CHERRY CHEEKS  Moral Succubus   Favoriting CCIILP  Total Punk Records  2023  From Orlando, Florida. "Cherry Cheeks are back with the follow up to their highly praised debut LP. Now a full band based out of Portland, OR with a few successful tours under their belt and a strongly defined sound CCLPII picks up where last year's CHERRY RADIO EP left off. The songs are more fleshed out, the production crisper, and the hooks are gigantic with layers of synths and electronic bleeps and blurps peppered throughout. The manic energy is still front and center but the poppier elements hinted at with songs like 'Go Outside' and'Two Bugs' on their debut are given much greater focus on the album's hit heavy A-side. On the flip the album takes a darker and more sinister turn. The synths are more heavily featured the vocals have more bite and the punk muscle fully flexed. Cherry Cheeks prove they've got some staying power and I'm excited to see what they have in store for CCLPIII. Catchy, razor sharp, and 100% TOTAL PUNK" Cherry Cheeks (Bandcamp)

Marie Moor is a vocalist best known for her contributions to minimal synth and avant garde productions and collaborations. Water From Your Eyes  Crushed Barley   Favoriting Crushed Barley  Matador Records  2023  New remix album out Nov 17... Water From Your Eyes have announced a full-album rework of their 2023 album, Everyone’s Crushed. The new release, Crushed by Everyone, is out November 17, via Matador, and it features contributions from Nourished by Time, the Dare, the Cradle, and more. [On Oct 24], the group shared four excerpts from the collection, including Mandy, Indiana’s new version of “Remember Not My Name,” Sword II’s update of “Open,” and Fantasy of a Broken Heart’s take on “Buy My Product.” Water From Your Eyes have also offered a nu-metal rework of album highlight “Barley.”  *
Upchuck  Freaky   Favoriting Freaky Single  Famous Class  2023  On stage, Upchuck’s performances are in-your-face and unrelenting, but in conversation, the band is a centered, charged circle of grounded connection. Their origins lay in their experimental DIY days in their hometown Atlanta, skateboarding, rolling silverware, and smoking cigarettes at college parties. Together, they’re a kinetic force of youth and enthusiasm, churning out brutally honest, boisterous tracks that blur the lines between psych rock, punk, and hardcore. Vocalist KT emphasized the personal process of understanding herself and others by maintaining empathy, while simultaneously setting boundaries to avoid draining forces in society. She offered the following advice, “Once you understand yourself, you can understand others. Depending on who you are, empathize, sympathize. It's just that easy.”
Spit Kink  Yes To Everything   Favoriting Yes To Everything  John Toohill  2020  Spit Kink hail from Buffalo, NY. LAURA LOOGIE + KID SPITHOLOMEAUX present synth punk that is also very dumb dance music. Described as "a new wave kid’s first attempt at singing PRINCE songs." YTE is a sexy slice of synth punk. I like this band very much.
Beige Banquet  Animals   Favoriting Animals Single  Just Step Sideways  2023  Released just four days ago, this is a triumphant return for Beige Banquet. Produced by Beige Banquet with the help of engineer Matt Green (Sniffany & The Nits, Artefact, Joanna Gruesome) at Head Cold Studios, and mixed/mastered by David Forcier (Civic), ‘Animals’ captures the band in a professional studio environment, moving away from the lofi bedroom recordings of previous releases. The studio provided a perfect environment for the band to develop compositionally and explore a more textural approach. Combining layers of noise and bursts of saturated percussion with a driving rhythm section, ‘Animals’ offers a glimpse of the deeper and more dynamic sound of their future releases and captures the raw intensity of the Beige Banquet live show for the first time.  *
Future Punx  Pre-Wave   Favoriting This is Post-Wave  Dull Tools  2015  Future Punx hail from Brooklyn NY. Since their formation in 2013, New York's Future Punx have earned a reputation as one of the city's most explosively exciting bands. Fungas  Time Poor   Favoriting Locate 0  New Brain Communications  2022  Fungas are from Newcastle Australia and definitely have that Egg Punk sound...they describe themselves as "deep elements of psych, punk, and garage, consistently diversifying tone to all those that choose to engage in their psychedelic sound-bath. Fungas's energetic live shows continue to encapsulate their new art madness with constant rhythmic changes stylised with experimental sounds of mellotron, trip percussion and lots of delay."
