Bryan Ferry | The In Crowd | Another Time, Another Place | Virgin | 1974 | Another Time, Another Place was Bryan Ferry's second studio album as a solo artist. The album reached #4 in the UK charts in 1974. Recording took place in London at Island, Ramport and AIR studios. Robert Christgau wrote of the album "Comedy routines are rarely as funny the second time around, especially when you've used up your best lines--"The `In' Crowd" is the only zinger Ferry comes up with here." And his version of the song definitely slaps! "The 'In' Crowd" is a 1964 song written by Billy Page and arranged by his brother Gene and originally performed by Dobie Gray on his album Dobie Gray Sings for "In" Crowders That Go "Go-Go". The Ramsey Lewis Trio recorded an instrumental cover of the tune in May 1965. This tune is 100% swinging 60's. | 0:11:44 (Pop-up)
The Clash | Police On My Back | Sandanista! | Sony | 1980 | "Police on My Back" is a 1967 song originally released by The Equals from their second studio album Explosion. In 1980, the song was covered by The Clash. "Police on My Back" was written by Eddy Grant and recorded by his band The Equals for their second studio album Explosion in December 1967. The song was described as being: "an expression of Jamaican rude boy culture", and the Clash's version was described as a "punk anthem at a time of political and social repression", and as their "most full-throated rock song since I Fought The Law."[ | 0:17:59 (Pop-up)
The Saints | River Deep, Mountain High | River Deep, Mountain High 7" | Victrola | 1977 | The Saints were an Australian rock band formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 1973. Founded by singer-songwriter Chris Bailey, drummer Ivor Hay, and guitarist-songwriter Ed Kuepper, they originally employed fast tempos, raucous vocals and a "buzzsaw" guitar sound that helped initiate punk rock in Australia and identified them with the greater international movement. Their take on this tune amps up Tina's energy even further with one reviewer crediting the Saints with "exploding (them) almost beyond recognition with energy". | 0:19:37 (Pop-up)
The Donnas | Da Do Ron Ron | Da Doo Ron Ron Single | Super*Teem! | 1996 | The Donnas were an American rock band formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1993. The band consisted of Brett Anderson, Allison Robertson, Maya Ford and Torry Castellano. This 1996 cover checks their love of fast living girl groups and rock and roll...with an uptempo, intense take on a classic. The Crystals recorded "Da Doo Ron Ron" in March 1963 at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. It was produced by Phil Spector in his Wall of Sound style. Jack Nitzsche was the arranger and Larry Levine the engineer. The drummer was Hal Blaine. The song was composed over two days in Spector's office in New York. The title "Da Doo Ron Ron" was initially just nonsense syllables used as dummy line to separate each stanza and chorus until proper lyrics could be written, but Spector liked it so much that he kept it.[ | 0:23:36 (Pop-up)
Bananarama & Fun Boy Three | Really Sayin' Something | Really Sayin' Something 7" | London Records | 1982 | He Was Really Sayin' Somethin' is a soul song written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield, William "Mickey" Stevenson, and Edward Holland, Jr. in 1964. Originally recorded by the Velvelettes, Bananarama's 1982 single became the second consecutive top-five hit for both Bananarama and Fun Boy Three, peaking at number five in the UK singles chart. It also received heavy play on the then-young MTV network in America. "Really Saying Something" was both groups' second chart entry in Australia, peaking at number seventy-four. | 0:25:02 (Pop-up)
The Specials | Sock It To Em, JB | More Specials | Chrysalis Records | 1980 | Originally penned and performed by Rex Garvin & The Mighty Cravers, Sock It To Em,JB is a staple on many a dancefloor, though it remained mostly an underground hit. The Specials revived the tune for their More Specials album release and this tune definitely became a highlight of their live shows. Doesn't matter who is performing it, this tune is a geniuine STOMPER, capitalizing on the popularity of the James Bond movies that were the all the rage that decade... | 0:27:48 (Pop-up)

