"T.V.O.D." was the only single by Miller's musical project the Normal, and the very first release on his Mute Records label. "Warm Leatherette" was released as the B-side; however, since it was "Warm Leatherette" that gained more public attention, it was featured as the lead song on subsequent single re-releases. Although Miller did not expect the single to be successful, it sold 30,000 copies.    0:03:23 (Pop-up)
AUS!Funkt  Can You Make It Alright?   Favoriting Can You Make It Alright?  Disco DEVIL  2023  Released Nov 15, 2023 -- Toronto-based art-disco/post punk/electro/death disco quartet AUS!Funkt have a new EP ‘Can You Make It Alright?‘, featuring 2 new austere-disco/post-punk-infused tracks. "Rejecting the lyrical and musical excesses of rock music, AUS!Funkt combines the groove of electronic music with the subversive aggression of post-punk. The lyrics, spoken and sung, provoke the mind with their realism and repetition. //// Electronic beats seduce the body into movement, freeing it from its torpor. On top, the guitar spurts out clouds of noise, while the bass supplies the melody. AUS!Funkt assaults the senses and uneases the mind while you dance to its unsettling disco beats. //// Speaking about the band’s name, they shared:“aus!Funkt aka “austere funktion” refers to a function or role that is characterized by simplicity, strictness, or a lack of ornamentation. “Austere” means plain, simple, or severe in appearance or manner, while “function” refers to a purpose or role. Therefore, an “austere funktion” describes a task or role that is straightforward, minimalistic, and focused on its essential purpose without unnecessary embellishments or frills. Careful examination of the limited use of notes confirms the diagnosis of the syndrome of ‘post-notes’ austerity.”" AUS!Funkt (Bandcamp)  *   0:06:12 (Pop-up)
Welt Star  Ich Hasse Blumen   Favoriting Ich Hasse Blumen  Refry Records  2022  The title translates to "I Hate Flowers". Excellent. This is an L.A.-German post-punk trio. Robert Pawliczek - Guitar/vocals // Bill Gray - Bass // Vinny Earley - Drums/synth. Excellent. More... "Here is an international collaboration featuring the brains behind DIODE, BOBBY WOULD, and VAGUESS. Needless to say, I was thrilled to dive into this German (by way of L.A.) punk that is moody and fun all at once. The drums absolutely bop, there’s a tasteful amount of synth, and the guitar and bass interlock like some kind of all-angles double helix in a way that hits from the heart and not the head—this isn’t some erudite post-punk, but something much more populist and propulsive. It’s a total blast to hear these musical minds intersect, and though by all reports it could be a while until we hear more from this project (if ever again), I will be anxiously waiting. “Cool” feels like a meaningless word these days, but if anything is cool, it’s this." It is the band's first album since the 2011 death of their bassist, Gerard Smith. //// Seeds was recorded in Los Angeles, at guitarist Dave Sitek's Federal Prism home studio. Sitek also produced the record. Lead singer Tunde Adebimpe explained, "It was nice to be somewhere where you're not exactly on the clock and worried about how much everything is costing you. It was pretty much the same situation as when we started making music." //// "The band announced the album on July 29, 2014. Adebimpe stated in a press release: We've been through a lot of stuff in the past few years that could have stopped the band cold, but I'm glad we got it together and took stock of the unique connection we have between each other because the record is, 1,000 percent, without a doubt, the best thing we've ever done."    0:17:56 (Pop-up)

