John Manolesco | Character Study [Excerpt] | Astrology Guide for Taurus | RCA | 1970 | For all the Tauruses out there, including those born today. Happy Birthday. "The test of an astrologer, John Manolesco says, is the accuracy of his predictions. This is the supreme test, and John Monolesco passes, having accurately forecast the assassinationjs of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy and the resignation of de Gaulle - to the precise week - months before the famous referendum..." | 0:00:00 (Pop-up)

The Pipes And Drums And The Military Band Of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards | Amazing Grace | Amazing Grace | BMG Music | 1972 | Apparently, this was #1 on the charts in the U.K. on April 25, 1972. Happy Birthday, Babs! | 0:05:48 (Pop-up)
The Fall | Birthday Song (speed x 1.75) | The Marshall Suite | Artful Records | 1999 | Though I love the languorous languidness of the original track (from The Fall's stunning Phoenix-out-of-the-ashes 1999 album "The Marshall Suite"), there is something truly compelling by what happens when helping it along by a rate of x1.75... Perhaps now my favourite way to listen to it. We've played it before, sure, but not travelling at this speedy clip. "Julia Adamson [AKA Julia Nagle, Fall keyboardist at the time] on the track: "It was initially an instrumental I called it Birthday Song as it was my sister's birthday and I gave it to her on a CD for a present. MES always liked it. On a separate occasion I asked him to write a 'love' poem and after a couple of goes was finished and fabulous I thought. MES decided to put the instrumental and poem together for The Marshall Suite."" | 0:09:46 (Pop-up)
The Fabulous Downey Brothers, Fred Schneider | Sex & Chips | VR | Sprix Records | 2022 | Not sure what this is all about or what to make of it, but it is from 2022 and features Fred Schneider. One thing I could find was that the B-52's and The Fabulous Downey brothers played together at the Oregon Zoo Ampitheatre on June 27, 2015, so it seems this union has been a while in the making... Excerpt from a review at that time... "Master of ceremonies Fred Schneider III, being his usual offbeat, subtly sarcastic self, offered up humorous comments and banter between songs and clearly enjoyed himself and the boisterous crowd." "Opening the evening were Olympia, Washington’s The Fabulous Downey Brothers with their Devo-esque, self-described performance of "zolo, new wave, digi punk, art-ernative" music and performance art." | 0:11:11 (Pop-up)
Altin Gün | Vallahi Yok | Vallahi Yok / Kırık Cam | ATO Records | 2024 | Released April 9, 2024. Altın Gün, Turkish psych-folk innovators, return with a glimmering new single consisting of two original songs composed by Merve and Jasper. The release is a farewell to Merve and coincides with the band's sold-out show at the legendary L’Olympia in Paris, which is also the first date of their spring European club tour. Merve will leave Altın Gün in May and the band will proceed as a five-piece. More tour dates and music are rumoured to be ahead in 2024. Altin Gün (Bandcamp) | * | 0:14:49 (Pop-up) |

Krokodil Solo |
Sunset Records |
1970 |
Rock drummer and graphic designer from Switzerland, born 1946, Real Name: Kurt Dürst. "Düde Dürst is the drummer of the psych-kraut jazzy collective Krokodil. This solo album is in the kosmische-trancey krautrock vein with long instrumental parts, various moods and colours. This is authenticaly progressive with many arrengements and fabulous percussive drum sets. The two epic compositions are divided into several themes. The magnificant improvisation called Chemical Harvest first starts with soulful-acid jazzy notes before to go into mystical-darkness, including exotic instrumentation, mantra-like atmospheres. The song is mainly built around a vast collection of drums. The ambiences are quiet ritual, cinematic and haunted. The piece ends with a light-sunny jazz rockin' instrumental, including dancing flutes, grand piano melodies...The Sound of Sunshine is a more spacious and druggy stuff with propulsive-dynamic drum improvs, tripped out fuzzy bass lines. The soundscape is absolutely gorgeous and hallucinatory epic. The last minutes of the instrumental features luminous entrance kraut-folkish grooves (reminiscence of Rufus Zuphall). Almost a classic and an obvious recommendation for fans of unconventional-freely improvised music." //// This is the closer of his first solo album, from the "The Sound Of Sunshine" side (side B). |

