Night Lunch | Yeah Good, Yourself? | Measure Twice, Cut Once | Night Lunch | 2024 | NIGHT LUNCH ARE BACK! Night Lunch features Liam Dorf on the Doom Dooms Liam Hoffman on the Boom Booms Bringing a degastation of salty tones in Dunedin, New Zealand. t's been a long time nursin' these hot and heavy tracks cuttin' steel all day in the hotshop makes the boys go crazy its a scrap-metal record galvanised post-tonal rock music. "Our songs range from doomy “riffs” and “breakdowns” to dancy pop beats all within a crusty, noisy ouvre we have developed. The vocals are yelly, venting about work, rubbish, industrialism and the mythos around it. The content usually comes out of things we live, observe or joke about, all rolled into one big cathartic and electrified sound! We try to be as big as possible with just the two of us." | * | 0:02:23 (Pop-up) |
THE WAEVE | Broken Boys | Broken Boys Single | Transgressive Records | 2024 | The Waeve are back and if even possible...even BETTER. I cannot wait for this new record. The WAEVE’s latest has a drowning, distorted garage rock riff and some hiss-clank early-industrial action in the rhythm section. Give Graham Coxon credit for making music this purposeful when he’s so deep into his career...dare we say it's the best of anything his compatriots are currently releasing...The WAEVE’s James Ford-produced sophomore album City Lights drops next month. | * | 0:05:28 (Pop-up) |
WHITEY | When Did I Lay Down and Die? | Mental Radio | Nolabel/Amplify | 2024 | Whitey is prolific as ever...with a new deal perhaps in the can and "gasp" hinting at touring. Forever salty, forever grumpy...but yet sometimes hopeful...Whitey is the music we need for troubled times. This is a straight ahead rocker/complainer. Despite his glum pronouncements....Whitey still has lotsa fight left in him and we are lucky for that...Pulling in influences from across decades of sound and putting it through the Whitey blender to create something musically fresh, MENTAL RADIO is an album that in turn is furious, raw, amused, politically razor sharp and poignant… a satirical take on 21st Century life, a musical pop art collage....the album drops on Oct 3rd. | * | 0:08:41 (Pop-up) |
Twin Noir | Schräg | Schräg Single | Twin Noir Records | 2024 | TWIN NOIR is a Punk / New Wave duo from Berlin, driven by a tape machine. The Dreams | Sick Palm Dub | Morbido | Replica Nova | 2022 | The Dreams hail from Strasbourg, France. Their recipe is not available in any good cooking manual, so know how to appreciate the exclusivity: a guitar that shears and idle voices on accelerated dubs à la Trojan . The result evokes Sonic Youth, Suicide, The Slits, or an old Cure that would have been born in Jamaica, but the sound of The Dreams is above all a very particular thing, wobbly punk, twisted blues, warm and icy at the same time. Their "unhealthy disco" evokes a beautiful sunset in the suburbs of Chernobyl, a snowstorm in Kingston, or a trip under mdma during the polar night. Some even dare to cite the atmosphere of Ptosis or Malaria!, they are not wrong. | 0:15:06 (Pop-up)
Reymour | Sleepy Time | Sleepy Time Single | Kneckelhuis | 2024 | Brand New Reymour! It's like I conjured it last week. Growing up in a small town in Switzerland, Lou Savary and Luc Bersier naturally bumped into each other and decided to make music together six years ago, with no specific goal in mind. They released a first cassette, Enigme, on Berlin-based label Kinship in 2018, followed by their debut album Leviosa on Amsterdam’s Knekelhuis in 2021. Their new album 'NoLand' will be released in 2024. | * | 0:17:36 (Pop-up) |

Diodes | Tired of Waking Up Tired | Tired Of Waking Up Tired - The Best Of The Diodes | Epic | 1978 / 1998 | The Diodes are a Canadian punk rock band formed in 1976 in Toronto. They released five albums: Diodes (1977), Released (1979), Action-Reaction (1980), Survivors (1982), and Time/Damage Live 1978 (2010). They were one of the first Canadian bands to embrace this style of music and helped to foster the original core Punk scene in Toronto. //// The Diodes formed in October 1976 at OCAD University after a chance meeting between members. They played their first gig supporting Talking Heads in January 1977. The band, along with their manager Ralph Alfonso, went on to open Canada's