Lo Noom  I Have No Idea What I'm Doing   Favoriting I Have No Idea What I'm Doing Single  Lo Noom  2023  With this single freshly out at the end of October, Lo Noom hail from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This is a solo bedroom project courtesy of Andrew Newman. He wears big glasses. He looks a bit like Morrissey and Philip Seymour Hoffman. He looks serious. He has been playing guitar since grade 3 and has been releasing music since 2015. His influences are many from Tame Impala to the Supremes "the Supremes. Every song that they ever made was perfect. It’s like they covered every relatable topic on the subject of love. And I’m not sure if it is because my parents played them all the time while I was growing up, but every time I hear them I miss my family, and I feel really happy and nostalgic."  *   0:32:43 (Pop-up)
Meatbodies  Disorder   Favoriting Meatbodies  In The Red  2014  Meatbodies is an American psychedelic rock band, formed in 2011 in Los Angeles, California by Chad Ubovich. He has also played with Fuzz and Ty Segall. This album was well reviewed, with PF writing "Pro wrestling heels use the term "B+ player" about guys in Ubovich's position—rookies who put on a good show but aren't quite headliners. But he rips, you see. He's always been a destroyer, and on Meatbodies, he also proves to be an ace rock'n'roll strategist. The tone here is set perfectly: 59 seconds of psychedelic sci-fi noise, and then, very suddenly, Ubovich and Segall come in at full power, electric guitars unrelenting, with "Disorder". It's a loud, exciting, kinetic, and brazen introduction"    0:34:30 (Pop-up)
XYZ  Don't Tread On Me   Favoriting Artificial Flavouring  Mono-Tone Records  2018  XYZ is the trans-Atlantic collaboration between American Ian Svenonius and Frenchman Memphis Electronic. You might recognize Mr. Svenonius’ effort to free Arthur Lee with his former group, the Make-Up, or his more recent work with Chain & the Gang or Escape-ism, the same way you might recall Mr. Electronic’s time with NON!, the Dum Dum Boys or Die Idiots. The aforementioned duo mashed their respective talents together here to produce a twelve song platter that’s full of nervous, electro rockers. While lyrically the topics of the songs might seem like a bummer...this is a terrific record (thanks to the general awesomeness of its creators) and a fun listen.    0:36:59 (Pop-up)
The World  Punctuate   Favoriting Reddish  Lumpy Records  2019  No new music in a few years from this awesome band so let's just dig a bit deeper into Reddish. The World hail from Oakland and share members from a slew of other Bay Area bands such as The Rays, Naked Roommate, Blues Lawyer, and Andy Human & the Reptoids. They are influenced by X Ray Spex, Au Pairs, Delta 8, ESG, Lithics....basically the best of the best of post punk. So yeah, no wonder they are amazing!    0:39:24 (Pop-up)
Ros Serey Sothea  Old Pot Still Cooks Good Rice   Favoriting Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll OST  Dust To Digital  2015  I'm dedicating this amazing fuzzy banger to Derek on the (slightly belated) occasion of his birthday! We play tons of Cambodian psych, and Ros was one of the greats and referred to as "The Golden Voice of the Capital" Despite a relatively brief career she is credited with singing hundreds of songs. Sothea's older sister Ros Saboeut is widely credited with reuniting Cambodia's surviving musicians and bands in the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge era. Surviving musicians had initially contacted Ros Saboeut to inquire about Sothea's fate.Ros Saboeut sought to restore Cambodian music as a tribute to her sister, saying "I think she was bound by the legacy of her sister to help." Her efforts were widely credited with rebuilding the country's rock genre.    0:41:52 (Pop-up)
Orchestre Abass  Hakia Dunia   Favoriting De Bassari Togo  Analog Africa  2018  Led by the great Malam Issa Abass, Orchestre Abass are from a geographical area that Redjeb has dubbed “The Islamic Funk Belt.” Stretching from Northern Ghana to Northern Cameroon, the territory was studded with funk groups comprised of musicians from an Islamic background that forged a distinct ripple of West African rock. The rattling percussion section, wah wah guitar rhythms, and heavy-as-hell organs especially on songs such as “Haka Dunia,” forms a scintillating funk-rock workout.    0:45:16 (Pop-up)
Cumbia En Moog  Cumbia del Sal   Favoriting Cumbia del Sal  Cumbia en Moog  2020  If Bach can go Moog, so can cumbia! This surprisingly funky novelty tune has one of those break-beat intros that loop makers drool for. Weird synth noodles and chipmunk chorus vocals only add to the “what the?” factor (in a good way!). On the flipside, another updated Costeño classic, with crazy synth noodles, scratchy guitar looping and odd vocals. Hats off to Fruko and Fuentes for letting this experiment in Afro-modernization happen. Cumbia hails from Peru and Columbia...but every Hispanic country now has its own unique version....cumbia for everyone!    0:49:22 (Pop-up)

