I was always envious of the Zoom kids, getting to be on a tv show.
  8:14pm
JakeGould:

“Dislocation Dance” sounds very much like “Unrest.”
  8:17pm
Ahmad:

Dislocation Dance sound a lot like quite a few bands active in the UK now. Shopping, Trash Kit, Wetdog, etc. Or should I say those bands sound like them.
  8:20pm
JakeGould:

@melinda: The only kids I ever was envious of on TV were the kids from “Degrassi Junior High.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm

I reeeeeallllly wanted to be on ZOOM. I thought the girl named Zoey was my doppleganger

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
melinda:

@Jake: I loved Degrassi Junior High but I think I was dealing with envy a bit better by then. Living in a metropolis like Toronto did seem pretty cool, though. I was also envious of kids on Sesame Street, in the occasional filmed segments where they went about the city doing stuff on their own, with nice music in the background. Such freedom.
  8:32pm
JakeGould:

@melinda: I was a bit of a kid street rat in the 1970s running around and getting into all kinds of nonsense. It was rougher—and a bit darker—than what Sesame Street showed, but it was fun.

are you talking about nyc Jake? beautiful town at the time. beautiful, tough, diverse, spacious. i ran about on my own as well, growing up. loved it. hardly 'hell on earth' as legend has it now.

Avatar 8:47pm
slugluv1313:

@ Linda Lee and JakeGould -- i am soooooo JEALOUS! i grew up in "the sticks" a/k/a rural/suburban NJ -- as much as i loved stuff like "The Odd Couple" and other NYC based shows i so wanted to experience it for real, instead of just watching it on TV!
  8:48pm
Linda Lee:

i hear you Jake! i started riding the trains a little earlier .. 9 or 10. pretty fantastic, if you think of it .. what we could do as kids .. we were lucky!
  8:51pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: Holy crap yes! I had neighborhood friend… Around the 4th of July we would collect dud fireworks to scrape the gunpowder out of to make homemade M-80s. No helicopter parent would even dream of letting their kid do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
melinda:

@slugluv: my childhood was largely rural and NYC shows fueled my dreams, too. I still get jealous hearing about kids roaming the streets in the 70s! But running free in the pastures was pretty cool, too, in hindsight.
  8:54pm
JakeGould:

@slugluv1313: FWIW, seriously thinking of moving to NJ since NYC nowadays is a bit ridiculous. I’ve had my fill I think.

  8:57pm

frankly, i think it's great to be a kid running free. that's all. .. i left nyc a long time ago. had to.
  8:57pm
Ahmad:

"The Killing Moon" is going to make an appearance eventually. Or is that too obvious?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
melinda:

@Eli: I will think of car exhaust when I go look at the moon tonight.
  8:59pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: FWIW, there are still tons of “free range kids” in NYC nowadays… But they just aren’t in places like Park Slope or other more popular parts of Brooklyn.
Avatar 9:00pm
slugluv1313:

@ melinda -- where i grew up, there was a farm behind my parents' property -- and what we did not grow in our own backyard, we got from this farmer's roadside stand (which was really just a few backyards away) -- 1st time i had a store-bought tomato -- YUCK! like eating cardboard! unfortunately though we really did not have huge pastures near my house, was already getting pretty suburban :(
@ JakeGould -- i was born and raised and will probably DIE in NJ! i am in Hoboken now, SO bizarre, i am one of those surviving few who moved here late 1970s/early 1980s when you could not PAY people to live here! but, there still ARE nice places is NJ -- just kinda gotta search
  9:00pm
Linda Lee:

i remember kids doing that with the fireworks for sure. you weren't the only ones. ..
  9:00pm

sorry for the double. don't know how that happened. damn dial up..

slugluv1313:

PINK MOON!!!!!!! thank you so much Faye!!!
and yes i remember when we all used to go into NYC to buy fireworks on Canal Street1
  9:03pm
Linda Lee:

well sure, there have to be free range kids around .. so many parents working constantly.. or just unavailable. .. o sluglove, i lived near canal st for a few years in the late 70s .. it was mad around july 4. insane. Fie Woiks!
  9:03pm
JakeGould:

@slugluv1313: Now it’s all bootleg bags and watches.

  9:11pm
Linda Lee:

do you remember Dave's Luncheonette? Canal & Broadway? fantastic place .. Mudd Club around the corner ..
Avatar 9:12pm
slugluv1313:

@ Linda Lee -- omg YES! totally remember Dave's! spent many a late-post-club night there :)
  9:13pm
JakeGould:

@LindaLee: I remember Dave’s Luncheonette only from a trip I made with my mom and dad to a garment factory for my mom to get work. Was at an open studio tour recently and was stopped in my tracks when I realized the building I was in most likely was the place I went to as a kid when it was still a factory.

@slugluv1313: Canal Rubber is still there but sadly one of the few left. It’s all turning into SoHo south right now.
  9:14pm
Linda Lee:

my god. well you saw me there too then. i lived across the street! remember the mudd club opening. a lot of fun. great neighborhood. how great that you were there!
  9:14pm
Ahmad:

I've only been to Silent Barn a couple times but they were easily two of my best NYC experiences and the few people who I know that worked/lived there are some of the nicest/most dedicated people I ever met. Donate if you can!
  9:16pm
Linda Lee:

i have seen photo-essays about how "scary" and "dangerous" NYC was in the 1980s too . . . by then i was working in Manhattan (some night jobs too! riding the freakin' subways at 3am etc.!) . . . i dunno, maybe it does look "scary" to people who are used to Times Square being all sanitized and homogenized???
