Delacave | Fatherless | Every Night is a Moon Rising | Teenage Menopause | 2023 | Released Mar 3, 2023. Delacave are from Strasbourg, France. "Delacave started making music in a very intimate space, a bedroom, discovering and gathering all the necessary imagination for their slow gestation to initiate Gloomy Wave. //// In this fourth album, Liliane Chansard and Seb Normal intermingle their melodies even more, their harmonies sound and dissonance, and their voices adjust. Feverishness becomes strength. The different elements are linked in a blurred gap between coloured impressionism and black baroque. They take us on a journey through the great nowhere on disparate grounds where the efforts that cannot be avoided are never in vain. The strength of lack, the wisdom of emptiness and loss, and the intensity of friendships and discoveries never perish and are always renewed." Delacave (Bandcamp) | 0:01:07 (Pop-up)
Karaocake | Youth Slip | Here & Now | Objet Disque | 2017 | Released March 24, 2017... Trio from Paris. Scant information; but the same lineup & story (and maybe "who did what") likely applied here as their 2010 debut, so let's cut & paste from there: "The project started a few years ago as a one-girl band. Things have changed since then and two regular people made [it] real. //// WHO DID WHAT : - Karaocake (Camille Chambon) writing of the songs, playing of the keyboards, tambourine, melodica, singing, artwork //// - Domotic (Stéphane Laporte) arrangements, production, engineering, bass, guitar, keyboards, drums, piano, backing vocals, percussion, violin, artwork //// Charlotte Sampling (Tom Gagnaire) delicious food, drums, sampling, keyboards, backing vocals, human graffiti, percussions, artwork /////////// KARAOCAKE: Here & Now (Bandcamp) - [available for "name your price"!] | 0:07:13 (Pop-up)
Catharine Buchanan | Sharp Angel (produced by Steven Severin) | Presenting... Catharine Buchanan | Steven Severin | 2024 (Unrel. ~89/90) | Released Aug 26. --- From Steven Severin's [of Siouxsie & The Banshees + solo] September 2024 Newsletter: ""The Orphanage" is the new name for my compilation of homeless tracks. It incorporates "unisexdreamsalon" and adds a further 8 previously unreleased, unheard tracks. Many are demos so the quality is somewhat patchy. Therefore, I have not set a price on this release. Pay what you want, in other words, or not. //// All good things //// Steven PREsenting Catharine Buchanan //// During the hiatus between Peepshow & Superstition, I was asked by our mutual publisher, Tim Madgewick if I would be interested in working with Catharine Buchanan. She was signed to Arista and had released a sole single, "Love Is...". We met for supper, drank too much and got along famously. American, from the East Coast with an air of Breakfast at Tiffany's about her, not withstanding a rich & bawdy sense of humour. There was Russian royalty somewhere in her ancestry. Collected on "Presenting..." are 3* of the 4 demos we did that we expected would be the launch point for her debut album. However, the rather singular & strange songs we delivered were received with horror by the Arista execs who confided to me that they had thought I would "mould" Catharine into the "new" Lisa Stansfield! I was sacked, she was dropped. //// We kept in touch for quite a while but she left the music business and became a florist at the famous hotel, Claridge's . //// Cancer took her 20 odd years ago but I have always been very fond of the work we did and wished it had continued. Again, pay if wish, the important thing for me is that these tracks are finally "out". //// *The fourth track (the proposed single, "Love is Famous") is lost in time as are a couple of extraordinary songs she later created with David Motion as producer, "Disgracelands" & "Oval Mantra". stevenseverin.bandcamp.com/album/presenting-catharine-buchanan (Bandcamp) - [available for "name your price"!] | * | 0:10:55 (Pop-up) |