Sleaford Mods  My 18 Hour Girdie   Favoriting More UK Grim  Rough Trade  2023  Released on Oct 20th, this tune is a banger! The new EP was written and recorded during the same time that the duo – comprised of Andrew Fearn and Jason Williamson – worked on their latest album ‘UK Grim’, which was released back in March. It also arrives on the heels of their recent slot supporting Britpop legends Blur, where the band performed two back-to-back nights at Wembley Stadium. The EP sees the members continue their “current dancefloor dominance, but with a mix of insight and wit, outrage and compassion”. It also sees them shed light on the current climate, as they look to both “critique and celebrate our turbulent times” with their tracks.  *

Basil Kirchin (8 August 1927 – 18 June 2005) was an English drummer and composer. His career spanned from playing drums in his father's big band at the age of 13, through scoring films, to electronic music featuring tape manipulation of the sounds of birds, animals, insects and autistic children" Kirchin's music influenced many musicians after him including Brian Eno and David Byrne. Brian Eno states "Basil realised long before the rest of us did that sound could become a malleable material," "He was like a painter. That idea of music as painting was something that became very important to me." "When we [Eno and David Byrne] made My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, with the idea of using found voices as the centre of the piece rather than having them as an ornament, I’m sure the boldness and confidence I had for that partly came from Basil.”

Lol Tolhurst x Budgie x Jacknife Lee  Ghosted At Home (feat. Bobby Gillespie)   Favoriting Los Angeles  Play It Again Sam  2023  This full album releases tomorrow, Nov. 3. This is one of three collaborations with Primal Scream leader Bobby Gillespie. //// The project itself features "former drummers of two massively important bands, along with a big-name producer, will get together to release an album full of guests. Lol Tolhurst was the founding drummer of the Cure, and he was a key member of that band until 1989. Peter “Budgie” Clark wasn’t the original drummer of Siouxsie And The Banshes — he joined that band in 1979 — but he was with that band until they broke up in 1996. (He’s also Siouxsie Sioux’s ex-husband.) Tolhurst and Budgie have a post-punk podcast called Curious Creatures, and now they’ve also gotten together with U2/R.E.M. producer Jacknife Lee to make the new album Los Angeles." //// "The driving’ roiling “Ghosted At Home” makes use of Gillespie’s slithery presence, as he howls about a toxic relationship in words that only a British rock star could get away with: “She’s my addiction! Like crucifixion!” //// In a press release, Budgie says:In life, it is rare to hear someone telling their story and for us to recognize it as our own. It is rarer still when that story relates to a complex, dangerous, and psychologically damaging relationship. To induce this feeling of empathy is perhaps the gift and skill of a great lyricist and writer. Bobby Gillespie is one of those writers." //// [And a video accompanies the song...] Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee filmed the ominous “Ghosted At Home” video with director Julian Gabriel Bendaña on doorbell cameras. He is best known as the bassist of the rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees which he co-founded in 1976. He was also a member of the short-lived band the Glove. He took the name "Severin" from the Leopold von Sacher-Masoch character who is mentioned in the Velvet Underground song "Venus in Furs". Severin had earlier considered "Steve Spunker" for his stage name. After the split of Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1996, Severin created his own label RE: and released several instrumental albums via his official website. In the late 2000s and the early 2010s, he regularly performed live in solo, playing music over footage of silent films." https://stevenseverin.com

Oneida, the Brooklyn rock band whose most recent album Success came out via Joyful Noise last year, contributed a cover of Siouxsie And The Banshees’ “Halloween,” which features vocalist Katie Eastburn, aka KATIEE.  *
