Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from February 26, 2016 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I are back. James, the book's discussion of the Bishop show wasn't extensive, so it's understandable that you don't recall it. What I loved most was his section on the birth and growth of Vegas. A man goes to prison. The first night he hears someone yell out, "58!" and everyone in his cell block bursts out in laughter. The next morning at breakfast he asks another prisoner why everyone laughed when someone yelled "58". The other prisoner said that the same jokes get handed around and end up being assigned numbers. After a few months he had learned a good bit of these jokes and one night yells out "36!", which he knows is a particularly funny joke but is met by dead silence. The next morning he asks one of his fellow prisoners why no one laughed, since it is a particularly funny joke. The prisoner replied, "Some people just don't know how to tell a joke."

Yes Lane, too late!

Welcome late arrivals!

don't play B-17 either while you're at it...

Maybe Lane was requesting the tune by quoting it?
Avatar 2:38pm
annie:

is a nickelodeon the same as a jukebox?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Uncle Michael:

Nope, no matter what Teresa Brewer thinks, it's not!
  2:39pm
Dean:

A rhetorical question, annie? Or one concerning the ontology of musical devices?
Avatar 2:39pm
chromaphone:

It's too bad David Lee Roth said "record machine" instead of "juke box" in the song Jump, otherwise I'm sure we'd be hearing it today.

tips on wolof

great comments today

Really, it's too bad David Lee Roth said a lot of things.

A Nickelodeon played motion pictures.

actually, dean, yes.. a real question.

Great track, this Jackie Edwards.

Perhaps I was requesting the Lloyd/Paycheck version. Country rarely got better than the Little Darlin Paycheck sides....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Lane Gray:

Is this the grovelthon?
Avatar 2:43pm
annie:

cool, i had no idea.. only popular for about 15 years..so the song: "put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon" is misleading
Avatar 2:44pm
chromaphone:

Yea of all the bands I like, Van Halen may have the weakest lyrics in their songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
doctorjazz:

So, we'll expect a jukebox instead of a band for hoof and mouth...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Uncle Michael:

Groveling is a couple weeks away Lane.

I'm going over my time!
  2:46pm

Ramblin' Jack Elliot used to say,"I ain't no jukebox" when people would shout out requests.

@annie: unless someone wanted to spend more time watching more short motion pictures.

creative license i guess

Ahh. You're always welcome to preempt the computer shuffle.
And Paycheck sang about the Meanest Jukebox in Town...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Alex In Illinois:

@annie: I was wrong. You are correct. The lyric is misleading. I had confused Nickelodeon with a Kinescope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Uncle Michael:

I played that too, Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm
Alex In Illinois:

. . . and I did not realize the next line referred to music.

Were it possible, UM, I would send you over a nice hot cup of coffee and a piece of home made pie. Great job on the jukebox tribute (my daughter, as a tot, used to call it "the juice box"), and greater job still on your last minute sit in for Our Leader. Great weekend and great week to you.

I used to work at this shitkicker restaurant and lounge and every Saturday and Sunday morning used to have to muck out the empty lounge before all the drunks came shuffling back in. The juke box was my salvation. The guy that stocked it and collected the coins not only showed me how to make it play for free but also gave me the codes for the dozen or so records that weren't listed on the menu - mostly rock music.
