Sucks To Be You Nigel  Introlag   Favoriting Tina Blom  Spectral Assault  2021  “The name is kind of just, nonsense,” say’s Krummi Uggason, one of the founders of the grassroots punk band, It sucks to be you, Nigel. Who the hell is Nigel? Are you talking about Nigel Farage? “A lot of people have asked us about that,” Krummi answers and his bandmates chuckle. “Me and Vigfús [Þór Eiríksson] were driving, and this was a running joke, like saying, it sucks to be….whatever. All of a sudden, we saw this number plate, and the name appeared to us in traffic: It sucks to be you, Nigel.” They are from Rekyvik and I am delighted by them.    0:00:00 (Pop-up)

The Jimi Ben Band  Royal Baboon   Favoriting Royal Baboon Single  Damaged Goods  2012  Sometimes, you discover a band that was a decade ahead of its time one decade too late. So it all worked out in the end. The Jimi Ben Band were from France. Mainly influenced by American Garage bands, 60’s British Beat groups, Surf Music, Punk Rock and New Wave, these slackers like it rather cheesy, danceable and fun. The Jimi Ben Band started as a lo-fi garage trio. They performed about 40 shows in France and Belgium and developed a degenerate style based on energy, coconut vocals and great amounts of reverb. They have made it quite clear that they wanted nothing but having girls dancing at gigs. This single came out on Damaged Goods and then...poof    0:06:07 (Pop-up)

Yard Act  Dream Job   Favoriting Dream Job single  Universal Records  2023  James Smith, lead vocalist: [“Dream Job”] feels like an apt introduction to the themes explored on Where’s My Utopia? — though not all encompassing. In part, I was scrutinizing and mocking myself for being a moaning ungrateful little brat, whilst also trying to address how the music industry is this rather uncontrollable beast that hurtles forward unthinkingly and every single person involved in it plays their part. Myself included, obviously. As with pretty much everything else going through my head last year, trying to find the right time to articulate the complexity of emotions I was feeling and the severity to which I was feeling them couldn’t be found — or accommodated, so instead I tried to capture it in a pop song that lasts less than three minutes once the fog had cleared a bit. It’s good and bad. I’m still glad that everything that happened to me happened."  *   0:12:08 (Pop-up)
Men & Health  Right On!   Favoriting Heroin On Reality TV EP  Men & Health  2021  The Spanish/Danish trio Men & Health, aka the best looking band on the face of the earth, spit their hatred, ridicule and contempt upon us. Armed with cheap drum machines, stoopid lyrics and scrappy-sounding guitars, this is the kind of stuff aimed at anyone who ever got sexually aroused by Johan Kugelberg's Top 100 DIY Singles list. Some might say "shitty music for shitty people."    0:14:58 (Pop-up)
Neon Kittens  Assets   Favoriting Side 3  Metal Postcard Records  2023  Released in April 2023, this album is a late year entry for favourite record of the year. With titles like "No Sex No Drugs or Rock and Roll" and "I Dreamt of Being a Teenage Stripper" how could you not? Hailing from Leeds UK, NEON KITTENS are the new cats on the block, with their name taken from a missheard 'Ultravox!' lyric and songs that are inspired by their collective love of No Wave, PiL, On-U Sound and ZE Records.    0:16:34 (Pop-up)

Chrome, Mel Collins  Repo Man   Favoriting Blue Exposure  Cleopatra Records  2023  Advance digital single (Oct 19) from forthcoming Nov 17 full-length. "Rock music has always had its mainstream acts, bands that following a relatively rigid formula crafted for maximum appeal. And rock music has always had its pioneers, bands that pushed the envelope beyond formula, charting new paths and driving rock to the next stage of its evolution. British prog band King Crimson are one such pioneer, and San Francisco noise rock group Chrome are another. Today, for the first time ever, these two forces are coming together on a brand new single, “Repo Man,” the first song to be released from Chrome’s incredible new album Blue Exposure. //// “Repo Man” kicks off with a fuzzed out groove accented with wah-wah peddle magic, thundering drums and a sinister vocal from Chrome mastermind Helios Creed. And then there’s the saxophone from King Crimson’s Mel Collins, which sounds like a demented, wailing spirit coming in and out of the mix. The track as a whole is a heart-stopping, cacophonous symphony of electronic mayhem, distorted frenzy and sheer audacious artistry. //// Blue Exposure marks the return of Chrome to the more accessible, song-oriented music that picks up where their brilliant 1980 album Red Exposure left off. For the album, Creed is joined by renowned multi-instrumentalist/producer Fernando Perdomo who worked to craft the most riveting Chrome album in decades! Watch for the release of Blue Exposure on CD and digital this November 17 with the vinyl version coming one month later!" Chrome (Bandcamp)  *   0:32:02 (Pop-up)
