Hi James, Carmichael, Doug, Melinda, and Mom! I think I got Tim's voice up to where it should be, but be vigilant, listeners ... vigilant ... lemme know if the music is loud enough now, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm

@Carmichael
I think the volume is OK. We are listening to cassettes, which provide many layers of mud.

Terrific! So thrilled to have Tim here, finally! One of my all-time favorite blogs, and I'm guessing y'all's as well ...

Tim, where did you find this cassette?

I picked this up in Morocco when I was living there in 2000-2001.

I'm holding out hope that I'll finally learn how to pronounce Najat Aâtabou! Welcome welcome welcome to the Drummer Stream, honorable Tim Abdellah Fuson!

I'm just relieved I don't have to pronounce anything for once! :)

I love everything about this track. The alternating solo vocals, the call/response interplay, the scratchy textures of the viola and voices, the complex heavy rhythms...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

The voice is mimicking the viola and vice versa. Same throaty timbre. They are like sisters.
Avatar 7:22pm
Carmichael:

Yeah, music is better, thanks. I got involved in some actual real honest work for a second and couldn't respond. Won't let it happen again.
Avatar 7:23pm
tim abdellah:

@Doug - absoutely!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Gary:

Tim's note to me about this track: "The Fatna Bent el Houcine track is one of the greatest things ever. But it’s 21:40 in duration. Starts off in a slow 40-beat complicated, heavy rhythmic cycle, moves eventually into 19- and 10-beat sections, ending up in an ecstatic 6/8. It would be a shame to fade or edit it. This is Aita Hasbawiya, from the region of Asfi."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Gary:

It is *totally* one of the greatest things ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Doug Schulkind:

You can go until noon (ET) tomorrow, but then you gotta clear the decks for Charlie and Busy Doing Nothing.

p.s. i am here but trying to sort out some computer issues, so thanks for the cool sounds to accompany my attempting to figure out why i'm having audio and video distortion issues. if you hear a loud thumping down there in nyc, it's just me banging my head against the wall while i'm trying to replace myriad device drivers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Gary:

Hyde! Sorry to hear about the computer travails ... :(
Avatar 7:36pm
tim abdellah:

Moulay Ahmed el Hassani - SLINKY is my adjective of choice for his sound!
Avatar 7:39pm
hyde:

heh, well at least the stream plays ok if i'm not doing much else beside poking around in device manager! streaming video is the real problem. though i'm occasionally getting some weird psychedelic lag if i download a new driver. i'll manage, but i may not be chiming in too much. so let's just say it all sounds great right now if i don't turn up here much. ;)
  7:39pm
Dean:

I was gonna chime in with a requisite joke -- "Hey, when you gonna play Brand X's second album?" -- when a buddy of mine also listening raptly reports, "holy shit, this guy rides my bus sometimes!" Tim lives in our 'hood. (We know all about Back to School Night.)

Will it be shared on the blog?
Avatar 7:46pm

This Noujoum el Haouz track has a different guitar sound - Not as slinky as Moulay Ahmed’s sound. I guess the absence of the flange effect.

Tim's site, Moroccan Tape Stash, is HW's equal in it's bottomless, boundless offerings of sonic wonder and generosity. I wonder whether Moroccan copyright law--about which I know precisely nothing--prohibits copying or unauthorized publication even for research. Even if there's a fair use provision similar-ish to US law, wholesale copying of an entire work might risk being an infringement.