first punk nightclub, the Crash 'n Burn, in June 1977. Many of the city's founding punk bands played in this iconic venue. The first groups to play the club were The Nerves, on a bill with The Diodes. Other international bands performing at the Crash 'n Burn included The Dead Boys. The club, which was housed in The Diodes' basement rehearsal space, was closed at the end of the summer of 1977, due to complaints by the Liberal Party of Ontario (the principal tenants of the building). The Crash 'n Burn was the subject of a movie by experimental filmmaker Ross McLaren, Crash 'n' Burn. Footage of the club also exists in the CBC Television archives because it was the subject of a TV special in 1977. //// The band put out their first record in summer 1977, a single featuring Bruce Eves and Amerigo Maras of the Centre for Experimental Art and Communication (CEAC), an avant garde, performance art collective and gallery. Mickey Skin of the all-girl punk band The Curse spews profanities on one side, The Diodes provide musical backing with Paul Robinson counting down the spoken intervals, on the other. It was released on the Crash 'n' Burn label. One side was called "Raw", the other "War". It is considered one of the first punk records to come out of Canada. The single was actually part of an issue of the CEAC Newsletter (published by CEAC, the owners of the building that housed the Crash 'n' Burn club). //// The Diodes played CBGBs in New York in July 1977 supporting The Cramps as part of a Toronto punk bill featuring The Viletones, Teenage Head, The Curse, The B Girls and The Dents. They signed to Columbia Records in Canada shortly afterward in August 1977, releasing their self-titled debut album The Diodes in October 1977. The release was produced by Bob Gallo and was accompanied by a single with two tracks from the LP. The A-side of the single featured a punk-rock deconstruction of the Cyrkle's sixties hit "Red Rubber Ball". The LP also included a cover of the Max Frost & The Troopers' "Shape of Things to Come" done in a similar style, along with eight original tunes written by the band. It was domestically released in Europe and Australia, however it was overlooked in the US and UK, where it was import only. //// The Diodes were featured in the January 9, 1978 issue of Maclean's, on the cover and included in the article "The Class of '78: Introducing the New Elite". They were touted as the Canadians "we'll soon be talking about". Others included in this elite group included Wayne Gretzky and Conrad Black. On January 20, 1978 they opened for the Ramones and Runaways at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago to an encore. The band also toured the U.S. east coast during the blizzard of 1978; performing in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore." | 0:32:17 (Pop-up)
Bobby Gillespie | Sickness Of The City | 5 Hectares | Young Tiki / XTRM LTD. | 2024 | ""In the summer of 2021 I was introduced to the French filmaker Émilie Deleuze in Paris. She asked me if I would create a soundtrack for a film she intended to make titled Cinq Hectares. When I asked Emilie what the story of the film was about she replied "It's a comedy and road movie , about a guy driving a tractor across France". I love road movies and I had never composed a movie soundtrack before so I immediately said "yes". I recorded the soundtrack in the summer of 2022 in east London with the help of producers James Rand & Thomas Gorton of @godcolony and a bunch of great young musicians they introduced me to, one of which @alwhite who now plays saxophone with Primal Scream. Émilie's film is an absolute cracker and I'm very proud of the soundtrack. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it” -- Bobby Gillespie, June 2024" | * | 0:35:07 (Pop-up) |