Iggy Pop | (I Feel Like A) Sex Machine | Lust For Life/ Sex Machine 7" | Virgin | 1996 | Indeed, the funkiest outing Pop has ever had; this is a hilarious yet majestic take on the original. Pop’s unhinged screams of “Get Up!” and the versatility of his ensuing vocal performance make it one of his most captivating sonic outings. He honours James Brown, the ‘Godfather of Soul’ with a whole load of attitude and sex appeal. Who can be surprised? In terms of attitude and bedroom antics, both Brown and Pop have a lot more in common than you’d initially think. Fans of cocaine, alcohol, and possessed on-stage performers, this cover is the one we never knew we needed. Just like Brown on the original, Pop provides the heat. | 0:38:19 (Pop-up)
Luchito & Nestor | Tighten Up | Tighten Up 7" | Original Gravity | 2021 | Yet another take on a classic. Not much to be found on Luchito and Nestor save they have released several singles. This song of course originally written and performed by Archie Bell and the Drells.... | 0:42:17 (Pop-up)
The Fall/Mark E Smith | Ghost In My House | The Best of Live: The Fall & Mark E Smith | Secret Records | 2018 | I wanted to play Ghost in My House by R Dean Taylor as the Fall cover...but we've already played it twice! Luckily I DID unearth this live recording. I have thoughts. Let's discuss this in all its ragged glory... | 0:46:25 (Pop-up)
The Ramones | Little Bit O' Soul | Subterranean Jungle | Sire | 1983 | Marked by inner turmoil culminating in the sacking of Marky Ramone (who is relegated to a barely-visible window cameo on the cover, in stark contrast to his front-centre bandmates), Subterranean Jungle is the musical equivalent of a person’s last attempts at salvation before drowning or being pulled under by quicksand. While this cover kicking off the album showed lots of promise...the rest of this Ramones record is not...well regarded. But props to the Ramones for sticking to their love of bubblegum 60's pop. This particular version keeps its bounce and in my books, Joey can't really do any wrong. "Little Bit O' Soul" is a song written in 1964 by British songwriters John Carter and Ken Lewis. It was originally recorded by Coventry band The Little Darlings, and released in 1965 on Fontana Records in the UK. In 1967, the song was popularized in the United States by garage band The Music Explosion, whose version went to No. 1 on the Record World 100 Top Pops chart. and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. | 0:50:03 (Pop-up)
The Jam | Heatwave | Setting Sons | Polydor | 1979 | "Heat Wave" is a 1963 song written by the Holland–Dozier–Holland songwriting team. and was first made popular by the Motown vocal group Martha and the Vandellas. Setting Sons is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Jam. In contrast to its pop-oriented predecessor, Setting Sons features a much harder, tougher production, albeit with the emphasis on melody common throughout the Jam's discography. Originally conceived as a concept album by Weller...the liner notes imply that production was rushed and simply ran out...hence the inclusion of covers including this one! | 0:52:43 (Pop-up)
The English Beat | Tears of a Clown | I Just Can't Stop It | Go-Feet Records | 1981 | This sweet ska take on the Smokey Robinson hit is a mainstay of 2nd wave Ska and Two Tone. This song originally did not appear on the UK release but was added to the American release and subsequent UK pressings. | 0:55:07 (Pop-up)

The Belle Stars | Needle In A Haystack | Belle-issima! Sweet Memories... | The Belle Stars | 1981 | Norman Jesse Whitfield (May 12, 1940 – September 16, 2008) was an American songwriter and producer, who worked with Berry Gordy's Motown labels during the 1960s. He has been credited as one of the creators of the Motown Sound and of the late-1960s subgenre of psychedelic soul. At 19, Whitfield began frequenting Motown's Hitsville USA offices for a chance to work for the growing label. Founder Berry Gordy Jr. recognized Whitfield's persistence and hired him for the quality control department, which determined which songs would or would not be released. Whitfield joined Motown's in-house songwriting staff, co-writing the Marvin Gaye hit "Pride & Joy", the Marvelettes's "Too Many Fish in the Sea" and the Velvelettes's "Needle in a Haystack". The Belle Stars formed after the all-female two-tone band The Bodysnatchers broke up in 1980, guitarists Stella Barker and Sarah-Jane Owen, saxophonist Miranda Joyce, keyboardist Penny Leyton, and drummer Judy Parsons decided to form a new band, recruiting bass player Lesley Shone and lead vocalist Jennie Matthias (also known as Jennie Bellestar). Their biggest hit was "Sign of the Times" which peaked at #3. | 1:05:54 (Pop-up)
