Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from November 14, 2014 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I used to brew Ginger beer. The recipe said it was non-alcoholic. I guess it starts out that way, but after 10 days in a sealed container in the dark that yeast does SOMETHING with the sugar, and it seemed to be stronger than normal beer.

I got inspired last week and made beef stew w/ barley on Sunday. Also, watched "World On a Wire" which features Uncle Michael's closing bed music pretty prominently. It was a Hinky Dinky week.

Mike East: The Cooking Light issue that just arrived is themed around slow cookers w/ a pic of beef stew on the cover. Just in time for the frosty weather rolling in. Will have to see if the recipe includes barley.

Riken Vitamin seems to be wholesale-only. Best bet might be to find a specifically Asian market and shop carefully. I got my dashi at a Vietnamese market in San Francisco, which I miss very much (the market, not the city).

Recall 2 earthquakes. First in the 80s, in NJ, centered on the Ramapo fault north of me. Woke up b/c it knocked some crap off my desk. Bed was shaking, but it was a Saturday during my high school years, so I said, "Must be an earthquake" and went back to sleep. 2nd was also here in NJ, but it was that one centered down in, what, Virginia, a few years back. Felt like someone was rocking my chair from behind with enough insistence to wake me up if I were napping.

Outside of the VA earthquake, the only other ones I've been in was in Japan, where 6.1 was the strongest. It cracked a few large thin paned windows in our school and knocked over a few shelves. We got to cower under our desks, it was fun! (we were a good 70 km from the epicenter)

3. Yasiel Puig
2. Bryce Harper
