Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from July 18, 2014 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Favoriting July 18, 2014: SPECIAL (Loss Leaders): Warner Brothers' loss is our gain.

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

The Warner Brothers Loss Leaders, 1969-1980

Beginning in 1969, Warner Brothers began selling samplers of music by artists on Warner Brothers, Reprise and other, associated labels. These samplers were comprised of a diverse array of artists and styles and were generally presented as double albums which sold for $2. They advertised on the inner sleeves of normal catalog product, in magazine ads, in promotional flyers and at point of sale displays. If you're of a certain age, these come-ons were ubiquitous.

Labels represented:
Bearsville, Berserkley, Bizarre-Reprise, Brother-Reprise, Capricorn, Casablanca, Chrysalis, Curtom, Dark Horse, DiscReet, Island, Little David, Loma Records, MGM, Palladium-Reprise, Paradise, Pentagram, Reprise, Sire, Straight-Reprise, Viva, Warner Brothers, Warner Brothers-Raccoon, Warner Brothers-Spector, Warner Brothers-Virgin, Warner-Curb, Warner-Reprise, Warner-RFC, Warner-Tattoo, Whitfield
Special thanks to:
Barry Hansen, Todd Everett, Charlie Haas, Ed Ward, Chaz Hill,
Pete Johnson, Bob Merlis, George Kovacik and Denny Angelle

@holland oats: Actually, yes. First half was a college-level textbook for how to write research reports. Second half was a series of primary sources—articles, chapters, web posts—reprinted in the book to demonstrate various writing lessons. These were more of a skim than an edit, b/c they were scanned/keyboarded from scratch, mostly, so semi-recreational. What took the most time was adding coding to all files (>100 Word docs) for the compositor—open and close XML tags nearly all thru. Took at least a third of the time.

I know I have heard or read at least one interview where an artist credited Allen Toussaint as a mentor in some capacity. Could any of these artists whom you have been mentioning Toussaint about be other Toussaint protégés?

I forgot I wrote this -- instead of adding a zillion individual comments over the course of the 3-4 days it took me to listen to the whole show I wrote all my comments in a draft email so I wouldn't lose them if I closed the playlist window. Then I forgot I wrote the email... As the saying goes, sorry so long, I didn't have time to make it shorter.

-----------------------------------------------

Two Cowboys on one LP? They had balls. The Neon Philharmonic one was pretty crazy! Huge production.

Nice to hear the backstory on Dr. Demento, I still have a box of cassettes I taped in the 80's of Dr. Demento by putting my shoebox recorder in front of a clock-radio. Nice to actually hear his (very young) voice at one point on the LLs.

Bologna colored vinyl. [ Pregnant pause ] Bologna colored vinyl... Shouldn't Montrose be on the bologna colored one? I think your playlist background is close to bologna colored...

70's albums could put on the slickest production without getting flashy. The arrangements use horns and strings like it ain't no thang. A dozen people on a track wasn't uncommon back then. And the super-dry sound-sucker LA sound is all over these early 70's records like the Motown or Stax sound defines those collections.

1978 seems to be the inflection point where the refined professional sonic approach was jettisoned and the DIY sound took over. It's almost as if it became uncouth to have blues roots. By 1980 every track has a synthesizer pad on it and punk was already boring and The Buggles had successfully fused the slick 70's production with the synthesizer sound.

I was never punk, a little new-wave, but mostly prog. I was a big Duran Duran fan, which is as new-wave as I got. Well, Japan... Were they New Wave or Art Pop? DD are usually written off as a teeny-bopper band, but they wrote all their own songs and played their own instruments and there are some very interesting things happening on those records, and of course, the stuff they did with Nile Rodgers deserved to be the huge hit it was.

I was pre-teen for Rock Lobster, and when I got older the B-52's never really grew on me. I was never sure if the band or their fans were being ironic or not.

I'd be interested in better understanding how the band's contracts preventing/allowed licensing for non-for-profit distribution of copyrighted music also being sold (by the selfsame company!). The promotional catalog numbers no doubt played a (legal) role in depriving artists of revenue. Zappa really truly believed Loss Leaders work, his business model needed large amounts of exposure because the expected audience was small. He was very sophisticated with the business and he would have stopped if it weren't helping.

This was a great show, a nice (albeit oddly skewed) historical perspective. Fun for music geeks, the original audience has long since moved on. I like the idea there are both business and musical reasons to explain the LL series, probably a very complicated interplay.

It just occurred to me you don't do station ID's! How am I supposed to tell time?

"Reporting on each other's research". You mean plagiarism?

I like that you plan what to play based on knowing how much your show can run over.

Thanks for the LL show -- have a fun week!

I'm humbled that you took the time to compose your response, as you did. May astute observations and it's nice to hear other people's perspective on the times and the tunes. Thanks, Droll.
