but it certainly was impressive. It's too bad we aren't more routinely exposed to architectural history, which has much to offer about aesthetics, engineering, project management, social arrangements...the gamut, pretty much.

Was finally disposed yesterday to listen to Havergal Brian's massive first symphony, the second half of which is a tribute to High Gothic cathedrals.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Brian in UK:

Dean, you have been to the Salk. It looks wonderful. Imagine the sun going down there.

Havergill Brian was born in Harrow where I grew up. His music was sponsored by Phil Lesh, I believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
fred:

45%! Whoever did this, thank you
  10:44am
Dean:

Not exactly "to" the Salk, but "by" (as I walked from hotel to meeting) and "above" (from meeting room). That's great to learn about Lesh! I first heard of Brian from Paul Rapaport's review in a late 1990 issue of Fanfare, in which Rapaport wrote, "[T]his recording is one of the most important in the entire history of recorded sound." Er, well, okay. Rapaport admits his view is hardly objective, inasmuch as he had a hand in assuring the recording would emerge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Jeff Golick:

That would be listener Brian in the UK! THANKS SO MUCH, @Brian!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am

Hungry.
  10:54am
Dean:

@ljfw: Slow cooker chili was yesterday's dinner here! Used andouille sausage and one hella hot jalapeno.

@Brian in UK: That LAT article is gold! Goes to show what a treasure the Dead were, or at least Lesh. It's the Marco Polo record I played yesterday. I don't recall seeing a reference to the foundation in the notes. Will check again.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55am
Brian in UK:

Dean, love the idea of Lesh listening to a classical bootleg after all those that have stalked the Dead.
  10:55am
Dean:

The LAT article indicates Brian wrote ~20 symphonies. I think it's closer to 32. The guy lived a long time, and was very prolific.

@Brian in UK: Stew and the shorter days go together so well.

@Dean: A friend of mine around here uses andouille in his; I've not had the pleasure of trying it yet. Mine is turkey chili with three jalapeños, an onion, and black & kidney beans. Will keep me warm after morning frost becomes more rule than exception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
listener james from westwood:

@holland: That @Bodegacats_ account is a blessing.
  11:00am
Dean:

@ljfw: I usually use turkey, but had ground beef in the 'fridge. Onion, celery, orange bell pepper, garlic, kidney beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, apple juice, and the last of a carton of chicken broth. A bit of brewed coffee, too. Sometimes I add an ounce or so of dark chocolate.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:01am

Now if you were talking andouillette, not many peoples choice. Not seen over here in the wild.

Dean only the French or Chinese.
  11:09am
Dean:

I imagine if there were a restaurant in town called Andouillette a not insignificant portion of the population, myself included, would figure it was a cute diminutive reference to New Orleans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am
listener james from westwood:

In my case, big can of unseasoned tomato sauce, 2 cloves garlic, 1 med onion, 1 bottle of beer, the turkey and beans, the peppers, and spices. Different friend of mine will do the chocolate thing in the form of cocoa powder.

Oh, man, @Brian in UK, that'd be nice. Long ago I tried to take in a few High Gothic wonders: Chartres, Reims, Notre Dame. I attended a concert in Paris at Sainte-Chapelle. At one time I was poised to go to architecture school, even admitted at a school, until I realized I am no artist, and that what really interests me is the history. For Gothic cathedrals you could do worse than start with Hans Jantzen's High Gothic.
