Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Isang Yun | Gasa (1963) for Violin & Piano | Compositions of Isang Yun-8 (Akiko Tatsumi and Yuji Takahashi) | Camerata | 1990 | 15 June 1983, Hadano Public Hall. Gasa is a Korean word meaning simply Song—Words and is the name of a Korean narrative art song. It is sung by a woman and is accompanied by a bamboo flute, the Taegum, and an hourglass drum, the Changgo. In Gasa the violin part is modeled on the character of the voice which contrasts such opposite as purity and coarseness, near and far, light and dark. Gasa exists in space. It takes no heed of time—each moment exists in space and that space is unending. Within this (space) however there exists a dramatic development. (Isang Yun) In Gasa Yun combines his central-tone technique with twelve note tone-fields. (Walter-Wolfgang Sparrer, trans. Michael Whiticker) | 0:48:12 (Pop-up) | ||||

Yeah, Nat A. totally underrated. Maybe not in Miles's league conceptually but technically arguably stronger?
doctorjazz:
doctorjazz:
DJ Peter:
Of course the main reason Gregory made that comment is that Nat played the theme (not Cannonball)... which come to think of it...

I always figured the album was conceived as "Miles Davis presents... Cannonball Adderley" but it isn't titled as such.
DJ Peter:
...it got away from me, sorry...

(I just received a "bootleg" live set by Max Roach, 2/27/97, haven't downloaded or listened to it yet, but if it's any good, are you interested?) (have a friend who sends me them, sometimes from the soundboard, sometimes from the audience, sound quality varies).