Trevor Horn, Iggy Pop, Phoebe Lunny  Personal Jesus   Favoriting Echoes – Ancient & Modern  Deutsche Grammophon  2023  (From Stereogum) "It seems impossible that Iggy Pop hasn’t already covered “Personal Jesus.” It’s too obvious of a fit. But no, I guess this new collaboration with Trevor Horn marks the first time the former Stooge has sung Depeche Mode’s goth-rockabilly classic, joining an extensive list headlined by the late, great Johnny Cash. Iggy applies his feral-debonair croon to the Violator hit for Horn’s new star-studded covers album Echoes – Ancient & Modern, which features new takes on 11 of Horn’s favorite songs from 1982 to 2012. The project also gave us Seal singing Joe Jackson and Marc Almond taking on Pat Benatar, and eventually we’ll hear Tori Amos’ spin on Kendrick Lamar. //// Horn shared a statement on working with Iggy: He said: “I’ve heard the track, I’m going to do three takes where I gradually get crazier and crazier and then a fourth take where I speak it and that will be it. You don’t mind if I run my own session?” I said, “No, go ahead,” and that’s exactly what he did. It’s Iggy, after all. Iggy adds another truth to whatever he does. We didn’t let the Johnny Cash version enter our thinking. We came to it as though there was only the Depeche Mode universe and here’s Iggy swinging it his way on some deviant variety TV show he happens to host." Echoes – Ancient & Modern is out 12/1 on Deutsche Grammophon.  *   0:35:37 (Pop-up)
Tropical Fuck Storm & Amy Taylor  This Perfect Day   Favoriting Suburbiopia / This Perfect Day  Joyful Noise Recordings  2020  In April 2020 Tropical Fuck Storm shared a cover of The Saints’ 1977 track, ‘This Perfect Day’, featuring Amy Taylor of Amyl and The Sniffers and Sean Powell of Surfbort. "The cover features as the B side of the 7″ single release of ‘Suburbiopia’. Powell and Taylor recorded with the band while drummer Lauren Hammell was stuck in NSW during Australia’s unprecedented bushfires. // “Sean jumped on drums and Amy grabbed a mic and we banged out our fave Saints tune for fun. Amy named the band Sniff Surf Storm!” guitarist-vocalist Gareth Liddiard said in a press release. // When NME Australia premiered ‘Suburbiopia’, Liddiard said Taylor played synthesiser on the song because “she can do anything”. // “[Amy] and Sean just picked some synths up and started tooling around while we were all nutting out the words. Our studio is in our lounge room so you can just mess around with whatever,” he explained. // “We all met through the King Gizz[ard and the Lizard Wizard] guys and have hung out all over the world ever since ’cause our touring schedules always seem to intersect.” // TFS included covers on the B side of most of the singles released from their first two studio albums, ‘Braindrops’ and ‘A Laughing Death In Meatspace’. These included an unlikely cover of The BeeGees’ ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and Lost Animal’s ‘Lose The Baby’."    0:39:05 (Pop-up)

It was released on 27 October 2023 through BMG and Tape Modern. A Halloween-themed album, the record includes three new tracks, covers and reimagined versions of older Duran Duran material. Former guitarists Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo appear, making their first appearances on a Duran Duran LP since 2004's Astronaut and 2000's Pop Trash, respectively. Nile Rodgers and Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin also feature as guest artists. //////// Inspiration for the concept album came from a Halloween show the band played in Las Vegas on 31 October 2022. As a result, singer Simon Le Bon stated that the record is "about a crazy Halloween party" and "supposed to be fun". Keyboardist Nick Rhodes revealed that the project "metamorphosed through a pure, organic process" and was made faster than anything they had done ever since their debut album. He also explained that the result is something they could not predict, citing the band's core elements—"emotion, mood, style and attitude"—as the essence of the album. It was summarised as "the soundtrack to their ultimate Halloween party". Founding member and bass player John Taylor added that the album "offers an interesting insight into the personality of the band" with music that "packs a real punch". //////// While Danse Macabre had already been available for preorder in mid-August 2023, it was not officially announced until 30 August. The lead single of the same name was released the same day. According to Rhodes the song was intended to celebrate "the joy and madness of Halloween". Produced by the band, Josh Blair and Mr Hudson, the set of songs includes covers of Billie Eilish, the Rolling Stones, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Talking Heads, and remakes of three older Duran Duran songs: 1981's "Night Boat", 1983's "Secret Oktober" (as "Secret Oktober 31st") and 1993's "Love Voodoo" renamed "Love Voudou". It also features "Super Lonely Freak", a stylistic merge of the band's own "Lonely In Your Nightmare" (1982) and "Super Freak" by Rick James."  *   0:43:57 (Pop-up)

