Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from August 1, 2014 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

"Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it. When we enquire into any subject, the first thing we have to do is to know what books have treated of it. This leads us to look at catalogues, and at the backs of books in libraries. Or you could Google it."

A fave making-shit-up story:
In the NYC area of the late 80s, you used to see car air fresheners shaped like crowns. Someone got curious about these things and asked what they were. A friend of mine told her that Puerto Rico used to be a monarchy, and that these crowns were how local folks from the island showed their support for its restoration. He doubled down by adding that the different-colored crowns represented supporters of different factions trying to regain the throne.

Just read 'One Leg Too Few' by William Cook a biography of Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. Funny & sad by turns. How were they seen in the US?

Dudley Moore: mainly as that guy ogling Bo Derek in 10.
Peter Cook: not seen, in the main.

Having worked for BBC Audiobooks America, and tried to sell CDs that collected old Goon Show eps, I can say with some confidence that when Americans think of British comedy, they think of Monty Python and Benny Hill full stop.

I'd also add Mr. Bean. Not my cup of tea at all, but a lot of Americans like that movie.

I liked Alexei Sayle back in the day. And Daniel Kitson was really funny opening for Eugene Mirman recently.

But tis true that the Goons were more a cult thing over here.

Dudley Moore seemd to be a sweetheart. his last years were tough - had to sell his successful restaurant for medical bills. A couple who were fans of his made sure he was taken care of and got to hear music, even though he couldn't play it anymore.
