The Glove | Perfect Murder | Blue Sunshine | Polydor | 1983 | Robert Smith and Steven Severin founded the Glove during a period when they were under heavy stress in their respective bands, the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The Glove, named after the Blue Glove in The Beatles tripped-out film Yellow Submarine, was originally going to have Smith on vocals, and Severin and Smith doing all of the instrumentation (since both of the Gentlemen were highly accomplished musicians upon their own merit). However, Smith’s contract for his duties in The Cure forbade him to sing on other releases (Which makes no sense since Robert sings two tracks on this album). Jeanette Landray takes on vocal duties for the rest. Blue Sunshine, named after an obscure horror film from the 60s, is a colorful record, to say the least. Many of the arrangements would by no means fit properly on the individual members’ full-time groups. | 0:05:30 (Pop-up)
The Gothic Archies | The World Is A Very Scary Place | The Tragic Treasury: Songs from a Series of Unfortunate Events | Nonesuch | 2006 | The Gothic Archies are an American indie rock/gothic rock band established by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields. The band later became more prominent when Merritt wrote, performed and recorded songs for the audiobook versions of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. A collection of thirteen songs based on each book and two additional tracks was released as The Tragic Treasury on October 10, 2006, to coincide with the release of the final book in the series. The Gothic Archies briefly toured to promote the album featuring Merritt on ukulele and Daniel Handler on accordion. | 0:09:50 (Pop-up)
Inflatable Boy Clams | Skeletons | Inflatable Boy Clams | Subterranean Records | 1981 | It's the return of the Inflatable Boy Clams! They are an Echo Beach favourite, and this tune is no exception. Wonky, weird and wonderful post punk from an all female group. More of a performance art troupe than a traditional rock band, the Boy Clams often rotated between instruments and shared vocal duties: JoJo Planteen, Judy Gittelsohn and Carol Detweiler (the latter two both members of Pink Section), along with saxophone player Genvieve Boutet de Monvel. Dead Kennedys | Halloween | Plastic Surgery Disasters | Alternative Tentacles | 1982 | Formed in 78, disbanded in 86 one of the influential bands in punk and one of our favourites on the beach! The album's cover features a withered starving African child's hand being held and dwarfed by a white man's hand, a picture that had won the World Press Photo award in 1980, taken in Karamoja district in Uganda by Mike Wells. The band's music had evolved considerably in a short time, moving away from hardcore formulae toward a more innovative jazz-informed style, featuring musicianship and dynamics far beyond other bands in the genre (thus effectively removing the music from that genre). By now the group had become a de facto political force, pitting itself against rising elements of American social and political life such as the religious right, Ronald Reagan and the idle rich. I once spent an afternoon with Jello Biafra. It was...interesting. | 0:24:34 (Pop-up)
Ramones | Chain Saw | Ramones | Sire | 1986 | Ramones is the debut studio album by the American punk band Ramones, released April 23rd 1976 by Sire Records. The album was recorded in January 1976 in seven days for $6400. Ramones peaked at number 111 on Billboard and though commercially unsuccessful, it received positive reviews from critics. It is widely regarded as being an early establisher of the genre of punk rock. In 2012 the album was preserved by the National Recording Registry, deeming it "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant." | 0:28:08 (Pop-up)

Unfinished Business | Haunted House (Bad Breed Mix) | Mix And Mash | Lizard Snake Records | 2014 | From the "Remixes And Mashups" side of the album (side B.) " The Toronto trio met and began the band in 2010 in their grade four/five split class (they were called Food Fight then) and have been steadily developing their sound since... [By] 14 and 15 years of age, the girls had a successful vinyl LP release under their belts, and have played NXNE showcases, record store shows and countless parties around the city. Mix and Mash, an eight-song debut vinyl release, features all original songs save one Negative Approach cover. In true punk rock fashion, the girls splice hilarious sound samples in between songs, including Ren & Stimpy and Arrested Development quotes." Produced by Chris Hegge and the Bad Breed. Samhain | Everyday is Halloween | Everyday is Halloween EP | 3055131 Records DK | 2022 | Released on Oct 4, 2022 (my brother's birthday.) This is a cover of the Ministry song. "Samhain is a pagan religious festival originating from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition. In modern times, Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “SAH-win”) is usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.” Celebrants believe that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain, allowing more interaction between humans and denizens of the Otherworld. Ancient Samhain Ancient Celts marked Samhain as the most significant of the four quarterly fire festivals, taking place at the midpoint between the