My Abdullah Ibrahim story-I had seen A.I. quite a few times, decided I'd see him (he was at Sweet Basil's in NYC with his Ekaya band) on my 1st date with my wife. We talked a bit too long before the show (I maintain she was doing all the talking about her family, she denies this), and got the club just before it started. As the last to arrive, we wound up at a table right at the front-the stage at Sweet Basil's was inches from the front tables. We had Craig Harris' trombone slide over our heads for the whole set (I maintain she should have known what she was getting into then and there...)

With all the AI I have, I haven't heard this Bra Joe from Kilimanjaro album, it's very cool. You don't hear Ibrahim on electric piano often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
adamdoesit:

Hm, must've forgot to grease the maitre'd.

Speaking of 1987, Jay Kantor's novel "Krazy Kat", based on the comic, includes the lyric, "You got a Zippo lighter, you got the dollar brand / but if you can't light my cigarettes, you can't be my man." As a result, I've long assumed that the name Dollar Brand derived from Zippo lighters somehow, but my googling doesn't back it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
doctorjazz:

I always wondered about the Dollar Brand name myself.
Ibrahim's music is so rooted in the 3 chord music of his native South Africa, usually simple harmonically, but he gets such riches out of it.
Avatar 2:15pm
Stork:

adamdoesit: according to my "research" (lol), he used to buy jazz records off the GIs in Cape Town for a buck, and they gave him the name Dollar. Sounds plausible, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
adamdoesit:

Stork, plausible; and, where GI's went, Zippos went, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
doctorjazz:

The piano dropped out during the sax solo-it may be Ibrahim playing sax, which he does, along with flute, and, of course, piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
doctorjazz:

Never mind, piano is back behind the sax...
Avatar 2:17pm

doc - he lays out a lot during solos - that's him on electric piano.

If you count the rime on Zimbabwe (late now), he is playing a 9/8 (or some count of 9) ostinato as the anchor of the song. When he was younger, in concert he would have the band all lay out for him to play solo, and he'd launch some odd time ostinato in the left hand, play completely independently with the right, often quoting his themes from other tunes. He didn't do this the last time I saw him, just before the pandemic, I suspect it was a strenuous routint)

indeed, yum. there seems to be a Basil theme developing in my day... i chose a basil recipe when asked earlier (my better half will be making a farro recipe for her father's bday with basil being a key (and selling, to me) ingredient). to Basil and to basil

Hey, are you all aware, viz a viz the Crane Guy: while I was in the US... HE DID IT AGAIN!! SAME CRANE!! BEHIND MY FECKIN HOUSE!!! AND THIS TIME HE STAYED ALOFT FOR 21 DAYS - IN A HEAT WAVE!!! The first squat was for like 8-9 days, when the weather was grand. He is now ensconced in the local Funny Facility. For now. I just have so many questions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
StringOFperils:

Crane on the brain, Stork. Let it go. Or you'll be up there. And that's really not good for the turntables.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
Gina Bacon:

Hello, Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm

fred, I think it's this one, with Symphony in C, and some other things: www.nycballet.com...

Sounds like Crane Guy went topless, in the lost-his-head sense…
Avatar 4:20pm

OOhh. marathon show, live from atop the crane!! It's brilliant! At the rate these guys are working (and getting seriously interrupted) they'll never finish.

@adamdoesit: Balanchine is good, but boring by now. Peck can be interesting, not always. I know nothing about Reisen, thanks for the tip. Kyle Abraham could be good to great, the last time I saw him was Covid-impaired, but they soldiered on, not ideal but generous, and I needed that

Been listening, what great programming, Stork! Lots of stuff I hadn't heard! Ibrahim didn't sing often (at least when I saw him), but it was a treat when he did!

Can't figure out who was tapping that - gonna say tambourine? Now it's stopped. No credit given that i can find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm

Maybe some distortion, but Barbieri is one of those players who can shriek and blow you to bits when he wants to.
That is a tambourine