Chrono Trigger   Favoriting

Full Mental Jacket

Sulatron Records

2022

Founded in 1997 by Dave Schmidt (aka Sula Bassana, on Spacebass) with his Liquid Visions pals Hans-Peter Ringholz (Guitar) and Claus Bühler (Drums), Zone Six are one of the first bands of the NEO-Krautrock and Improrock movement. Always evolving.
The idea behind was to play long tranceful space- and acid-rock improvisations. Now, 26 years later, this project is still existing and has a new, dark and powerful album out. The basics were recorded within the first three days of March 2022, influenced/affected by the news of the just started Russian war on Ukraine.

Wire  Ex-Lion Tamer   Favoriting Pink Flag  EMI  1977  The song that gave the band name to the group that dedicated themselves to covering Wire's debut "Pink Flag" album in the 80's. Wire used to refuse to play their older songs, so they brought Ex Lion Tamers with them on a tour; either to appease or annoy their fans. Hard to say. Lyrics: "There's great danger (danger) For the loneliest ranger in town No silver bullets (bullets) Tonto's split the scene Next week will solve your problems But now Fish fingers all in a line The milk bottles stand empty Stay glued to your T.V. set (T.V.) There's great danger And most caped crusader of all No cloak of justice Robin's quit the scene Next week will solve your problems But now Fish fingers all in a line The milk bottles stand empty Stay glued to your T.V. set (T.V.) Alien Nose Job  Television Sets   Favoriting Suddenly Everything Is Twice As Loud  Anti Fade Records  2020  "You’d think Jake Robertson would already have his hands full playing in the likes of Ausmuteants, Leather Towel, School Damage, Drug Sweat et al. But no, evidently there’s always time for one more thoroughly wracked project, and Alien Nose Job’s focus is as kaleidoscopically scattershot as you’d expect from a man with such a short attention span. Just to confirm: yes, that’s a good thing. From the off, we glide through the Coneheads-style Devocore of Television Sets before romping through the jangling lo-fi pop of Weight of the World, which skips and mopes while making like The Clean setting light to their parents’ carpet with a magnifying glass. There’s also charmingly scruffy soul-pop, chugging sci-fi slop-punk, straight-up college rock balladry and much, much more. But these aren’t sketches or tossed-off genre exercises. They’re bona fide works of consummate skill that resonate sincerely and effortlessly. Essentially, each song sounds like a challenge to the one that follows, a cry of ‘step the fuck up’; Suddenly Everything is Twice as Loud is a treasure trove of mini-masterpieces. Rough as fuck mini-masterpieces, sure, recorded with a cheap drum machine and guitars that sound like rusty drills cutting through power cables, but mini-masterpieces nonetheless."    1:05:26 (Pop-up)
Kulululu  Tee Vee   Favoriting Kulululu  Dazzleships Records  2021  Kulululu are from Portland, Oregon. "By Cris Lankenau July 25, 2017 at 10:45 pm PDT Who: Ku (vocals, guitar), Lu (guitar, vocals), Lu (bass), Lu (drums), Lu (saxophone), Lu (trombone). //// For Fans Of: Man Man, Gogol Bordello, Captain Beefheart. //// Sounds Like: The house band for a Portland version of Yo Gabba Gabba. //// Seated at a booth in B-Side Tavern, Kulululu’s frontman is trying to decide on a backstory. He’s already decided that he and his bandmates will remain anonymous for any and all things Kulululu, so real names are out. Ditto day jobs, personal histories and anything outright sad. If you can recall the time before every aspect of local culture had been mocked so extensively that Portland became a social experiment in city-wide solipsism, you