fall equinox and the winter solstice. During this time of year, hearth fires in family homes were left to burn out while the harvest was gathered. After the harvest work was complete, celebrants joined with Druid priests to light a community fire using a wheel that would cause friction and spark flames. The wheel was considered a representation of the sun and used along with prayers. Cattle were sacrificed, and participants took a flame from the communal bonfire back to their home to relight the hearth. Early texts present Samhain as a mandatory celebration lasting three days and three nights where the community was required to show themselves to local kings or chieftains. Failure to participate was believed to result in punishment from the gods, usually illness or death. There was also a military aspect to Samhain in Ireland, with holiday thrones prepared for commanders of soldiers. Anyone who committed a crime or used their weapons during the celebration faced a death sentence. Some documents mention six days of drinking alcohol to excess, typically mead or beer, along with gluttonous feasts. Christian Samhain As Christianity gained a foothold in pagan communities, church leaders attempted to reframe Samhain as a Christian celebration. The first attempt was by Pope Boniface in the 5th century. He moved the celebration to May 13 and specified it as a day celebrating saints and martyrs. The fire festivals of October and November, however, did not end with this decree. In the 9th century, Pope Gregory moved the celebration back to the time of the fire festivals, but declared it All Saints’ Day, on November 1. All Souls’ Day would follow on November 2. Neither new holiday did away with the pagan aspects of the celebration. October 31 became known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween, and contained much of the traditional pagan practices before being adopted in 19th-century America through Irish immigrants bringing their traditions across the ocean. Trick-or-treating is said to have been derived from ancient Irish and Scottish practices in the nights leading up to Samhain. In Ireland, mumming was the practice of putting on costumes, going door-to-door and singing songs to the dead. Cakes were given as payment. Halloween pranks also have a tradition in Samhain, though in the ancient celebration, tricks were typically blamed on fairies." | * | 0:46:23 (Pop-up) |
The Fall | Scareball | Masquerade Single (Part 1) | Artful Records | 1998 | From The Annotated Fall: " Julia Nagle provides some vocals on this, and it's driven along by Karl Burns' high hat. The musical concision of a three-piece Fall (with Julia on guitar), and a remarkable measure of restaint from Hanley, makes this a pretty enjoyable three minutes. From "Gladys Winthrop"'s analysis on Reformation: Lyrically, MES is very cryptic on this one. His text is particularly fragmented, too. After some initial "Bah bah"s, which seem to hold no recognisable tune or have any other relevance to the song ("No different to any other Fall song!", I hear you cry), he encompasses rabbits, handkerchiefs, Chinese business practices and shrimps into his narrative. And no, I have no idea what he's going on about. Julia Nagle brought this song in from her previous band, What? Noise, although songwriting credits also go to Smith, Burns, and Hanley." One of the last songs to feature original drummer Karl Burns (who had many intermittent spells with the band in the years prior) & longest serving Fall member (other than Mark E Smith) bassist Stephen Hanley (1979-1998.) | 0:51:36 (Pop-up)
The Wolfmanhattan Project | Very Next Song | Summer Forever And Ever | In The Red Records | 2022 | This was released Oct 14. "Summer Forever and Ever succeeds Blue Gene Stew, 2019’s debut by the Wolfmanhattan Project, a collective unit co-starring two other musicians familiar to In the Red listeners: singer-guitarist Mick Collins, front man of the seminal Detroit-bred garage units The Dirtbombs and The Gories, and drummer-vocalist Bob Bert, whose skin work has distinguished albums by Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus, and Jon Spencer and the HITmakers. Powers says of the genesis of the Wolfmanhattan Project, “I met Mick at the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin. There was just a great vibe from him, and I admire him so much. I said, ‘We should do something together someday!’ Bob is a mutual friend of ours, and he actually pulled it together by saying, ‘Hey, let’s go in the studio.’ We had a rough concept of two baritone guitars and drums, with all of us singing. It ended up that I found a baritone guitar and no one else did, so I became the default ‘bass player.’” Bert recalls, “It’s unbelievable that the Wolfmanhattan Project has been together for 10 years at this point. I went to a show at the Brooklyn Bowl, and Kid and Mick did a song together. I have to give Larry Hardy the credit for almost curating the band, in a way. I heard they were thinking about recording, and I happened to be in L.A. hanging with Larry, and he got a call from Mick, and I said, ‘Oh, I wanna get in on that.’ I’ve known Mick and Kid for a really long time, so it all kind of fell together.” The group was founded as a studio project by three musicians who are kept busy by their primary bands. Blue Gene Stew was written and recorded quickly. Powers says, “I think that the new record was much more a group effort. I think there’s more of a group kind of sound, as eclectic as it is. I feel like we all played together, as opposed to playing on each other’s songs.” Bert notes that the band’s music is grounded in spontaneity: “Me and Mick went in and had a couple of rehearsals, and I would come up with a beat, he would come up with a riff. I still have a cassette Walkman, believe it or not, and we’d put it down on that. It wasn’t even a full song. We’d just put down a bunch of ideas. When it came to recording we’d lay down the basic tracks and work out different things, and a lot of it was made up on the spot. It really is a great collaboration.” Recorded and engineered by Mark C. of Live Skull at his studio, Summer Forever and Ever finds Powers playing piano and the Kaoss touch-pad effects unit and Collins playing synthesizer, in addition to their usual instruments. The album reflects the same eclectic mix of musical styles heard on the debut. References and sometimes even direct quotes from sources as diverse as the Andrea True Connection, Captain Beefheart, the Count Five, and Eurythmics leap out of the speakers. “My biggest influence is beatnik poetry,” says Powers. “Bob comes from the no wave scene. Mick is an incredible source of all kinds of very strange musical information. We all have library cards and we read. We listen to all kinds of things. Our thing is garage rock, and to be a good garage rocker you have to be informed by many other things, or else you’re just nostalgia. “It’s a great band,” he adds. “It’s fun, it’s playful, it’s kooky and arty and rock ’n’ roll. It contains all those parts of us. We all share in the lyrics and the vocals, so it’s very much a mind-meld and a group effort.”" HEY WFMU PALS, go to Todd-o-phonic Todd's playlist from October 15, 2022 to hear his interview with Kid Congo Powers WFMU Todd-o-phonic Todd: Oct 15, 2022: Some New Kind Of Kick with Kid Congo Powers | * | 0:54:38 (Pop-up) |

Landscape | Norman Bates | Norman Bates 7" | RCA | 1981 | Landscape is an English synth-pop band, best known for the 1981 hits "Einstein a Go-Go" and "Norman Bates". Formed in London in 1975, the band toured constantly during the mid-to-late-1970s, playing rock, punk and jazz venues and releasing two instrumental EPs on its own Event Horizon label. The group began experimenting with computer-programmed music and electronic drums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, making records in the emerging genre of synth-pop. They disbanded in 84, but this monotonous...yet somehow oddly catchy song remains! | 1:16:18 (Pop-up)
Duran Duran | Night Boat | Duran Duran | EMI | 1981 | The song was originally written by Simon Le Bon, when he was waiting for a ride from the night bus home. Simon Le Bon's lyric book which dates from the late 1970s to the early 1980s features "Night Boat". The video for "Nightboat" was directed by longtime music video director Russell Mulcahy. The video is a mini horror film shot on the Caribbean island side of Antigua. The band gather in a small beach village as the sun is setting, only to be separated and set upon one by one by zombies, until the ragged night boat arrives to carry Le Bon away. It is possible that the video is a homage to the Italian horror film Zombi 2, with settings and zombies that look very much like the ones in the film. The video was filmed in May 1982, several months before Michael Jackson began work on the video for his song Thriller, which also featured zombies. | 1:21:21 (Pop-up)
Japan | Halloween | Quiet Life | Hansa | 1979 | Quiet Life is the third studio album by English new wave band Japan, first released on 17 November 1979 in Canada by record label Hansa (it would be released in the UK some weeks later). The album was a transition from the glam rock-influenced style of previous albums to a synth-pop style. Though sales were initially slow, Quiet Life was the band's first album to chart and was later certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 100,000 copies. | 1:26:50 (Pop-up)

Nowaves | Beach Goth | Odd Secrets | Nowaves | 2021 | My favourite song of this show! Australian? German? We're not quite sure but this description works: So, yeah, it’s synthpop, but it’s a sort of pounding, thudding synthpop that’s capable of rattling your silverware drawer as well as Sonic Youth or any of those other weird bands they used to write about in Forced Exposure in the ’80s. It pairs well with black jellybeans and you can stomp empty cans to it. Check them out on Bandcamp. They are great! | 1:53:30 (Pop-up)

Jackson C Frank | Halloween Is Black As Night | Fixin' To Die | Jackson C Frank | 2016 | Life is the scariest thing of all, and Jackson C Frank led a life of tragedy. At the age of 11 he survived a boiler explosion and suffered burns over 50% of his body. He later developed schizophrenia and was in and out of mental health hospitals frequently during his life. He had a short marriage to the cousin of Edie Sedgewick, which failed after the death of his child. He ended up on homeless and living on the streets, at one point having his eye shot out by a random BB Gun attack. His musical career derailed by mental illness and physical ailments stemming from his childhood injury. He died in obscurity in 1999. | 2:03:32 (Pop-up) |