The Creatures  Mad Eyed Screamer   Favoriting Wild Things (2x7")  Polydor  1981  "Wild Things is the first release by British duo the Creatures (singer Siouxsie Sioux and drummer Budgie). It was issued on 25 September 1981 by Polydor Records as two 7" single records in a "double-album" style card cover, and is usually referred to as an EP. It peaked on the UK Singles Chart at No. 24, and the pair performed "Mad Eyed Screamer" on Top of the Pops. The EP was entirely remastered in 1997 and reissued as part of the 'A Bestiary Of' compilation. //////// History: The initial idea for Wild Things, and the Creatures, came about during the rehearsal sessions for the Siouxsie and the Banshees album Juju. While bassist Steven Severin and guitarist John McGeoch took a break, Siouxsie and drummer Budgie created the song "But Not Them". Deciding that it was complete as a drum-and-voice piece, they left it as it was, and recorded four more tracks to accompany it. The result was the Wild Things EP (so named by Severin, who upon hearing it, said it sounded like something the creatures in the book Where the Wild Things Are would have danced to on their island). The only cover version on the EP was the Troggs' "Wild Thing"; Siouxsie added extra angry lyrics to the original; "Wild thing, I think I hate you/but I wanna know for sure/so come on, hit me hard/I hate you". "So Unreal" drew inspiration from the novel The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin, and "Mad Eyed Screamer" from local characters met in Hyde Park, London. The duo incorporated the songs "But Not Them", "So Unreal" and "Thumb" into Banshees concerts for many years afterwards. //////// The erotic sleeve art featuring Siouxsie and Budgie half-naked under a shower was inspired by the pictures of Man Ray; the artwork caused some controversy. Another shoot, inspired by the John Millais painting Ophelia, featured the singer naked under many flowers and shallow water."
Duran Duran  Spellbound   Favoriting DANSE MACABRE  Tape Moderdn  2023  Feat. Andy Taylor on guitar & Anna Ross, Rachael O'Connor on Backing Vocals / Producer – Duran Duran, Joshua Blair //////// Written-By Siouxsie & The Banshees – John McGeoch, Peter Edward Clarke, Steven Severin, Susan Ballion ///// "Danse Macabre is the sixteenth studio album by the British band Duran Duran. It was released on 27 October 2023 through BMG and Tape Modern. A Halloween-themed album, the record includes three new tracks, covers and reimagined versions of older Duran Duran material. Former guitarists Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo appear, making their first appearances on a Duran Duran LP since 2004's Astronaut and 2000's Pop Trash, respectively. Nile Rodgers and Victoria De Angelis of Måneskin also feature as guest artists. //////// Inspiration for the concept album came from a Halloween show the band played in Las Vegas on 31 October 2022. As a result, singer Simon Le Bon stated that the record is "about a crazy Halloween party" and "supposed to be fun". Keyboardist Nick Rhodes revealed that the project "metamorphosed through a pure, organic process" and was made faster than anything they had done ever since their debut album. He also explained that the result is something they could not predict, citing the band's core elements—"emotion, mood, style and attitude"—as the essence of the album. It was summarised as "the soundtrack to their ultimate Halloween party". Founding member and bass player John Taylor added that the album "offers an interesting insight into the personality of the band" with music that "packs a real punch". //////// While Danse Macabre had already been available for preorder in mid-August 2023, it was not officially announced until 30 August. The lead single of the same name was released the same day. According to Rhodes the song was intended to celebrate "the joy and madness of Halloween". Produced by the band, Josh Blair and Mr Hudson, the set of songs includes covers of Billie Eilish, the Rolling Stones, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Talking Heads, and remakes of three older Duran Duran songs: 1981's "Night Boat", 1983's "Secret Oktober" (as "Secret Oktober 31st") and 1993's "Love Voodoo" renamed "Love Voudou". It also features "Super Lonely Freak", a stylistic merge of the band's own "Lonely In Your Nightmare" (1982) and "Super Freak" by Rick James."  *

Onyon  Yahtzee   Favoriting Last Days On Earth  Trouble In Mind  2023  Onyon have proven to be one of my favourite new bands! Last Days on Earth is the second full length in as many years from this musical collective hailing from Leipzig. ONYON brings shrouded-but-spiky, subtly goth-tinted post-punk à la early XMAL DEUTSCHLAND out of the Cold War and into the digital age. Vocals alternate between German and English, rarely deviating from a sternly deadpan shout, the beats are of the martial, unwaveringly hi-hat/snare-forward variety, and period-perfect ’80s keys help to scratch that waved-out Zickzack itch. More electro art please!!!!  *
The New Sound of Numbers  Invisible Magnetic   Favoriting Invisible Magnetic  Cloud Recordings  2013  Clearly a band that was ahead of its time, as this could have come out yesterday and I'd be thrilled. A bit Sweeping Promises, with some 80's sheen for good measure. This was their last album, with only one previous full length relesed in 2006. The New Sound of Numbers was an experimental post-punk band based in Athens, GA. Fronted by Hannah Jones on 12-string electric guitar and featured members of Pylon, The Olivia Tremor Control, and Bubbly Mommy Gun. AND THAT'S WHY THEY WERE SO GODDAMN GOOD.