Stinky Toys | Birthday Party | Stinky Toys | Sony Music | 1979 | Stinky Toys were a French punk rock band from Paris which formed in 1976 and featured Elli Medeiros (vocals), Denis Quilliard, alias Jacno, (a.k.a. Jan Colrth) (rhythm guitar), Bruno Carone (lead guitar), Albin Dériat (bass guitar), and Hervé Zénouda (drums). One of the first French new wave bands, in 1976 the band took part in the 100 Club Punk Festival in London, sharing the bill with such bands as Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Buzzcocks. The band split up in 1979, with Elli Medeiros and Jacno then forming the duo, Elli et Jacno. Medeiros went on to a solo career, releasing the Bom Bom... album in 1987...."The concept of a French punk band with a female singer seemed remarkably promising when Stinky Toys first began gigging around London in late 1976. A year later, this record came as a major disappointment, consisting as it does of uninspired sub-Rolling Stones rock’n’boogie with terrible vocals by Elli Medeiros, who went on to a solo career that never brought her any acclaim in the English-speaking world.[Ira Robbins]" OUCH. | 0:28:21 (Pop-up)
Cibo Matto | Birthday Cake | Viva! La Woman | Warner | 1996 | Listening back to this, I cannot help but feel how much this band was ahead of its time. Al ot of people look for a deeper meaning behind this song...often of a troubled relationship between a mother and her son, and the inability to communicate between generations. Either way, it's drugs and food which is pure Cibo Matto and we love them for it. Formed in 1993/4 and active until 2002, "Crazy Food" will always be cool. | 0:31:13 (Pop-up)
Iggy Pop | Tight Pants | I'm Sick of You! | Bomp! | 1977 | This earlier version of Shake Appeal is I feel...superior. More visceral, more raw, more unhinged...just more Stooges. Why they changed it I'll never know. From the enthusiastic count-off and in, Tight Pants is overloaded gutterpunk blooze straight outta 1972; nagging, insistent, a proper primal scream of snakehip guitars with needles ramped round in the red. There are Supremes handclaps perhaps, or maybe just a heavily slapped snare – it’s hard to tell from the cardboard box production – alongside riff upon riff of juddering guitar, vying for earspace with the Iggy barks and yelps, but far as garage band rockers go, it’s a whole lot of don’t-give-a-damn snarling fun, with a guitar solo in the outro that sounds like a wheezing tramp running over broken glass. It’s oft-considered a sloppy production, out of step with the musical landscape of the era, but it certainly captures a proto-punk spirit that would, within a few years, be omnipresent in the underground. Iggy Pop's birthday is April 21st, 1947...Happy Birthday Poppa Iggy! | 0:34:29 (Pop-up)
Brian Eno | Backwater | Before and After Science | Island Records | 1977 | Unlike Eno's previous albums, which were recorded in a very short time, Before and After Science was two years in the making.During this two-year period, Eno was busy working on his solo ambient music albums Music for Films and Discreet Music. Due to the very positive critical reception accorded his previous rock music-oriented album, Another Green World, Eno was afraid of repeating himself but still wanted to release a high-quality product. As on his previous rock-based recordings, Eno worked with a plethora of guest musicians such as Fred Frith and Jaki Liebeszeit of CAN, who provided drums for this track. Phil Collins and Robert Fripp also appear on the album. Eno referred to the music of Before and After Science as "ocean music", as opposed to Another Green World', which he described as "sky music"...either way it is essential listening, for sure! May 15th, 1948 is when Brian Peter Geoge Eno was born. | 0:36:41 (Pop-up)
The Cure | Just Like Heaven | Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me | Fiction Records | 1987 | "Just Like Heaven" is a song by British alternative rock band the Cure. The group wrote most of the song during recording sessions in southern France in 1987. The lyrics were written by their frontman Robert Smith, who drew inspiration from a past trip to the sea shore with his future wife. Smith's memories of the trip formed the basis for the song's accompanying music video. Before Smith had completed the lyrics, an instrumental version of the song was used as the theme for the French television show Les Enfants du Rock. In order to develop material for Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Smith forced himself to write music for 15 days of each month. During this regimen, he developed the chords and melody which form the basis of "Just Like Heaven". According to Smith, "The song is about hyperventilating—kissing and fainting to the floor." The lyrics were inspired by a trip with his then-girlfriend (and later wife) Mary Poole to Beachy Head in southern England. Smith said the opening line of the song ("Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick") refers to his childhood memories of mastering magic tricks, but added "on another [level], it's about a seduction trick, from much later in my life". The lovely and wonderful Robert Smith's birthday is April 21st, 1959 | 0:40:19 (Pop-up)
