@ottovonbqe - My vacuum cleaner was my weapon against fruit flies this summer. It worked pretty well.

That's what we do, come tomato-canning time. Shallow jars of vinegar covered with finely perforated stretch wrap.

Fruit flies: either a funnel (make a small hole in the cap, use caulk or hot glue to keep it in place), or _make_ a funicular fistula by (carefully!) heating-up a small patch near the top of a plastic container, then pushing a slim (take-out) chopstick into the container. A mixture of water, yeast, and sugar in the container seems to work best. Change the liquid every few days (at most) to avoid incredible foulness.
