With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

October 9, 2022: Abdullah Ibrahim's 88th Birthday Bash Weekend, Part 2
We continue our festival of rousing, moving music, celebrating the life and art of pianist, saxophonist, composer, teacher, and anti-apartheid hero Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand). Tracing his early days as a be-bop jazz musician in Cape Town, South Africa, through his years in exile living in the US, back again to South Africa, and to his current home in Germany. Ibrahim is not only still active - he’s just started on a European tour!

Ibrahim didn't sing often in concert (at least not when I saw him), but the few times he did, it was amazing. Not a trained singer, but such soul...

Earlier, I learned that today is also the birthday of that great auteur of almost-silent film, Jacques Tati. Ever since, I've been wondering what it'd be like to watch Playtime with the sound off and Abdullah Ibrahim on.