Primal Scream | Deep Dark Waters | Come Ahead | BMG Rights | 2024 | The newest offering from the upcoming "Scream Team" album, to be released Nov 8, 2024. From 'Louder' / By Paul Brannigan published 30 August 2024 ------ "“Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.” Primal Scream offer a cautionary warning about our troubled world with Deep Dark Waters" //// "Primal Scream explore colonialism, xenophobia, fanaticism, human rights and political violence on new single Deep Dark Waters" //// Primal Scream have released a second single from their forthcoming 12th album, Come Ahead. //// Deep Dark Waters is a cautionary tale exploring colonialism, hardening attitudes towards refugees from war-torn lands, xenophobia, fanaticism, intolerance and political violence, which the band say is holding up a mirror to "the dark undercurrent of our times'. //// One verse of the song runs: "Our fortress continent / Our values torn and bent / We bomb and when they run / We tell them they can’t come" In a statement about the song, vocalist Bobby Gillespie says, “Deep Dark Waters is influenced by the writings of Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi. It contains a warning from history. ‘Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it’.”Come Ahead, the follow-up to the band's 2016 album Chaosmosis, will be released on November 8 via BMG. It was recorded in Belfast, London and Los Angeles with Belfast-born producer David Holmes. The album's first single, Love Insurrection, was released last month. //// “If there was an overall theme to Come Ahead it might be one of conflict, whether inner or outer,” Gillespie says of the record. “There is a message of hope in the record but it’s tempered with an acceptance of the worst side of human nature.” //// “There is also a thread of compassion running through the album. The title is a Glaswegian term. If someone threatens to fight you, you say, ‘Come ahead!’ It’s redolent of the indomitable spirit of the Glaswegian, and the album itself shares that aggressive attitude and confidence.” | * | 0:37:41 (Pop-up) |
The Jesus And Mary Chain | Pop Seeds | Pop Seeds (Single) | Fuzz Club | 2024 | Released yesterday, September 4, 2024. "Over four decades ago, brothers Jim and William Reid were briefly in a band called the Poppy Seeds. Now, you know them as the Jesus And Mary Chain, and they’re nodding to their super-early days with a new single today called “Pop Seeds.” //// The Reids conceived of “Pop Seeds” during the sessions for their March 2024 album Glasgow Eyes. While that album leaned a bit darker in tone, “Pop Seeds” is cheerful, psychedelic jangle-pop, billed as a “nostalgic evocation of the shared psychic landscape which led to the formation of the Jesus and Mary Chain, and which Jim and William depict in their new memoir Never Understood.”" //// "Earlier this year, The Jesus and Mary Chain made a high impact return with the critically adored ‘Glasgow Eyes’. Released via Fuzz Club, it debuted at #7 on the UK Official Album Chart and also shot straight to #1 on both the Independent and Scottish Albums Charts. Now the Reid brothers release a new song that was captured during the album sessions in the shape of ‘Pop Seeds’. //// Named in reference to the original band name they briefly shared over forty years ago, ‘Pop Seeds’ is a nostalgic evocation of the shared psychic landscape which led to the formation of The Jesus and Mary Chain, and which Jim and William depict in their new memoir ‘Never Understood’. Capturing a very different ambience to the darker, often electronica-tinged vibe of the ‘Glasgow Eyes’ set, the breezy psychedelia of ‘Pop Seeds’ captures the optimism of two young men on the cusp of a future full of possibilities." https://thejesusandmarychain.bandcamp.com/track/pop-seeds | * | 0:42:29 (Pop-up) |
Energy Slime | High Society | Planet Perfect | We Are Time | 2024 | "When so much in the world is broken and upsetting, why not make a sparkling DIY pop album with your spouse? That’s the resigned yet euphoric spirit of Planet Perfect, the debut album from Vancouver duo Energy Slime (Jay Arner and Jessica Delisle). //// Recorded amidst personal loss and worldwide lockdowns, the couple sought comfort in the place they’ve always found it: music. On Planet Perfect, they build a glittering universe across 10 tracks of skewed art pop and proggy electro-funk, finding refuge in a landscape of analogue synthesizers and harmonized hooks. //// The album's catchiest, most upbeat moments are laden with subliminal melancholy — but even at its darkest, sunshine still peeks out from between the clouds. The playful piano of "Negative Attention" underpins reflections on past trauma, while new wave title track “Planet Perfect” imagines a post-apocalyptic utopia, its glassy vocoder stripping the humanity