Dynasty  My Information   Favoriting Dynasty  Tigebeat6  2005  Dynasty was a 3 piece band who were particularly active in the Electroclash scene in the early 2000's. "The name originally came from a goofy reference—it was just a placeholder. We thought we would change it eventually, but by the time our first show happened we couldn’t think of anything else that really worked. It also efficiently conveyed our trans, queer identities. It grew into being a great metaphor through which we could articulate the pseudo-robotic and program-based reality we try to address in a lot of our lyrics. In that sense it did evolve over time. Expressing our weirdo, manic, put-on-but-quickly-cracking aesthetic in the Fit Bits was a very natural thing. Gummy Stumps  Cameo   Favoriting Halt Bar Hijack Compilation  Various Artist  2020  In an age where we're constantly told that the good ideas are already taken, out pops a band with a moniker that's not only fun to say but also conjures up the kind of brutal, blackly humorous imagery that’s buried in the dark recesses of your mind. All of that, before you’ve even heard a note; which brings us to the next great point about Glasgow trio, Gummy Stumps. Linking together brazen, spoken-word vocals – led by vocalist Colin Stewart's Beefheartian howl – with clattering percussion and a three string guitar that revels as much in fuzz as it does melody, Gummy Stumps create a collective sound that manages to circumnavigate musical conventionality. As you might imagine, it's not always an easy listen, but therein lies the beauty of their fervent bursts of entrancing noise.    1:12:59 (Pop-up)
Warum Joe  Salt   Favoriting Toccare La Verita  Warum Joe  1984  Warum Joe was part of the French punk movement of the early 1980s characterized by groups such as Métal Urbain, Ludwig von 88 and Bérurier Noir. The group's musical style is a mixture of derision and very visual clichés with lyrics in French and punk rock with a predominance of the drum machine which gives the group a typical rhythmic basis. Warum Joe’s “ trademark ” is minimalist, choppy rock. The saturated guitars, the synth sounds, are inspired by the first album of the group Devo , Wire or Joy Division , the "metallic" drum machine recalls Cabaret Voltaire and the chanted singing and the voice of the singer Pascal Sabotier contribute to their particular style. The Warum Joe are the children of punk, influenced by great groups of the original punk wave like the Ramones , the Damned or the Buzzcocks from which they occasionally cover titles but always in a very personal way by adapting them in French and in appropriating them musically in order to make them a personal creation. They are still active in the 2020's a feat many other underground post punk bands cannot lay claim to.    1:16:19 (Pop-up)
Painted Fruits  Contradictor   Favoriting II  Painted Fruits  2017  A Canadian band hailing from Victoria, British Columbia. They have not apparently been active since this release, and it's a pity. I think it’s really powerful when somebody can write an instrumental that conveys what they’re trying to say.”Like many other bands, Painted Fruit grapples with the difficulty of keeping a common musical theme within the band. Tastes vary between members, which can impose a strain on the course of the band. That being said, the members of Painted Fruit have channeled their darker, post-punk preferences into a separate band, Novel...yes, that Novel!    1:19:07 (Pop-up)

Of the seven members of the band, two of them (Coco Ngabali and Theo Nzonza) were among the founding members of Staff Benda Bilili" //// From AllMusic: "Congolese group Mbongwana Star play boisterous, electrically charged music that draws from classic rumba and soukous rhythms, but takes them to the outer limits through distortion, heavy electronic grooves, and experimental production, incorporating influences such as acid rock, post-punk, and techno. The band's debut album, From Kinshasa, was released in 2015 to worldwide acclaim. //// Mbongwana Star formed in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 2013. The band was founded by Coco Ngambali and Théo Nzonza after both members had left Staff Benda Bilili, a group of paraplegic and homeless street musicians, following the cancellation of a European tour and accusations of mismanagement. Other players in Mbongwana Star include Dublin-born bassist and producer Liam Farrell, and additional Staff Benda Bilili contributors Cubain Kabeya and Randy Makana Kalambayi. Mbongwana Star's debut album, From Kinshasa, was released by World Circuit in 2015; it was originally intended to share its title with the opening track, "From Kinshasa to the Moon." A studio production through and through, the record incorporated mutated rhythms, psychedelic guitar soloing, and distorted field recordings of the Kinshasa cityscape. Konono No. 1, a long-running, widely influential Kinshasa-based collective, guested on one song. From Kinshasa was extremely well received, garnering rave reviews from numerous publications and appearing in many year-end lists. //// The group resurfaced in 2021, collaborating with African electronic duo Montparnasse Musique on a song called "Bitumba," from a self-titled EP that also included appearances by Konono No. 1 and Kasai Allstars."    1:35:49 (Pop-up)