Kim Deal | Crystal Breath | Nobody Loves You More | 4AD | 2024 | Released yesterday, Aug 28: "Kim Deal Previews Solo LP ‘Nobody Loves You More’ With ‘Crystal Breath’ Musician’s debut solo album will arrive on Nov. 22" //// While “Crystal Breath” is the lead single for the album, she previously released the Steve Albini-helmed “Coast.” Albini, who died in May, is credited as recording engineer for eight of the 11 tracks, which were recorded at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. //// Nobody Loves You More was culled over several years, beginning in 2011 with “Are You Mine?” and “Wish I Was,” following Deal’s coming off Pixies’ Lost Cities Tour, after which Deal moved to Los Angeles. Deal self-released early versions of those tracks as part of a five-part, 10-song vinyl series in 2013. The last recording for the album was also made with her close friend Albini at his studio in November 2022. //// The album, which Deal self-produced, features current Breeders members sister Kelley Deal and Jim Macpherson, and former members Mando Lopez and Britt Walford. Gut Health | Stiletto | Stiletto | Highly Contagious | 2024 | This track released Friday Aug 30, 2024 in Australia... which means NOW! Released TODAY! So over here in EST we get it as a Thursday release & get to play it fresh & shiny for our Australian pals. Yeah!!! You can get the whole album Oct 11. "Gut Health are a six-piece hypnotic dance-punk ensemble from Naarm / Melbourne. Stiletto is their debut album." //// "Stiletto is their debut album. Recorded in 2023 with long-term collaborator Julian Cue (CIVIC, Screensaver) and Gut Health’s Dom Willmott at Button Pusher Studios and APAX Warehouse in Preston, produced by Dom Willmott and bandmate Adam Markmann, mixed by Portland’s Evan Mersky (Lithics) on a 24-track reel-to-reel tape machine, and featuring additional contributions from saxophonist Yang Chen, Gut Health’s debut offering is an immersive ten-track foray into dancefloor-inducing soundscapes and punchy prowess, with songs oscillating between infectious up-tempo numbers, hypnotic bliss and chaotic noise edging precariously toward collapse. Gut Health’s expression of the healing qualities of consensual rage and their unadulterated demonstration of sonic shapeshifting, lingering tension and auditory ambition gives Stiletto its magnetic edge. Tracks flicker between atonality and melodicism, while unpredictably snaking and expanding into engulfing, kaleidoscopic soundscapes, reinforced by a grooveheavy rhythm section that champions the diverse musical backgrounds of each player – spanning punk to jazz to sound design and beyond." 1959 |
"Mingus Ah Um is a studio album by American jazz musician Charles Mingus which was released in October 1959 by Columbia Records. It was his first album recorded for Columbia. The cover features a painting by S. Neil Fujita. The title is a corruption of an imaginary Latin declension. It is common for Latin students to memorize Latin adjectives by first saying the masculine nominative (usually ending in "-us"), then the feminine nominative ("-a"), and finally the neuter nominative singular ("-um")—implying a transformation of his name, Mingus, Minga, Mingum. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. //// The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD calls this album "an extended tribute to ancestors" (and awards it one of their rare crowns), and Mingus's musical forebears figure largely throughout... //// ...""Bird Calls", in Mingus's own words, was not a reference to bebop saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker: "It wasn't supposed to sound like Charlie Parker. It was supposed to sound like birds – the first part."" |

Zia | Helel Yos | Helel Yos | This album is impossible to find on discogs...and I believe this to be the correct attribution. Zia Atabay (born 1942) was an Iranian actor and singer. In Iran, he had his first hit as a pop music singer at the age of 18 and went on to record other popular albums. He also worked as an artists and repertoire manager for CBS Records in Iran, but lost his job in 1979 when Islamic revolutionaries took over the offices. He fled Iran in 1980, living in Europe before moving to Los Angeles in 1986....impressions? This shit is HEAVY AF. And requires a reissue so everyone knows all about ASAP. | 0:37:15 (Pop-up)
Jalil Bennis et Les Golden Hands | Mirza | Mirza 7" | Barclay | 1967 | He was one of the founding fathers of rock n roll in Morocco, his highly energetic song "Mirza", a collaboration with the Golden Hands has gained cult status among a lot of us. Jalil Bennis started playing live shows in the early 1960s among the up and coming scene of a wave of new Moroccan bands such as The Golden Hands, Ouiness, Les Riders, Fadoul and many more. He also released a solo record as Bob Jalil in 1967. This is a cover of the original Mirza made famous by the great Nino Ferrer. | 0:41:58 (Pop-up)