away from a world that, let's face it, is probably better off without us. “Into the void, moan and moan” goes the sighing opener “Throw Me a Bone,” a self-eviscerating account of social discomfort that’s sweetened by phasing clavinet. //// Jay and Jessica self-recorded drums in their practice space, with nearly all of the overdubs and vocals added within the cozy confines of their one-room residence, giving new meaning to the term “studio apartment.” Despite the project's homemade origins, it's anything but lo-fi. Jay is a seasoned producer and engineer, having been the go-to recording maven for dozens of bands over the past decade-plus (including Apollo Ghosts, Tough Age, White Poppy and many, many more). //// Consequently, Planet Perfect is an audiophile's amusement park, its kaleidoscopic synthpop refracted through dimensions of sonic detail: the MIDI robo boogie that casts a spell on “Magic Wand,” the sci-fi drama that momentarily swooshes through “Clowning Around,” and the pattering congas that propel closer “After Life” to its ecstatic final crescendo. Guest saxophonist Mitch Davis plays a purring solo that ascends from the top turret of “Zucchini Castle,” and additional parts across the album are contributed by Kelli Ogmundson (backing vocals), Adrienne LaBelle (bass, guitar) and Sean Dunal a.k.a. Sexy Merlin (percussion). //// This vivid palette of sound is brought to life by visual artist Philip Hood, who illustrated the speculative evolution sci-fi book Man After Man (1990), and worked with Jay and Jessica to gloriously depict Planet Perfect’s surreal terrain for the cover artwork. https://energyslime.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:46:04 (Pop-up) |

CO-ED DORMS is an avant-garde Art Punk project composed of bass, violin, semi-electronic drums, and near spoken word vocals. Their debut EP “Enter the Dorms”, released on Feb. 14, 2023, with a sound best described as Neo-Classical Post-Industrial Post-Punk Revival for Pretentious Pricks. Love Is All | Talk Talk Talk | Felt Tip EP | Smashing Time | 2005 | Love Is All is a Swedish five-piece indie pop band from Gothenburg. Paste Magazine has stated that it makes "infectiously lo-fi punk rock laced with saxophone and melodic vocals". Their most acclaimed single, "Make out fall out make up" is included among Pitchfork's 200 best songs of 2000s. After much touring through 2006 and 2007, Eriksson left the band and Love Is All continued on as a quartet. A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night and the remix album Love Is All Mixed Up arrived in 2008, along with Eriksson's replacement Åke Strömer (saxophone, keyboards). SALÒ | Universal Punks Fuck Off | Universal Punks Fuck Off | Vertigo Berlin | 2024 | SALÓ is a mystifying fusion of noise, prog rock and psychedelic music that attempts to imagine a “dreamy and decadent” Roman renaissance. It’s the brainchild of multi-disciplinary artist Emiliano Maggi, who links with Mai Mai’s Toni Cutrone, Wildmen’s Giacomo Mancini, producer Cosimo Damiano and musician, writer and critic Stefano Di Trapani to distill a wellspring of poems, fairytales, anecdotes and mythologies – drawing on mythological symbolism, medieval theater and rural iconography – into an oozing celebration of art, ecstasy and extravagance....they are like a German Metronomy circa 2014...and I love it. | * | 1:11:32 (Pop-up) |
Marie et Les Garcons | Attitudes | 1977/1979 Remastered | Ze Records | 2016 | Marie et les Garçons were a French new wave band formed in Lyon in 1976. After Marie Girard left, the remaining members continued as Garçons. After being discovered by Michel Estaban...they were welcomed as part of the Ze records family...The band were on hold for several months while Fitoussi and Charriau undertook national service, and on their return Esteban and Vidal sought to lead their music more towards the mutant disco style of other ZE artists. While recording their first album in New York, Marie Girard left the group and returned to France, and the band became "Garçons". Their album, Divorce, was released in March 1979, together with a single "French Boy", but neither were commercially successful. Marie Girard joined the band Electric Callas, and also released a solo single, "Les Indiens", in 1983. She later worked as a fashion designer. Fitoussi and Charriau formed a band, Tabou. | 1:14:06 (Pop-up)