Bill Callahan  Partition   Favoriting YTILAER [REALITY]  Drag City  2022  "Since ditching the Smog moniker 17 years ago to record under his own name, Bill Callahan has tweaked the elements of his fundamentally lo-fi sound to increasingly sophisticated and pleasing effect. The songs on REALITY juggle and contort folk-rock, grunge, and jazz elements through a basic lineup of acoustic nylon-string guitar and synthesizer, electric guitar, bass, and drums, with intermittent injections of piano, organ, contra-alto clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and backing vocals in arrangements that range from Pink Moon-ish and Harvest-like chamber-folk to thunderous climaxes worthy of God Speed! You Black Emperor. The heart of the music (and the aural center in an airy and kaleidoscopic mix) is Callahan’s deep baritone, at once conversational and melodic, foreboding and comforting. It gives emotional weight to lyrics that unfold at slow and shuffling paces, and hover between narrative and fractured poetry. His rhymes, repetitions, frequent references to dreams, strange images (“Meadowlark Lemon lies within,” “I felt so good, just like sudsy chrome”), and winking wordplay (“It’s a habit of force”) keep you puzzling over their meaning within Callahan’s ruminations on various aspects of the contemporary human and global condition."    1:42:02 (Pop-up)
Bonnie Trash  Out At Sea   Favoriting Malocchio  Hand Drawn Dracula  2022  Bonnie Trash is the drone-rock project of Canadian-Italian twin sisters Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor. Their 2022 debut album Malocchio unspools a real-life horror story based on the stories told to them by their Italian grandmother. Over heavy, hypnotic riffs, pounding drums and spooky soundscapes, the lyrics pull the listener into the meaning of the “evil eye,” a hex of malice onto another. Can you ever escape a curse? //////// Sonically, Malocchio connects the threads between metal, post-punk, shoegaze and drone rock, with Emmalia’s astounding guitar work recalling the likes of Black Sabbath, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine. Singer/drummer/lyricist Sarafina’s voice leaps out of the mix with a commanding presence, summoning the spirits of PJ Harvey or Siouxsie & the Banshees. ///////// That mix of musical influences alone would set Bonnie Trash apart, but the duo’s unique approach to their lyrical content really puts them in a school of their own. Inspired by communication theory, social commentary, horror, and ancestral folklore, the sisters approach their songwriting as a conceptual research project into their own family heritage. As second-generation Italian-Canadians, the Bortolon-Vettors became fascinated by the stories told by their Nonna and the connections between Treviso in Northern Italy and their hometown of Guelph, Ontario. //////// The album begins with the voice of Nonna Maria, their 93-year-old maternal grandmother whose life story inspired the creation of Malocchio. The crackly recording of an interview with Maria, accompanied by an apocalyptic drone, sets the tone of doom to come. After emigrating to Canada in the late ‘50s and starting a family, Maria must move back to Italy after the death of her father-in-law. Maria’s family is cursed and haunted by the early deaths of those who purportedly received the evil eye long ago. Maria experiences life-threatening omens and supernatural experiences, signifying a need to return to Canada before the curse takes her family. //////// This chilling work builds on the reputation for thought-provoking horror-rock established with their 2017 debut EP, Ezzelini’s Dead. That six-song collection was based on the myth of Ezzelino III da Romano, a cruel medieval tyrant from their family’s hometown, San Zenone degli Ezzelini — who was reputedly a cannibal. Toronto Star critic Ben Rayner was enthralled by the EP’s “primal, squalling art-punk” in a review in his “Your Favourite Thing” column, noting the music “quickens the pulse and evokes a fitting amount of dread.” //////// Though Malocchio may be Bonnie Trash’s debut full-length, the band has been around for the better part of a decade. The twins began playing music together at age 11, forming an all-female punk band in high school and a more eclectic indie group during their college years. But what became Bonnie Trash began to coalesce around 2013, when they moved back home to Guelph after spending time in the larger cities of Toronto and Montreal. A progressive college town with a vibrant DIY music scene, Guelph is also home to a tight-knit Italian-Canadian community and the name “Guelph” also has an Italian origin. //////// Spending more time with their Nonna Maria, they began digging into the ghost stories they heard as children, becoming more fascinated with the folklore, the superstitions, and the unique Veneto dialect she spoke — a dialect the sisters recognized was also dying out. Suddenly, the act of songwriting had also become an act of cultural preservation. And some of these stories were hair-raisingly scary. Discovering this heavier subject matter coincided with a shared desire to play heavier music. //////// Malocchio was co-produced by the band and Josh Korody (Vallens, Fucked Up, Nailbiter, Breeze, Beliefs) at his studio, Candle Recording in Toronto. COVID slowed down the planned recording schedule, but the additional time gave the duo a chance to strip down the sound to its fundamentals and dig deeper into their “apocalyptic emotional doom” aesthetic, as Korody pegged it. In the fall of 2020, Korody sent three mixes to his label boss, James Mejia, which piqued his interest, and with Malocchio, Bonnie Trash joins the roster of esteemed Canadian indie label, Hand Drawn Dracula."