The Rebels | Mother Little Helper | Indian Rebels EP | Monogram | Unknown | It's amazing to hear this song performed using the musical instruments and style that so heavily influenced the original. As it was meant to be, as it were! Meet ‘The Rebels’, Iran’s answer to the Rolling Stones. Nothing from the Middle East screams ‘Rock N Roll’ like The Rebels, who’s name was derived from their rebellious departure from the typical musical sound scape of Iran. Their gritty garage rock soars with snotty vocals, while the recording qualities stay true to what fans of the genre would expect. You’d never imagine this came from The Middle East upon first listen, as it could very well pass for lost Ugly Ducklings recordings. Originals like “Indian Rebels” with its catchy hook and melody, echoed drums and guitar solos, will have you scratching your head in disbelief as to how this sound found itself within Persian record stores in the 60’s and 70’s. | 0:44:19 (Pop-up)
Zohra | Badala Zamana | Badala Zamana 7" | MTMU | 1977 | It is physically impossible to not move your ass or feel incredible joy when you hear this song. It is FEEL GOOD MUSIC. Zohra only released one record carrying her real name. She was born 1950 in Algeria in the village of Tag- hit. Her family moved to France in 1958 and she grew up in Marseille and Said Dizier. In her youth she started to sing and play guitar. In the early 1970s she enrolled at Paul-Beusher Conservatory in Paris to study music. After graduating she pro- ceeded to both teaching music at the University of Nanterre as well as pursuing an active career as a musician, participating in various competitions. One of them secured her a recording deal with Polydor - the birth of the single “Badala Zamana.” She produced it together with French producer Joël Hannier, very much in the vein of the wave of disco productions taking over the world of popular music. | 0:46:39 (Pop-up)
Kit Sebastian | Metropolis | Metropolis Single | Brainfeeder | 2024 | Kit Sebastian, the duo of K. Martin and Merve Erdem, has just dropped a new single called “Metropolis”. It’s the lead track from their upcoming album “New Internationale”, set to release on September 27th via Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’s label. The band says they were inspired by Azerbaijani musicians but put their own spin on it with a western funk groove. They even used an old Italian synth they found in a junkyard. The song is about the immigrant experience – trying to find your place in a new city, dealing with the excitement and freedom of a new start, but also the disappointment that can come with it. French pop with Anatolian psych, Tropicália with early rock ‘n’ roll, and throwing in some soul and prog for good measure...that's Kit Sebastian in a nutshell. | * | 0:49:43 (Pop-up) |
Juniore | Grave | Un, Deux, Trois (Bonus) | Le Phonographe | 2020 | Made up of singer and guitarist Anna Jean, drummer Swanny Elzingre, and the mysterious keyboardist and wearer of giant magician hats that look like he’s wandered in off the set of a Jodorowsky film, the awesome Juniore possess a sound is a perfectly honed mix-up of 60s French ye-ye pop and spooky garage organ, producing a result that’s much like Francoise Hardy; lost in a haunted fairground. Tracks like ‘Grave’ and display the usual haunted garage stomp but with a minimal coolness that is inherently French. There’s lots to love here for fans of 60s pop and Gallic indie, and it’s a perfect soundtrack for walking around, pretending you’re in a Godard film. | 0:53:09 (Pop-up)
Trost | Cowboy | Trust Me | Bronzerat | 2008 | Cowboy, where is your horse? Sounds like this cowboy is...not a great cowboy. Trost is Annika Trost, also of Cobra Killer. This is smooth, spy girl retro chic. Effortless and taunting...this lady is definitely hunter and the cowboy is her hapless prey....Trost hails from Spandau in Germany. Her great grandfather was a local fisherman and she still owns a tiny portion of the ex-fishery on the Havel where he worked. This spot among the bullrushes holds precious memories for Trost...She recalls: “Even when I was growing up there was still an old fisherman fishing eels in the Havel. The Shirehorses | Frank Spencer Blues Explosion | The Worst Album in the World... Ever... EVER! | Warner Bros. | 1997 | Seriously, this is exactly what every John Spencer Blues Explosion song sounds like to me. Perhaps I haven't listened to every single JSBx song out there, but I imagine they all sound exactly like this... I'm glad someone backed me up on this. I'd