	12:31pm Mike East: If I put barley in my soup, I usually cook it separately and add it when I serve. It tends to soak up too much and get mushy if you leave it in the soup too long...which is okay for the first time you eat it, but the leftovers get mushy.

	12:34pm Dean: A trio of barely adult women has a huge hit these days, "Bang! Bang!" My 8YO plays it incessantly. I keep forgetting to play a tune of the same name by Iggy.
	12:35pm pacific standard simon: Brown the meat, then cook covered, low and slow, in sweet dark beer (to go with the barley, hey!)
	12:35pm Mike East: also good if you cook the barley with whatever stock you are using instead of water so it gets some of the flavor.
	12:35pm Uncle Michael: Dean, play the Squeeze song and every version of Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), too.
	12:37pm Uncle Michael: I like that. I'll do the beef in beer in a dutch oven. I'll add that to the sweated aromatics, that then get butter and the mushrooms. Beef in last then stock. Barley separately.

	12:43pm kat330: Great thing about thyme (and sage) is it survives our winter in the herb garden. I have fresh thyme all winter long, great for roast fowl, too.
	12:44pm Uncle Michael: We still have some fresh thyme but for some reason it was very mild this year...not very flavorful. Dunno why.

	12:45pm pacific standard simon: Plenty of thyme and onions (or leeks). I would take the beef out when it's tender, skim fat as necessary, and turn the heat up to reduce the cooking liquid, then add some beef or mushroom stock.

	1:29pm pacific standard simon: The other day, my nephew made tuna melts. My wife said, "This is great! Why don't you ever make these for me?" I was stunned -- tuna melts were such a big part of my teenage diet that I never wanted to think about them again. She didn't even know what they were!

	1:35pm Dean: In a pinch, boil a variety of sausages in a tall can of PBR, then slowly saute in olive oil an onion, red pepper, and green pepper. Slap it in a French roll and top with hot mustard. Dinner.

That is how I encounter HDT whenever I don't sleep right through it. Hahaha.

I was 15 and saw A Little Night Music on the Broadway. Her celebrity as the mom years earlier in Mary Poppins was more notable to me at the time than the song, though I did like the show.

Used to be distributed on the NPR satellite but I think he just posts it on that ftp site, probably saving a fortune. It used to originate from Chicago's WBEZ both Saturdays and Sundays but that station gutted most music years ago. And I think Cushing moved to Michigan last year. Still a great show decades later. And so much easier to hear on the Internet and ftp.

	12:31pm Mike East: If I put barley in my soup, I usually cook it separately and add it when I serve. It tends to soak up too much and get mushy if you leave it in the soup too long...which is okay for the first time you eat it, but the leftovers get mushy.

	12:34pm Dean: A trio of barely adult women has a huge hit these days, "Bang! Bang!" My 8YO plays it incessantly. I keep forgetting to play a tune of the same name by Iggy.
	12:35pm pacific standard simon: Brown the meat, then cook covered, low and slow, in sweet dark beer (to go with the barley, hey!)
	12:35pm Mike East: also good if you cook the barley with whatever stock you are using instead of water so it gets some of the flavor.

Speaking of Shearer, he loathed Click and Clack. Any noise from him on Tom's passing?

	2:38pm Pedro G.: still b/p: Saw Jerry in DY at the Kennedy Center in 1996. He was spot-on for that role and played it to the hilt. It's that kind of show and the audience knew what they were in for. (Plus I wrote him a fan letter saying how good he was and he called me to thank me.)

	3:02pm Pedro G.: Alex in Illinois: Blues Before Sunrise is on a bunch of stations across the U.S. and maybe into Canada. Used to be distributed on the NPR satellite but I think he just posts it on that ftp site, probably saving a fortune. It used to originate from Chicago's WBEZ both Saturdays and Sundays but that station gutted most music years ago. And I think Cushing moved to Michigan last year. Still a great show decades later. And so much easier to hear on the Internet and ftp.