DEVO | Working In The Coal Mine | Working In The Coal Mine 7" | Warner | 1981 | "Working in the Coal Mine" is a song with music and lyrics by the American musician and record producer Allen Toussaint. It was an international hit for Lee Dorsey in 1966, and has been recorded by other musicians including Devo in 1981. In Devo's hands the dystopian crush of capitalism becomes even more mechanized.... | 1:08:47 (Pop-up)
The Plastics | Last Train To Clarkesville | Last Train To Clarkesville 7" | Island | 1981 | Plastics, or the Plastics, were a short-lived Japanese new wave band who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their music was a major influence on Japanese pop music and their songs have been covered by many bands, most notably Polysics, Pizzicato Five, and Stereo Total. They are positively delightful and this wonky cover is especially charming. The song was written by the songwriting duo of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. Boyce has said that the song's opening guitar part (played by Louis Shelton) was an attempt to emulate the type of memorable and clearly identifiable riff that the Beatles had used in songs such as "I Feel Fine," "Day Tripper" and "Paperback Writer". The Monkees of course made this song famous, and it appeared in their show more than any other song, a total of 7 times.... | 1:11:23 (Pop-up)
Naked Eyes | Always Something There To Remind Me | Always Something There To Remind Me / Pit Stop 7" | EMI | 1981 | Naked Eyes weren't as cool as Depeche Mode, or OMD...or even Duran Duran. But they nailed it with this tune. Written by Bacharach/David and demo'd by Dionne Warwick...Naked Eyes was formed by Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher. The two had formerly been part of a band called Neon, with future members of Tears for Fears. Also some would call this British band forgettable, they had another huge hit with their song "Promises Promises" and "When the Lights Go Out" Following the release of the band's second album, Byrne moved to California. He performed on Stevie Wonder's "Part-Time Lover", sang backgrounds with Rita Coolidge and Princess Stephanie, and wrote and produced for the Olsen twins. | 1:14:27 (Pop-up)
The Psychedelic Furs | Mack The Knife | Pretty In Pink/Mack The Knife 7": | Columbia | 1981 | The Psychedelic Furs’ version of ‘Mack The Knife’ served as the B-side to ‘Pretty In Pink’ and was later featured as a non-LP B-side on the band’s self-titled studio album, appearing alongside tracks like ‘India’, ‘Flowers’ and ‘Sister Europe’. Full of angular riffs and churning beats, it’s a perfect blend of krautrock propulsion and British popcraft. If only old Brecht had lived long enough to hear it. Originally popularized by Bobby Darin after seeing Threepenny Opera...it was also performed by Billie Holliday and Louis Armstrong. | 1:18:07 (Pop-up)
Swervedriver | Reflections | Think I'm Gonna Feel Better/Reflections Single | Dangerbird Records | 2019 | Swervedriver have been steadily increasing their output since the end of their decade-long break-up. The ’90s British shoegaze band got back together in 2015 and have been releasing steadily, with a new album released just this year. Reflections is a double A-side EP featuring covers of “Reflections” by the the Supremes and “I Think I’m Going To Feel Better” by Gene Clark. The EP was originally released on 2019 Record Store as a 7". "Reflections" is a 1967 song recorded by American soul music group The Supremes for the Motown label. The single release was the first Supremes record credited to "Diana Ross and the Supremes", and the song was one of the last Motown hits to be written and produced by Holland–Dozier–Holland before they left the label. | 1:22:27 (Pop-up)