seen the name Shirehorses circulating in Fall circles for a while but never fully twigged that Marc Riley was key to it... Nor that they recorded two full albums & toured! "The Shirehorses were a spoof band comprising two BBC Radio DJs from Manchester, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley, known collectively as Mark and Lard. //// As part of their BBC Radio 1 shows, the pair produced pastiches of chart songs, such as "You're Gormless", a parody of Babybird's "You're Gorgeous", "Lardy Boy", a parody of Placebo's "Nancy Boy", and "Why Is It Always Dairylea", spoofing Travis's "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?", using the band names 'Baby Bloke', 'Gazebo' and 'Dave Lee Travisty' respectively. When they rewrote The Seahorses' "Love Is the Law" as "(Now) I Know (Where I'm Going) Our Kid", they chose the stage-name Shirehorses, which they then retained for future recordings and performances. Other parodies include "I Want a Roll with It" (spoofing "Roll with It" by Oasis), "Feel Like Shite" ("Alright" by Supergrass), and "Country Spouse" ("Country House" by Blur). //// The band toured extensively, playing many small, university gigs to exploit their popularity with students. However, they also performed at larger venues, supporting Blur on a 1997 UK tour, taking in several stadia, and appearing at Glastonbury Festival in 1997. //// Marc Riley was formerly a member of British Manchester band the Fall and later the Creepers before embarking on a radio presentation career alongside Mark Radcliffe. Formerly a double act on BBC Radio 1, in March 2004 they went their separate ways, Radcliffe initially to BBC Radio 2, Riley to BBC Radio 6 Music and later joined at the station by Mark Radcliffe as part of the afternoon Radcliffe and Maconie show." Pixies | Oyster Beds | The Night The Zombies Came | BMG | 2024 | "Pixies have shared another single from their forthcoming studio album, The Night The Zombies Came, and it is a lean two-minute work of punk rock animated by David Lovering’s insistent beat and wall-of-sound electric guitars with Palme d'Or-worthy tones. //// Titled Oyster Beds, the track was inspired by frontman Black Francis’ painting sessions while the band were holed up at Rockfield Studios, in Wales. The lyrics, which are shared in the video for the track, read like a stream of consciousness, and are described by Francis as “a laundry list of things I was painting over the last couple years.” //// Said paintings are now hanging on the wall at his home. “I took up painting again when we were recording at Rockfield, and I didn’t stop,” he says. //// This is a typical back story for a band whose songwriting has always conjured strong visuals. Out on 25 October – just in time for Halloween – The Night The Zombies Came, is shaping up to be what is known music critic argo as a cinematic release, and appropriately, given the time of year, it appears like the cinematic style is horror. //// ...According to the press release, some of the things that inspired the band when putting The Night The Zombies Came together included, “Druidism, apocalyptic shopping malls, mediaeval-themed restaurants, 12th-century poetic form, surf rock, gargoyles, bog people, and the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s era Fleetwood Mac.”...The album will see Emma Richardson maker her debut on bass guitar, after replacing the outgoing Paz Lenchantin." | * | 1:09:13 (Pop-up) |
We Hate You Please Die | Stronger Than Ever | Chamber Songs | NMAS Editions | 2024 | Full album to be released Sep 20, 2024. (Translated) "We Hate You Please Die is a French punk rock band from Rouen and active since 2017. The group is made up of Chloé Barabé (vocals, bass), Joseph Levasseur (guitar) and Mathilde Rivet (drums). //// The band was [formed] by Raphael Balzary, [original] singer of the group. He was soon joined by Chloé Barabé on bass, then later by Joseph Levasseur (guitar) and Mathilde Rivet (drums). They all began rehearsing together at the beginning of 2017. Their name is a direct reference to 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World'. //// In 2018, they self-produced their debut album, Kids Are Lo-Fi, on the label of the same name (now Incisive Records), allowing them to perform all over France, notably at the Inouïs du Printemps de Bourges and Rock en Seine. In 2020, the EP Waiting Room was released. //// In 2021, their second album Can't Wait To Be Fine was released, judged by