Grace Jones | Warm Leatherette | Warm Leatherette | Island Records | 1980 | Warm Leatherette, Jones’ career-shifting 1980 release, gives a glimpse of the artist just as her true genius was coming into sharp focus. Having spent the ’70s essentially exploding the fashion world as a model and muse, Jones’ career as a musician was still something of a novelty. Her first three albums—Portfolio, Fame, and Muse—were fun but somewhat facile, cover-filled reflections of the druggy hedonism of the disco era, which itself was already on the wane. So it was that, while stepping into the 1980s, Jones sought about drastic change and creative rebirth. In doing so, her next body of work would also reflect the blossoming radicalism of pop’s new wave—music that would upend the staid conventions of nightlife, feminist politics, and tired ideas about sexuality. Grace Jones was born May 19th, 1948. | 0:43:47 (Pop-up)

Wine Lips | High On Your Own Supply | Super Mega Ultra | Stomp Records | 2024 | "The new record “Super Mega Ultra” is an absolute beast. Recorded by Simon Larochette at The Sugar Shack in Ontario, the album is jam-packed with 12 ramped-up supersonic ear-scorching auditory delicacies. SMU is probably Wine Lips’ most ambitious undertaking to date, exploring new thematic territory while firmly maintaining their signature psych garage punk rock panache. You truly need to hear the album to believe it… And if you haven’t already guessed, more endless touring is booked for 2024. The wild ride continues! //// "It's tough writing a new record when you're always on tour. The previous album seemed to be doing really well and at times I felt like I was hitting a wall creatively. Long story short, I think this album turned out great. Simon always brings a good vibe at the Sugar Shack and we were able to try some new ideas and capture the energy without straying too far from our roots. Excited to see where these songs take us in the future." – Cam Hilborn (Wine Lips Frontman) //// “Now that’s what I call music!” – IGGY POP BBC Radio (Iggy Pop Frontman) //// Wine Lips (Bandcamp) | * | 0:58:13 (Pop-up) |
Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds | A Beast, A Priest | That Delicious Vice | In the Red Records | 2024 | Released April 19. “It's a new lineup,” landlord of the avant-garage Kid Congo Powers exclaims of the Pink Monkey Birds edition responsible for the fifth studio full-length of their 19 year recording career, That Delicious Vice. //// “We've gone from a four piece to a three piece,” continues Kid, whose unique guitar style has been at the center of some of the most forward-thinking bands in punk and garage: The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Knoxville Girls, to name a handful. //// “I'm not sure if living in the desert is making me want more space in music or not,” laughs Kid, a Tucson resident for a few years now. “Maybe I’m turning into a desert stoner rocker. But I'm not a stoner, so that's not happening.” | * | 0:59:20 (Pop-up) |
The Monochrome Set | He's Frank | He's Frank (7") | Rough Trade | 1979 | Released: Jan 1979, A side of the 7" of the same name. "The Monochrome Set was formed in London in 1978 from the remnants of a college group called The B-Sides, whose members had included Stuart Goddard, later known as Adam Ant. Their first live gig was on 15 Feb 1978, at Westfield College in London. The original line-up consisted of Indian-born lead singer and principal songwriter Bid (real name Ganesh Seshadri), Canadian guitarist Lester Square (real name Thomas W.B. Hardy), drummer John D. Haney (formerly of The Art Attacks) and bass guitarist Charlie X. The band had two more bassists, Jeremy Harrington and Simon Croft, before Andy Warren of the Ants, a childhood friend of Bid, joined in late 1979. Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths were influenced by the band. //// Experimental filmmaker Tony Potts began collaborating with the band in 1979, designing lighting and stage sets with film projections for their live appearances. The band's early persona was defined by the shadowy, uncertain stage images created by the films to such an extent he is often described as being the band's "fifth member". //// They released several singles for the Rough Trade label before recording their debut studio album, Strange Boutique, produced by Bob Sargeant for Virgin Records' imprint DinDisc in 1980." [After a few lineup changes and albums, they stopped in 1985, later reforming in the 90's & beyond. In fact, they still continue to this day, recording new material & releasing new albums.] | 1:03:12 (Pop-up)