Lydia Lunch | Done Dun | Honeymoon in Red | Widowspeak | 1982 | Actually more The Birthday Party than LL. Featuring "Her Dead Twin", (AKA Nick Cave), Tracy Pew, Roland S. Howard & Dick Sturm (AKA Mick Harvey), writing creditted to Murray Mitchell (Fur Bible, Siouxsie & The Banshees, et. al) -- "Mick Harvey has stated that the project was originally conceived as a new band; a collaboration between Harvey, Lunch, Genevieve McGuckin and Rowland S. Howard. After the initial recording sessions in Berlin in June 1982, the tapes languished without a release. In 1987 Lunch readied the tapes for release on her own Widowspeak label, with added contributions by J.G. Thirlwell and Thurston Moore. Lunch had already fallen out with Nick Cave and Harvey, and they insisted that their names not appear on the release, as they had no hand in the remix and overdubbing. Lunch subsequently used pseudonyms for Cave and Harvey (including "A drunk cowboy junkie" and "Dick Strum", respectively) and obliquely criticized them in her liner notes as "tight asses" and "sheep in wolf's clothing". The album originally appeared in this reworked form but has subsequently been reissued with the mixes from the original 1982 Berlin sessions. //// A 12" single of "Done Dun" (a Cave/Lunch duet) was released on side B of the Lydia Lunch/Thurston Moore/Clint Ruin single "The Crumb", and referred to The Honeymoon in Red Orchestra. //// Trouser Press called it "not a great album by any means, but of definite interest to fans of those involved."" | 1:35:14 (Pop-up)
Dirty Three | Love Changes Everything I | Love Changes Everything | Drag City | 2024 | Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White are back as Dirty Three, and have announced Love Changes Everything, their first album in 12 years, that will be out June 28 via Drag City. The trio made the record at Melbourne’s Headgap Studios with engineer Nick Huggins behind the boards. It was recorded in five days but they spent a year mixing it. //// The album consists of “Love changes everything” in six parts, with the trio’s raw live-in-studio recordings having been “untethered from its streams of consciousness and reconsidered as a recording; brought to bear through edits, overdubs and mixes, resequenced and made suite-like. Made into this album.” Dirty Three have shared the first part, which finds their unique violin/guitar/drums alchemy as fiery as ever. Einstürzende Neubauten | Isso Isso | Rampen – APM: Alien Pop Music | Potomak | 2024 | On April 5th, 2024, Einstürzende Neubauten released a double album: Rampen – apm: alien pop music. //// "Einstürzende Neubauten, the Berlin-based avant-garde art-rock collective, has been redefining the boundaries of experimental music for over four decades. Known for their innovative use of custom-built instruments and found objects, Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, Rudolph Moser, and Felix Gebhard blend industrialized noise with poignant melodies, forever challenging the boundaries of the conventional. //// Einstürzende Neubauten has been a pioneer in the art of “Rampen” on stage since the mid-1980s. These are public improvisations that serve as launchpads into the unknown, characterized by their open-ended developments and outcomes. The band has recorded their 2022 “Rampen” performances during the encores of their latest Alles in Allem tour, which forms the foundation of this new album. This innovative approach not only shapes the new collection of studio recordings, but also weaves a central theme of change, utopian visions, and transience through every track, acting as a common thread that ties the music together. //// Rampen – apm: alien pop music is described as pop music for parallel universes and in-between worlds ‒ for hyperspaces and interzones. It is microcosmic and intergalactic at the same time. It’s a demi-sophisticated claim outside of all physical laws, with which Einstürzende Neubauten enters a stylistic no man’s land between the past and future. There’s a return to the roots on one side, while a new art form emerges on the other from powerful eruptions of noise encountering cryptic, often fragmentary lyrics: popular music for aliens and outcasts..." | * | 1:44:17 (Pop-up) |