Rock & Folk as "a more mature, more detailed and above all much more powerful second album". //// In January 2023, the group announced that it was parting ways with Raphael Balzary on its social networks. Now in a trio, Chloé Barabé takes the lead vocals, the band operates a more nineties music, in the line of the Riot grrrl movement, while maintaining their characteristic committed tone. They are starting a 2023 tour in France and Canada, performing at the Rouen Armada in June 2023. //// In April 2023, they released a double single "Sorority/Control", then Adrenaline and Stronger Than Ever in spring 2024. //// On May 29, 2024, they announced the release of their third album "Chamber Songs", scheduled for September 20 (2024). //// The group stands out for its political, militant and intimate subjects. VR SEX | Hush Money Millionaire | Hard Copy | Dais Records | 2024 | VR SEX are from Los Angeles, California // Released March 22, 2024 "Following 2022’s Rough Dimension LP, Noel Skum – aka Andrew Clinco of Drab Majesty – made the radical leap of expanding his psychedelic post-punk vehicle VR SEX into a fully collaborative five-piece band. To christen the new group’s camaraderie, they booked a block of studio time in Glassell Park, swapped skeletal iPhone demos, and "did that classic thing of a band making the exact record they want without any interference." Working 12-hour days, they banged out the basics in a week, then tracked the rest over a month, fine-tuning it with flourishes, FX, and amplifier experiments. Hard Copy is the result – 10 tracks of sneering psychedelic punk streaked with Chrome-damaged freak-outs and snotty power pop harmonies chronicling sex doll love affairs and glue-sniffing fatales. //// Mixed by guitarist Mike Kriebel – an accomplished engineer with dozens of credits across the punk, goth, and garage underground – the album is dense, rich, and spatial, spurred by Clinco’s muse of "reckless abandon." Shadows of Chrome, Stick Men With Rayguns, Japanese psych, and loud-quiet-loud grunge anthems flicker here and there, but ultimately VR SEX’s mode is more sardonic and saturated, oscillating between ripped leather riffing and space echo meltdowns. Banning plug-ins was a mission statement, with most instruments tracked direct into the board, then guitars added via a daisy chain of amplifiers, panned and mixed and matched for maximum intoxication: "My goal is always to load up every take with as much sound as possible in one pass." //// Lyrically, the record revisits the project’s perennial fascinations: twisted lust, cheap thrills, dirty money, doomed delinquents, and ruined romance amid the creeps and cracked dreamers of gritty city voids. The title refers to the uncanny valley between "facsimile and the real thing, and the illusion that one is better than the other – when both come with their own menu of delights and demonic pleasures." Hard Copy embraces extremes and outliers, delusion and perversion, the conflicted dimensional depths lurking in every exploded heart: "I can be ugly / I can be strong / I can be proper / I can be wrong / I can be lovely / or I can be gone / the thing that will haunt you is still hanging on."" Osees | Cochon D'argent | SORCS 80 | Castleface Records | 2024 | Title translates to "Silver Pig". SORCS80 hit the shelves of the world Aug 9, 2024. "John Dwyer is relentless. The sole continuous member of LA-based garage-rock experimentalists Osees, since 2003 Dwyer has put out an astonishing 29 full-lengths under the name and its various permutations. This incredible run has been sustained by his band’s ability to continuously find hidden rooms and secret passages within their established sound, allowing them to mutate at a steady but inexorable pace." //// More from John Dwyer: "Basically I wrote the demos at home using a synthesizer. I did it on a four-track cassette, which was really fun. Every song was just drum loops, bass, keys, and vocals. One day, me and Tom [Dolas, keyboards] sat down and picked a sound each. I picked a thin, aggressive tone and he picked a more round one with less attack. Then we took those tones and ran them into Pro Tools and into a three-octave keyboard. Then we loaded the songs I’d written into these Roland SPD-SX’s so we could play them like drums, but tonally. The idea initially was that all four of us could be on stage playing them, with Tim Hellman holding down bass guitar. There is bass on the record, but I’m not playing guitar. I