Neils Children | Edward the Confessor | Dimly Lit | Boudoir Moderne | 2013 | Neils Children formed in 1999 at Harlow College where John Linger and Brandon Jacobs were studying music with Tom Hawkins. They are seen as forerunners of the mid 2000s 'Southend Scene' which revolved around Junk Club, a club night set up by future Horrors member Rhys Webb, Oliver Abbott, Ciaran O'Shea and John Linger and was considered the most unusual and cutting edge alternative club in the town. Adopted as honorary 'Southenders', Neils Children acted as house band for Junk Club, playing handfuls of shows either as one-off concerts or dates on longer UK tours. The 'Southend Scene' was written about in the pages of NME magazine, the focus of which went on to spawn such groups as The Horrors and These New Puritans, and it has long been noted that Neils Children acted as a catalyst for the scene and the bands involved. The group were much in demand as a support act for up and coming UK bands, being invited to support rising British bands such as Razorlight, Bloc Party, The Horrors, Klaxons and Art Brut on tour as well as completing various British headline tours and shows throughout the UK and Europe. They split in 2010, however reformed to record Dimlly Lit...and then...fini! We shall enjoy this majestic piece of melancholy... | 1:16:26 (Pop-up)

Dame Area | Vengo Dall’aldilà | Toda La Verdad Sobre Dame Area | Humo Internacional/ Mannequin Records | 2024 | This track released Sep 04, 2024. "On September 13th, 2024, Dame Area will unveil their highly anticipated fourth studio album, "Toda la verdad sobre Dame Area" ("The Whole Truth about Dame Area"), a collaboration with the renowned labels Mannequin Records and Humo Records. //// Formed in 2017 within the vibrant underground scene of Barcelona's Màgia Roja club, Dame Area comprises the Italian-Catalan duo Silvia Konstance and Viktor Lux Crux. They fuse industrial-tribal polyrhythms with minimalist synth basslines, drawing profound inspiration from avant-garde masters such as Esplendor Geometrico, Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Einstürzende Neubauten, Can, Coil, Swans, Big Black, and Wolf Eyes. //// This record represents a new phase in Dame Area's discography. It's a big step up in terms of sound, composition and ideas. This record it's the perfect representation of what they have been playing live the last three years and what most people know them for. Also it serves as a companion piece to 2022’s Toda la mentira sobre Dame Area ("All The Lies About Dame Area"), which had a stronger focus on melody, while this latest record is more aggressive and industrial-influenced, with a greater emphasis on percussion. //// ...The confrontational "Vengo dall'aldilà" accelerates with heavy percussion... //// ...Silvia Konstance: vocals, synths, percussions, electronics, production // Viktor L. Less than one month to go! //// Book Stall was one of the first songs we wrote for the album and it came together quickly, built around a syncopated drum groove and some tape-machined saxophone. The lyrics are inspired by collectors and their collections, what becomes of them, what meaning remains, the adventure of books and not knowing the answer! //// The single (and all album) artwork is by Laura Mousavi Zadeh. CAN | Doko E | Limited Edition / Unlimited Edition | United Artists / Harvest / Spoon | 1974 /1976 | Dating from Aug. 73, this track is a Damo Suzuki era CAN early rarity, originally released on both editions of Limited & Unlimited Edition, the earliest compilation of CAN rarities. ":Unlimited Edition is a compilation album by the band Can. Released in 1976 as a double album, it was an expanded version of the 1974 LP Limited Edition on United Artists Records which, as the name suggests, was a limited release of 15,000 copies (tracks 14–19 were added). The album collects unreleased music across the band's history, from 1968 to 1975, and both of the band's major singers (Damo Suzuki and Malcolm Mooney) are featured. The cover photos were taken among the Elgin Marbles in the Duveen Gallery of the British Museum." | 1:47:53 (Pop-up)