might start to see exactly where Kulululu is coming from. //// "There's definitely a time and place to stand and listen and be really serious," he says. "We take a different approach and just try to make people laugh, smile, move around." //// Here's what we know for certain: The members of Kulululu are trained musicians from different parts of the country who all relocated to Portland separately but for the drummer and frontman—known as Ku and Lu, respectively. The term "Kulululu" is used by the band in an interchangeable elasticity. It's a verb, a noun, a philosophy. If you ask them what it is they'll tell you it could be anything. You might have Kulululu and not even know it. You might be Kulululu right now. //// The conceptual details are really just an avenue for the musicians in the band to keep everything surrounding their music erratic, jovial and perpetually exciting. The humdrum details of life or promotion are only considered as forms to wrap a gleeful scream around. "Kulululu (Bandcamp)    1:07:34 (Pop-up)
FM Berlin  TV   Favoriting At Least You're Having Fun  FM Berlin (Self Released)  2017  A four-piece from Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. It doesn't seem like much happened outside this release, but it can be found on your streaming services when you're looking for songs about TV. I like the lead guitar in this.    1:08:48 (Pop-up)
Spiritual Cramp  Television   Favoriting Television  Deranged Records  2018  A group from San Francisco, named after a Christian Death song. They have a new album out, but this isn't from that. Of recent note, though "Today, this isn’t Michael Bingham. Between writing this album and its release, the 36-year-old moved from San Francisco to Silver Lake, Los Angeles; he got sober, after a gradual realization that he was addicted to drugs and alcohol; and when Spiritual Cramp was offered a contract with Blue Grape Music, the new label set up by former Roadrunner executives Dave Rath and Cees Wessels, he quit his day job in marketing in order to finally give his all to something. “I floundered around for a long time. I was too afraid to fully apply myself to anything,” Bingham says. “What I always said, the entire time I was living my life, was ‘I just wanna play music.’ But my actions were saying, ‘Well, I kinda wanna play music.’ Even Spiritual Cramp, for the first four years, we were a one-foot-in one-foot-out kinda band. And when [I] no longer [used] drugs and alcohol, I realized pretty quickly that the only person standing in my way was me, and I didn’t wanna be that person.”" Spiritual Cramp (Bandcamp)    1:11:50 (Pop-up)
Talking Heads  Television Man   Favoriting Little Creatures (Deluxe Version)  Warner Records  1985  "Little Creatures is the sixth studio album by U.S. rock band Talking Heads, released June 10, 1985, by Sire Records. The album examines themes of Americana and incorporates elements of country music, with many songs featuring steel guitar. It was voted album of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll, and is the band's best-selling studio album, with more than two million copies sold in the United States. The cover art was created by outsider artist Howard Finster, and was selected as album cover of the year by Rolling Stone." -- Personal aside: I put this song on a mixtape of "long songs" in High School. I was sick and a little melancholy and listened to it quite a few times & it was always a chore to get through it. I've always viewed this song as a bit of a chore, therefore. However, I've listened to it A LOT this week, and very much enjoyed it. For your pleasure, let's make it longer & play the remix next under-the-voice.    1:15:54 (Pop-up)