originally wanted Tim to play sampler, but we ran out of time for this stupid idea we were running with. But it was interesting to write an entire record using just one sound, but affecting it with guitar amplification." //// "For a while we were into the bloated, gratuitous stuff, which I love. I like prog and big production like Yes, Scott Walker, even Broadway. This is over-the-top in a different way. It’s more tightened up and screwed down. But that doesn't mean we won’t go in a different direction next time. I’ve booked time in a studio next year, and if we’re all still here, we’ll see what we come up with. We might be writing the soundtrack for some marauders across a wasteland by then." ///// "If people don’t want to listen to it, I don’t give a shit. This shit isn’t going to stop unless I’m murdered in the street or something. But it’s fun when fans are excited, when people are like, “Fuck I didn’t expect this.” These are fans that always buy our records, and it makes me happy when they’re happy. I’m doing all this for myself, but I’m also so thankful to our fans for having the attention span." https://ohsees.bandcamp.com/ | * | 1:20:02 (Pop-up) |

"A double L.P. compilation culled from the first 9 ZACHT AUTOMAAT albums, compiled and released by Calico Corp (Meg Remy) in 2013. //// The compilation was viewed, in one sense, as an idealized AUTOMAAT album. We had made and released (either as cassettes with Toronto label MEDUSA and our own E.C.H. label or digitally through direct download and later bandcamp) 10 or 11 albums at that point. A selection of the finest examples was an exciting and promising venture. Almost all the tracks are whole, with the exception of the final long phasing drone (which wouldn't fit). Short pieces were short in their original locations. Some suites of connected songs were left intact, many new and exciting combinations were created - all in the spirit of the original albums." https://zachtautomaat.bandcamp.com/ | 1:22:10 (Pop-up)
Bobby Gillespie | Storms Of Steel | 5 Hectares | XTRM Ltd / Young Tiki | 2024 | Didn't know this was happening...! Surprise soundtrack Gillespie! Released Aug 16, 2024. Yes, this is Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, who does a good job jumping around; pastiching traditional soundtrack territory (for the film-inclined) & then veering deep into Primal Scream-esque vibes, complete with vocals & all the trimmings you'd expect... Back in June he explained: ""In the summer of 2021 I was introduced to the French filmmaker Émilie Deleuze in Paris. She asked me if I would create a soundtrack for a film she intended to make titled Cinq Hectares. When I asked Emilie what the story of the film was about she replied "It's a comedy and road movie , about a guy driving a tractor across France". I love road movies and I had never composed a movie soundtrack before so I immediately said "yes". I recorded the soundtrack in the summer of 2022 in east London with the help of producers James Rand & Thomas Gorton of @godcolony and a bunch of great young musicians they introduced me to, one of which @alwhite who now plays saxophone with Primal Scream. Émilie's film is an absolute cracker and I'm very proud of the soundtrack. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it”" | * | 1:24:08 (Pop-up) |

The Rakes | 1989 | Klang | V2 Records | 2009 | Ahh...indie music of the early 2000s....I absolutely love the peppy yet melancholy chord progressions here. I didn't know about the Rakes. How'd I miss this? The Rakes were an English post-punk band formed in London in 2003. Their first album Capture/Release released in 2005, received a nine out of ten review in the NME and was rated 13th best album of the year in the same paper. The band cited in their influences the Specials, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Pulp. The Rakes supported Franz Ferdinand on their You Could Have It So Much Better... tour during the winter of 2005. They toured the UK throughout January and February 2006, supported by White Rose Movement, Duels, Young Knives, Switches and Klaxons. The band disbanded in October 2009, after six years. In September 2015, Donohoe worked for a Brighton-based company as a software developer. During this time, Donohoe told NME: "Being in The Rakes was an insane rollercoaster, but singing the same songs for seven years got boring in the end. And if you're doing something just because you can't imagine an alternative then you're not really living." | 1:39:04 (Pop-up)
