Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from April 26, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I went to The Conway Country Store in Nashville. I had been fighting with my ex-girl friend all the way across the U.S of A. But when we saw the clock coming out of Conway's face mounted on a piece of a log, we were good again, and made it all the was to NYC without killing each other.

In happier times we would sing Tight Fittin' Jeans in the car while high on PCP.

Also on that trip, it was the first time either of us saw a Krispy Kreme donuts stand some place out in the sticks.

"Hey little feller, you want a Krispy Kreme?" my estranged partner would say to me when I was falling asleep at the wheel.

There used to be Montreal smoked meat joint here in Berkeley, Augie's, but COVID did it in. Then a place called Delirama opened, stayed viable for a few months, and then shuttered. The owner claimed it was because folks would only order his pastrami, as if demand were too high.

I'm heading to LA in a few weeks. Even though I have business in Orange County, I'm flying into and staying near LAX, a benefit of which is proximity to my favorite pastrami joint, Johnnie's. It's nothing like the NYC deli sandwich.

Montreal smoked meat. Viande fumée. A gloriously specific preparation with a generic name.

Last time I was in Montreal, I tried to go to Schwartz's. There was a line down the block. I went to a grubby little place across the street instead, and had one of the great sandwiches of my life. Leonard Cohen smiled down at me, smoking a cigarette, from a poster on the wall.