These Immortal Souls | Get Lost (Don't Lie!) [Live] | Extra | Mute | 2024 | The title song from their debut album, except they never released it officially on that album or any other. Now that has changed, it is available (a live version) on a rarites comp released last Friday... "Mute presents EXTRA a brand new album of unearthed live recordings and remastered tracks by Australian London-based post-punk band These Immortal Souls, on vinyl and CD. //// This record includes extensive sleeve notes by original member Harry Howard and is released alongside the 2024 remaster editions of their debut album, Get Lost (Don’t Lie!), and their second album I’m Never Gonna Die Again. The tracklist for this record features their visceral, propulsive reimagining of Alice Cooper’s 1972 track “Luney Tune,” as well as covers of “Open Up and Bleed” by Iggy Pop & James Williamson, “Some Velvet Morning” written by Lee Hazlewood, which lead singer Rowland S. Howard notably covered with Lydia Lynch, and “Hey! Little Child” written by Alex Chilton. //// The band consisted of Australian-born Rowland S. Howard, who rose to prominence as Nick Cave’s collaborator in the Birthday Party, his bass-playing brother Harry Howard, drummer Epic Soundtracks (formerly of Swell Maps and Jacobites), and keyboardist Genevieve McGuckin. They came together in 1987, after Soundtracks and the Howard brothers split from Crime & the City Solution and were joined by McGuckin to form These Immortal Souls in London." https://theseimmortalsouls.bandcamp.com/ | * | 1:49:10 (Pop-up) |
Grinderman | Grinderman 2 | Worm Tamer | Mute | 2011 | "Grinderman is an alternative rock band formed by Nick Cave (vocals, electric guitar, organ, piano), Warren Ellis (electric bouzouki, Mandocastor, violin, viola, acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Martyn P. Casey (bass, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) and Jim Sclavunos (drums, percussion, backing vocals) in London, United Kingdom in 2006. All members are also active musicians in Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and the band, originally known as Mini Seeds, were formed as "a way to escape the weight of The Bad Seeds." The band's name is inspired by a Memphis Slim song, "Grinder Man Blues", which Cave is noted to have started singing during one of the band's early rehearsal sessions." | 1:53:46 (Pop-up)
Mick Harvey | The Man With The Cabbage Head (L'Homme à Tête de Chou) | Delirium Tremens | Mute | 2016 | "Delirium Tremens is the third of four albums by Mick Harvey, presenting the songs of Serge Gainsbourg, sung in English. It was preceded by Intoxicated Man in 1995 and Pink Elephants in 1997, and followed by Intoxicated Women in 2017." Personnel: Bass – Bertrand Burgalat / Drums – Toby Dammit / Electric Guitar [Electricity Guitar] – J.P. Shilo / Piano – Yoyo Röhm / Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards – Mick Harvey... of note... Toby Dammit is also a collaborator in Nick Cave & The Bad seeds; JP Shilo is a guitar / bass player from Melbourne, Australia, from groups such as Blackeyed Susans, Hungry Ghosts, The Ensemble Of Shades... "Burgalat is known for his 1960s-style pop sound, something he has lent to his production work with Air, April March, A.S Dragon, Cinnamon, Dalcan, Jad Wio, Mick Harvey, Louis Philippe and the French writer Michel Houellebecq. His musical influences include the "yé-yé" sound of French pop made famous by France Gall, Françoise Hardy and Brigitte Fontaine, as well as the singers Jacques Dutronc and Serge Gainsbourg, as well as the 'folk-music of the Ruhr' created by Kraftwerk." | 1:57:12 (Pop-up)

"Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have been making beautifully morose music together for more than three decades. In addition to their longtime collaboration in Cave’s Bad Seeds band, the pair have also teamed up for a more than a dozen soundtrack score albums, including their new score for the Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black." //// "The film, an extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, is out in cinemas in the UK and Ireland (12th April) and in North America on 17th May. //// The film’s sensitive underscore was provided by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. “Sam [Taylor-Johnson, Director] wanted a very particular sound for the underscore – achieving heartbreak without being sad, without overindulging in the tears,” says music producer Giles Martin. “I think Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are musical geniuses and they understand what that is. It’s a complete treat to be able to collaborate and work with them. I think the results are truly amazing.” //// The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame.