Hyperculte | Distress | La Pangée | Bongo Joe | 2023 | Summer ending is sad and distressing. Hyperculte is a minimalist transpop prekraut postdisco duo band. Hyperculte was formed in 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland Melancholic and nostalgic danse for a poetic trans. or the contrary.... Hyperculte is continuously trying to open hearts at all costs...The duo Hyperculte returns in force with a formidable third album, “La Pangée”. More than just a group, Hyperculte is a supergroup (!) bringing together two figures from the Geneva subculture scene: Vincent Bertholet (Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp) and Simone Aubert (Tout Bleu, Massicot). If you're unfamiliar with the band, expect angry krautrock, high-energy post-punk, and ethereal vocals. Faced with the collapse of our modern world, its failures and the impasse into which we are all rushing, the group makes a political declaration: “this world is dead, glory to the new”. It's about change, struggle, hope and the rebuilding of our communities. | 1:42:09 (Pop-up)
CANNIBALE | Life Is Dead | Life Is Dead | Born Baf | 2021 | No silence at Cannibale, and for the lambs, we'll stay in the lost village where the members of the group live (a hamlet in Normandy, 300 souls, cows included). More than eating men, the guys have been champing at the bit until now. Their story, like their music, is a bit out of the ordinary: a meeting at college for guitarist Manuel and singer Nicolas (up until then it's the story of 99% of rock bands), except that the members of Cannibale have a Frustration profile (they are over forty). What happened for twenty years? The guys believed in it as hard as a crowbar, played in tons of bands that weren't selected for the casting (Boloniaise, Amib, Kouyaté Neerman, Renza Bo, Blast...) and even found themselves studio musicians alongside Camille Bazbaz or... Johnny (we'll come back to that). After winning an Inrocks Labs springboard with their penultimate group (Bow Low) and releasing two albums with Because Editions, the Normans finally decided to create Cannibale in 2016. | 1:44:09 (Pop-up)
Twisted Charm | Never Grow Old | Real Fictional | Because Music | 2007 | How did this record, that came out in 2007...sound like something that came out in 1979...but also 2024? Why is there only one record? Who are these people? I AM OBSESSED. The Times said: "Over the course of three singles, this Northampton four-piece have shown spark and flair, wielding sharp lyrics, loosely phrased, conversational singing and a sonic brew of Stranglers bass, Specials brass and stop-start spasmodics to great effect." The squirming ball of flesh, guitars, tentacles, and faces on the cover is just a taster of the sheer oddity on the actual record: strange instrumentation, eerie production, and fractured lyrics and vocals are Twisted Charm's hallmarks. I am smitten. | 1:47:12 (Pop-up)
Cheveu | Quattro Stagioni | 1000 Mile | Born Bad | 2010 | Born Bad just puts out great music consistently. And has...for a long time. You could say that it is weird pop punk noise symphonic lo-fi, or, to make it short, philharmonic shitgaze, as dubious as this name may be. Because the flights of strings rub shoulders with saturated guitars and vocals, supported by hip hop drum machines, all sprinkled with heterogeneous electro sounds. A fusion, which far from being indigestible, gives the album a sound that could be distinguished among a thousand...CHEVEU blends with strings...this primitive sound, where filthy garage punk and suffering machines fornicate in terrifying chaos of violins and cellos. This band hasn't been active since 2017 and that's a crying shame... | 1:50:20 (Pop-up)

Galatée | Le Juin La Sirène | Le Juin La Sirène RE | Oráculo Records | 2018 | Minimal, Synth wave, Chill wave, Dream pop duo from Russia. Dmitry Gruber is one half of this duo..."multi-instrumentalist, composer, DJ, sound-engineer, artist and supermaster"....we're not sure what supermaster is but hopefully it's not evil... | 1:57:47 (Pop-up) |

The next Sunday, the first full band rehearsal occurred, with drummer Dave Porter and second guitarist John Tucker. In the next three days, Tyranna added 'Johnny' and two covers, and that Thursday, Friday and Saturday debuted at The Turning Point, opening for The Ugly. Tyranna took Sunday off, then over the next few days recorded their first batch of songs on Tucker's trusty 4-track Dokorder 1140."