Noseholes  Styling   Favoriting Danger Dance  Chu Chu Records  2019  Noseholes' debut LP Danger Dance takes the listener on a journey in a scruffy taxi unexpectedly cruising through dirty, muddy streets into a neighborhood where discotheques are sparsely improvised in shabby basements, sound tracking the journey with a disco-infused variety of post-punk and no wave. The album contains groove heavy hits such as "Styling", "Danger Dance", and "Lush Box" mixed with more experimental songs sung in alien tongues, a no wave grumble rap, and finally, a nerve-wrecking saxophone improvisation. All the tracks offer up a unique take on your grasp of dance music. "Noseholes are from Hamburg, but do sound straight from New York though" --Trust Mag. "The minimalism and musical approach of Noseholes reminds me of bands such as Bush Tetras, Contortions, Shopping and Nachthexen"...with a bit of Cristina inspired vocals for extra awesomeness.
El Señor  That's Right   Favoriting Affection To Belong  El Señor  2023  Released in April 2023, this record is absolutely fun and charming. They hail from Braga, Portugal and classify themselves with the following hashtags on bandcamp "Surf, Rock, gaivota rock, ie ie minhoto, garage" ....think a psychedelic garage rock group with the sensibilities of a hardcore band.
Freak Genes  Something Else   Favoriting Power Station  Feel It Records  2021  This song just chugs along so pleasantly. Freak Genes continue their descent into angular electronics with Power Station. Musicians are replaced by machines, natural sounds are swapped for noises. The result is synthetic pop for problem times. Charlie Murphy (Internal Credit / Isolation) and Andrew Anderson (Proto Idiot / KAKE?) orchestrate affairs, wrangling synths, drum machines, guitars and found sounds. Think 154-era Wire but with a reduced budget, or DAF minus the disco. Formed in 2016, Freak Genes previous albums are Playtime, Qwak Qwak and III. They’ve performed in both shitty and swanky venues across Europe.
Всадники ЖКХ (Riders of Housing and Residential Complexes)  Tradeskantsii   Favoriting Bureau Utopia - Remixes  Incompetence Records  2022  Originally Moscow-based record label Incompetence Records — now moved to Tel Aviv — created by the Interchain duo of Jenya Gorbunov (ГШ, Inturist) and Andrey Lee (Obgon), sees a new revival. Started in 2013 as a techno label with an individual approach to the conventional genre, Incompetence released first records of PTU, Obgon, Ewan Limb, Interchain, Dem Leedz — musicians, taking an active part in the development of the domestic electronic scene. Today Incompetence is not focused on club music anymore and expands its genre borders, but is still laying stress on an individual, conceptual approach. From now on the label will release music, growing from both the mass culture and academical, artistic environment. Every musician and every release creates its own genre, its own system of axis and principles. Incompetence treats its releases as artistic works of the musicians and musical projects of the artists, having no intention to serve existing genre institutions. The band name translates to (approximately) "Riders of Housing and Residential Complexes" This is a remix album of their 2022 release " Bureau Utopia"

Trouser Press wrote that "if you want to understand [Flipper's] creative mind, Gone Fishin’ is the ideal synthesis of sickness and health." To say I am having a Flipper moment is...an understatement. They are geniuses.
