A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

...reading in Scott MCloud's 'Understanding Comics' - he posits that in Japanese Comics - the presonal is 'cartoonish' & abstract - & the impersonal is shown in realistic detail; the paradox that the Abstract - by being personal & internal - is more Universal - because we all - as individuals - have a subjective interior...

@RevRab: The more familiar one is with the Japanese approach to the personal and the impersonal in all aspects of life, the deeper McCloud's comments resonate. I'll have to check out that book

The key is the absolutely strict distinction between the personal/interior and the impersonal exterior which is emphatically enforced in every dimension of their culture, if that makes sense

Yanai has an obvious and deep influence from Wayne Thiebaud and those that followed his style since the 1950's. It was an image of a Thiebaud that my sister showed me from her college art course when I was about 10 years old that changed my life. I remember thinking," If I was a painter I would paint like that!" I am an artist and have met W. Thiebaud.

I don't read the NYT regularly, but am I correct that sometimes it is way less snobby than it once was, and other times it backslides considerably? In the 90s it seemed far more arrogant and Upper East Side-y to me, but maybe just because I was totally new to it then?

- just scanning that NYT write-up (...this *is* the Internet...after all...) - seems writer is trying to come to terms w/ Lonnie - his biography & his oeuvre - & that is admittedly a considerable task; he seems to have real regard for it; it's regrettable if a widely-distributed & relied-upon media source doesn't do the work of researching ahead of time ! - but I could read the whole thang 1st if I wanted to practice what I preach...'suppose...