""Man or Astro-man?" is an American surf rock group that was formed in Auburn, Alabama in the early 1990s and came to prominence over the following decade. //// Primarily instrumental, "Man or Astro-man?" blended the surf rock style of the early 1960s, like that of Dick Dale and The Spotnicks with the new wave and punk rock sounds of the late 1970s and early 1980s. "Man or Astro-man?" was known for their anachronistic dedication to science fiction themes, audio samples, obscure electronic devices (such as theremins and tesla coils), and high-energy live performances. Their earlier albums like Is It ... Man or Astroman? and Destroy All Astromen! were known for their traditional surf rock instrumentation and sci-fi sound bite song introductions, whereas their later albums like EEVIAC... and A Spectrum of Infinite Scale were known for their use of synthesizers, printers (like the Apple ImageWriter II), and their more abstract, experimental sound. Their recordings were often peppered with sound bites from obscure science fiction films and TV shows. //// It is largely believed that the group took its name from the poster of the U.S. release of the Japanese film The Human Vapor, which includes the tagline "IS HE MAN OR ASTRO-MAN?", the line seemingly appropriated as the title of their first album, Is It ... Man or Astroman?."

TV Girl & Monster Rally  Average Guy (Blame)   Favoriting Average Guy (Blame) - Single  TV Girl & Monster Rally  2023  Just released last week, TV Girl has added vocals and a new arrangement to Monster Rally's track 'Blame' off of the Beyond the Sea LP. Monster Rally is the brainchild of Cleveland native Ted Feighan. Producing music that is sampled-based tropical pop, Monster Rally began with the goal of assembling a bunch of old records into a completely different beast. Feighan began crafting tracks from his collection of records, combining his interests in Hip-hop, Exotica, Tropicalia, and Soul. Monster Rally creates tracks that manage to maintain a surprisingly organic sound, as if they were recorded by a full band on analog tape. There is something inherently nostalgic about the sound. Also the artwork is amazing!  *   1:33:29 (Pop-up)

Portishead  Western Eyes   Favoriting Roseland NYC Live 25  Universal  2023  Sometimes a perfect record is ruined by remastering, however this release is actually...very welcome. It was released on 2 November 1998 by Go! Beat. Those who were lucky enough to see that show live marvelled at its brilliance in presenting what could be considered challenging live material so effortlessly and impactfully "i think the most important takeaway from Roseland is this - a good live performance is transformative. it feels like it means something - something that studio recordings just can't convey. for a live performance to be good, it has to evoke the latent feelings of your sound, your music, your identity...the energy, the passion, they make you feel like you're part of something bigger. something you can't get in the studio. for a moment, however long, a moment, you're there. watching. experiencing. living."    1:39:47 (Pop-up)
The Intelligence  The Limerance Whip   Favoriting Limerance Whip Single  Vapid Moonlighting Inc.  2023  The Intelligence is another band who are most intruiguing. How do you possibly follow a perfect Portishead performance in a playlist. With this song that sounds like the beautiful alien child of the artist that preceded it. The full album is due to drop in early 2024....The Intelligence’s brand of art-smarm surf has become a touchstone for with-it rock ’n’ roll of the era. Perhaps a surprising assertion, especially considering their primitive and personal origins, but one cemented by the dedication and continual reinvention fostered by main-brain Lars Aldric Finberg. (A Frames, Dipers, Unnatural Helpers) For all their longevity and prolificacy, The Intelligence is a restless, ever-evolving vehicle for Finberg, showcasing his presumably patented knack for sharp pop songwriting that rides waves from both the past and heretofore unknown. They are evolving constantly and I am entranced with this current sound...  *   1:43:55 (Pop-up)

The Parisian multi-instrumentalist is already back on BMM with his third soundtrack for Monia Chokri's new film, Simple Comme Sylvain. //// "Monia came to me for her previous film Babysitter, she had listened a lot to my 2nd album La Pantoufle during the writing process and she wanted me to compose the music for her second film. As we got on very well, she contacted me again for her 3rd film Simple Comme Sylvain.""

Otay:onii  Overlap   Favoriting Dream Hacker  bié  2023  Lane Shi Otayonii is a Chinese musician, sound designer, film composer and installation artist. Otayonii was born in Haining, China and she says she was a naughty child, but certain life events silenced her as she was growing up, changing her into a shy, quiet person. After moving to America at 16, she pursued music and fronted Dent and Elizabeth Colour Wheel. Dream Hacker is an astral projection journey in the overlapping space where reality collides with dreams, or a black mass of shattered truths fluttering and swirling high above the ground. Her noise/improv-based approach to songwriting has, for now, been altered to a more structured and infectious ballad-oriented narrative, constantly enhanced by her stark vocal experimentation. As this dream odyssey winds on, she effortlessly switches between angelic healing tones and dreadful ritual howls, using her ample vocal textures to dictate the up and downs, cruelness and dreaminess in the lush tribal-percussion-led electronic orchestration. "My task is to solve a puzzle with another puzzle that can't be seen, be touched, but to feel." Hands down, one of the most beautiful songs we've ever played on this show.    1:54:49 (Pop-up)
