A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I prefer original CD releases anyway, not those remastered re-re-releases with extra bonus tracks in a box with a DVD and a finger thick booklet. the first CD release of an old album in most cases sounds the best, so I rather go scavenger hunting for used copies of those 80s CD releases.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - maybe it's that in the beginning they hadn't quite got the hang of what digital mastering was about
...& that they rush-released stuff to cash in on the market of people switching over to CDs

- but ReMastering is not always an improvement as far as some's tastes run...
Avatar 10:02am
the glowing one:

nah, they just wanted their music to be louder than the next one. it's like the old "who's got the longer love stick". but just like in biology there's a physical limitation after which things get nasty and ugly.

and with "they" I mean the artists. often people blame the producers hauled in by the record companies and the mastering engineers, as if the artists are victims of the loudness war.

anyway, I'm not *that* sensible to brickwalled crackling sound.. I just take the older mastering if I can and if there is one by default. not putting too much thought into which release might be the absolute best sounding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am
Trouble:

ha ha jennique!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am
Andrew Waterloo:

@the glowing one, loudness is a 90s problem. In the 80s there were a lot of CD releases that were straight transfers from vinyl that where simply anemic and muddy. There were releases where digital remastering amounted to a significant improvement.

- you *can* tell the Decade something was Mastered in that way!...

...corresponds to the ongoing discussions about Live Volume @ venues - which I tend to see as Post-Rave & Post-HipHop - lotsa massive Bass
- & also P.A. & speaker technology changing...

...I think the 2009 Beatles Remasters are an example of the right amount & the right kind of attention given a Remaster (White Album notably emerges from flat sonic murk, I think)
- even though it noticeably changed the sound of stuff definitively 'Classic'
...& I also wonder why not go all the way & do 20-bit Mastering - &tc. ...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Dominick:

Many 80's CD reissues were done from cutting master tapes. These tapes were made to compensate for the limitations of vinyl releases and to assure all cuts (many are made) of the record had the same processing. Usually some bass roll off, elliptical filter (look it up) an upper mid boost and some compression were done. Later reissues went back to the original master mix tapes. Unfortunately the sound of the cutting master is the sound people recall and when hearing the original mix they think the re-mastering engineer has tampered with the sound. It's also 20 years later and many original mix tapes have deteriorated to the point that they are no longer usable.
Avatar 10:17am
ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@Cecile - I actually lived in Sleepy Hollow for a few years, so I am curious to watch it. Something tells me none of it is actually shot there. And yeah, that Icabod Crane is a looker.

The only new show I'm waiting for is British Sherlock Holmes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- love HuskerDu & BobM. - & been a kick of that stuff lately
- & I think *maybe* (??) they aren't getting Remastered as they should because of the members' disagreements & - Big Legal Mess...

- The Beatles Remasters were pretty thorough, yeah - w/ 2009 technology, @ what point is a Remaster a Remix - ? There was much press about it - should they leave Lennon popping a 'P' or 'autotune it' (so to speak) out? Like restoring a painting (no, really!) - what to remove or paint in...I think they did a great job that should be an example of Proprietary Mastering