Osees | Also The Gorilila... | SORCS 80 | Castle Face Records | 2024 | SORCS80 hit the shelves of the world Aug 9, 2024. Q: "Why did you decide to abandon traditional guitars and keyboards in favor of synth sound and sampler? And how does this album differ from your previous album?" ///////// John Dwyer A: "Basically, like I said earlier, it was just a bit of a challenge and sort of a fun idea that we ran with. We’re at the point now as a band where we can kind of do the fuck we want. I think it keeps it interesting for our fans to not be super formulaic. Not that there’s anything wrong with people writing the same structure or using the same instrumentation. But for us, it keeps things exciting to move things around and see what we can come up with. //// There’s a band, Deerhoof, I always respected because they would switch instruments all the time, which was a real lunacy to watch live. I loved it, seeing like the bass player playing drums and they would just rework their own songs into something that was commendable to me and bold and ambitious and funny and weird. //// So anything like that to me is always exciting and it was easy to do. We’ve done this before, so it’s not super different from other records we’ve done, except for the fact that there’s just no guitar or keyboards. And the addition of a horn section sort of prominently on the record. It still sounds like an OCS record, but slightly different, which is always what we’re vying for." https://ohsees.bandcamp.com/ | * | 1:50:23 (Pop-up) |

Released August 30, 2024 --- "The multi-instrumentalist has always shown his talents, but on Love Rudiments, Segall proves he can make a compelling record without wielding the instruments (including his voice) he is typically associated with. The drums are joined by instruments like vibraphone, which gives the album a mysterious and curious quality, enticing and hypnotising listeners with every note. //// There is also timpani and xylophone which adds extra texture and emotion. Segall highlights the power of working with one main kind of instrument – in this case percussion – and still evoking plenty of mesmerising melodies and rhythms. //// Segall sets up the album by sandwiching the meatiest tracks – both 12 minutes – between shorter ones, such as the almost five-minute ‘First Look/ First Conversation/ Walk Home Pt. 1’ and the six-minute title track. There are infectious moments of pure intensity, which speed and slow to welcome more R&B-inspired grooves at times. //// A wealth of influences are clearly at play here, and Segall presents them in a neatly wrapped bow. It’s a creative project that Segall clearly enjoyed making..." --- https://tysegall.bandcamp.com/ |

I went the second night, it (& all the subsequent nights) were cancelled as the band were, (wait for it)..., sick. They had played the first night
We were given told to send our tickets to Stiff hq & our free copy would be posted to us.
And indeed it was.

And I had taken in my flairs with safety pins, made a necklace out of a earphone lead & bath plugs etc & painted half my face green with some of my mums make up too.
So caught up in my own excitement for my first gig I'd not anticipated the cohones needed to travel from the suburbs to soho dolled up like thst, but I overcame my surprise & trepidation & managed it.
I also had to sneak back into the house & wash my face before me mam saw it, which also distracted me from my disappointment.

I went to school in Central London tho, I'd bunk off Wednesday afternoon sport & go to stiff & rough trade & the hippy comic shop, 'Dark they were & golden eyed' in soho & read the 'anarchist cookbook' d then spend 5 hours to get home coz of all the ira bomb scares at rail stations
I've got loads of things out of the bins at stiff, a rejected ascete for the stiffs live stiffs lp with hand written messages between porky Peckham & Dave Robinson (truly a one off) & bits of the mockups for artwork for the printers etc
I sort of knew slimey toad out of johny moped, (our mothers were friends, his sister was in my class at one point). My brother & I'd hang out at their house at half-term, (but fortunately not at the time Rat Scabies gave them all scabies whilst sofa surfing there)
My brother walked into the kitchen just after soo catwoman (or someone with her hair cut) had cut the hippy locks off Captain Sensible.
That's about the limits to my claims to fame 😉