"Weird Al" Yankovic | Beat On The Brat | Dr. Demento Covered in Punk | Caf Muzeck | 2018 | Generally I have avoided making the music of Alfred Matthew Yankovic an active part of my life, but I guess I'm making an exception for this day. Fell into a bit of a "unlikely covers of Ramones songs" rabbit hole here; led into it by (then distracted from) a search for lesser-known Fred Schneider content. They have provided the following hashtags: punk dancepunk no wave post-punk weird funk Netherlands. Looking at their instagram, this band like hats, line drawings and moustaches. Do not confuse this wonderful and angular band with Geo Dijkhuis, the versatile lead singer of Sympathy, Horizon, Backyard and.... GEO. According to his extremely comprehensive website "Older than 40? Good chance you have seen Geo live at many of his concerts in the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. Geo Dijkhuis - or simply GEO - has been performing live gigs around the Netherlands for decades. Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice | Last Guy at the Disco | Total Reality | Dougal Shaw | 2024 | On their third LP Total Reality - a title ripped from the classic sci-fi novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ - Dr Sure's Unusual Practice tackle lofty issues through a hopeful lense, avoiding the often cynical pastiche of modern punk music. Total Reality touches on varied influences - proto-punk to post-punk, new wave to no wave, krautrock to trip-hop - to concieve something fresh and inspired. Shaw refers to Total Reality as a ‘collage album’. There are pieces of pandemic-era demo’s; drum machines coexisting with a live-tracked rhythm section; fresh collaborations; layers of guitars, synths, horns and percussion; collected field recordings and samples - all cut and glued in Shaw’s home studio to realise an expansive and colourful record. | * | 1:33:51 (Pop-up) |
Fontaines D.C. | Starbuster | Starburster Single | XL Records | 2024 | Fontaines D.C. have signed to XL for a new album, Romance, set for release on August 23. In a press release, guitarist Conor Deegan said of the album title, “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as Dogrel. The second album is about that detachment, and the third is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about...I’m fascinated by that—falling in love at the end of the world,” he says. “The album is about protecting that tiny flame. The bigger Armageddon looms, the more precious it becomes.” | * | 1:37:23 (Pop-up) |
Belle & Sebastian | What Happened To You, Son? | What Happened To You, Son? [Single] | Matador | 2024 | Released April 16, 2024. "Belle & Sebastian share new single ‘What Happened To You, Son?’ ahead of their North American tour. //// The jangle-pop track features a retro-sounding guitar riff, a thumping bass line and crisp keys. “Son, you’re a mystery / all your precious words don’t mean so much to me” sings frontman Stuart Murdoch during the opening of the song. The track was originally meant to be on the band’s 2023 LP ‘Late Developers’ but was pulled last minute. //// Speaking of the track in a press release, Murdoch shared: “‘What Happened to You, Son?’ got pulled rather randomly from the last LP because the LP felt one track too long. Out it came. //// “The song is about my youth, and the funny hole I fell into in my late teens. I was failing at my university course, failing in almost everything I tried around then. I was obsessed with the music of the time, I used to hang so much on the lyrics and message and feeling of certain bands of the 80s era – it probably wasn’t healthy.”" | 1:41:10 (Pop-up)
Ian Dury & The Blockheads | You'll See Glimpses | Sueperman's Big Sister 7" | Stiff Records | 1980 | As national treasures go, Ian Dury was one of the unlikeliest. A cantankerous cripple with a penchant for pills and puns, he was a living breathing saucy seaside postcard, a master of the double or even triple entendre; a Cockney caricature with cleverly constructed couplets coming out of his Aris. A forgotten gem is Sueperman’s oh-so-poignant B-side You’ll See Glimpses, with Dury singing from the heart: “All I want for my birthday is another birthday.” Which is just devastating. For all his comedic wordplay and foul-mouthed banter when Dury opened his heart, he could bring tears to your eyes. | 1:44:45 (Pop-up)
