The Cool Greenhouse | Hard Rock Potato | Hard Rock Potato Single | Melodic | 2022 | Hard Rock Potato is the first single taken from the new Cool Greenhouse album 'Sod's Toastie' out 11th November on Melodic. “Hard Rock Potato” takes the listener on a post-punk head trip, riding on a roughshod riff but coming from surreal angles with the Tom Greenhouse’s vocals pulling moisture out of the air like Ron Popeil on a bender. But wait, there’s more! Contrasting the brittle guitars, the squelch saturated keys bounce around the headspace with a dizzying elasticity. It’s hard to work psych and post-punk in tandem, but the band seem to be making the mash work seamlessly. “It’s like Windows 98 in here.”... superbly droll, witty paradox-filled, absurdist...and that's what makes The Cool Greenhouse so goddamn cool. | * | 0:02:31 (Pop-up) |
Lithics | Beat Fall | Tower Of Age | Trouble In Mind | 2020 | Lithics are from Portland. We have played them before on the show because...we like them a lot. A LOT. This is from their second album Tower of Age. Singer Guitarist Aubrey mentions that "Tower Of Age" refers to "he fortress you build up within yourself over time and the walls you erect to protect yourself. And personally, it’s about tearing those walls down and the process of letting go." She also enjoys watching birds, gardening and making ceramic sculpture. | 0:06:26 (Pop-up)
Finom | Mine | Mine Single | Sub Pop | 2020 | Finom is a rock band from Chicago, which singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist duo Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart. The two formed Finom in 2014 as an outlet to explore an unconventional approach to their instruments. “That’s the whole genesis of the band: us walking up to our guitars and saying, ‘how can we make this noisemaker do something different?” Spin Mag wrote: ”Finom’s aesthetic universe has the cramped intimacy of a small rehearsal space, and they are its masters. Anything they can squeeze inside—swirling baroque vocal melodies, punchy punk power chords, three-minute rockers and dreamlike chamber-pop suites—ends up sounding like Finom.” | 0:09:31 (Pop-up)
Pixeltan | I Told You So | Yamerana-I | DFA | 2001 | This could have come out yesterday or 20 years ago. Turns out it was 20 years ago. Pixeltan were (are?) a Brooklyn based noise rock/electronic band consisting of Mika Yoneta (vocals/keyboard), Devin Flynn (bass/percussion), and Hisham Bharoocha (drums/electronics). Bharoocha used to be in Black Dice, while Yoneta and Flynn are from Plate Tectonics. While remaining minimal enough to stay cool, Pixeltan manages to ride perverted human drum-machine beats just on the edge of exploding. The crackly, fucked-up guitar (it's a synth! No, wait, it's a bass!) is consistently surprising in its range of sounds. They were great. I wish they still made records. Time for a reunion? | 0:12:46 (Pop-up)

BZDET | I Don't Need Viagra Boyzz | KŁAMCA | Syf Records | 2022 | Released Aug 23, this can be yours on Bandcamp for any price you choose. BZDET are on Syf Records, Szczecin, Poland. Their band name translates to "Rubbish". New album KŁAMCA translates to "Liar". Viagra Boys | ADD | Cave World | Year 0001 | 2022 | Third album Stockholm's Viagra Boys. Reportedly: "After last year’s well-received Welfare Jazz, the Boys re-recorded a cache of existing material while American-born vocalist Sebastian Murphy rewrote the lyrics from scratch, stewing on the buzzwords and crises of summer 2021: anti-vaxxers, adrenochrome, mental health, gun violence." | * | 0:29:48 (Pop-up) |
Les Big Byrd | Eyes Like Dead Stars | Eyes Like Dead Stars [Digital Single] | Chimp Limbs | 2022 | New track, released Aug 24, from this band that includes former Viagra Boys synth player Martin Ehrencron (2015–2019.) " Psych-leaning indie act Les Big Byrd was formed in Stockholm, Sweden around 2011 by Joakim Åhlund and Frans Johansson. Two stalwarts of the Swedish underground music scene, Åhlund was formerly of garage-flavored act the Caesars and also worked with the more electronic project Teddybears. Johansson had been part of Fireside, a rock band signed for a time to Def American. After the dissolution of both of their bands, the two came together over a love of experimental rock sounds, forming Les Big Byrd with former Fireside drummer Nino Keller and keyboardist Konie. The band, made up of music heads and studio engineers, began jamming and cultivating ideas, eventually releasing single Zig-Smile to moderate buzz. A chance encounter at a record store between the Les Big Byrd folks and a visiting Anton Newcombe (on tour with Brian Jonestown Massacre) resulted in a lengthy conversation about music, which eventually led to Newcombe inviting the band to his Berlin studios for a few days of jamming. The recordings resulted in the band's 2014 debut album They Worshipped Cats." | * *** | 0:33:30 (Pop-up) |

No Trend | Reality Breakdown | Too Many Humans | No Trend Records | 1983 | No Trend was an American noise rock and hardcore punk group from Ashton, Maryland, formed in 1982. They were considered anti-hardcore, with the members, especially guitarist and lyricist Frank Price, vehement about their abhorrence towards the punk youth subculture. The band was known for their confrontational stage performances, which normally involved aggressively baiting their punk audience.[1] They were influenced by Public Image Ltd. and Flipper. They released three full-length albums, two released independently and one issued through Touch and Go Records. A fourth album that was recorded in 1987 but never released was finally issued as More in 2001. Between 1982 and 88 there were no less than 21 members who came and went as part of this band. They also worked with Lydia Lunch. This song is the shit. | 0:47:29 (Pop-up)
Plus Instruments | Freundschaft | Februari - April '81 | Kremlin | 1981 | Plus Instruments' existence spans over the last 3 decades in a variety of constellations. Often also credited + Instruments the project was established in 1978 by Truus de Groot in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, as she tinkered with toy and electronic instruments in her flat - amidst the explosion of Punk Rock. Plus Instruments released their first e.p. single in 1979 on Dutch label Plurex with a duet called “BandT-Plus Instruments” (the B stands for "Bregt" and T is Truus). Playing odd electronic instruments, Bass and vocals, most of their performances were improvised. They teamed up with Michel Waisvisz, the inventor of the Crackle Synthesizer in numerous performances where they peddled their strange single. After hundreds of performances all through Europe Truus was looking for more challenges and in 1980 that became a possibility after she went to see Rhys Chatham play in her hometown of Eindhoven she struck up a friendship with the drummer, David Linton. He extended an invitation to her for a NYC visit. In 1981 she got on a plane to NYC never to call the Netherlands her home again. Armed with background tapes of electronic percussion she reformed Plus Instruments with Lee Ranaldo (now in Sonic Youth) on guitar and David Linton on Drums, while Truus played Bass and sang Lead Vocals. They quickly recorded and released an album "February - April 1981" on the Dutch Kremlin label. With this line-up they hit the New York club scene, released an Album and on to a European Tour. n 1983 Truus took a U-turn from the Electronic experimental Euro-Beat and temporarily moved to Memphis to start Trigger & the Thrill Kings with Jim Duckworth (Gun Club) playing a very raunchy Blues, country rockabilly mix. Again they toured throughout Europe and the US and released various records with various line-ups. From that point Plus Instruments went into hibernation. | 0:51:32 (Pop-up)
Charles De Goal | Dans Le Labyrinthe | Algorythmes | New Rose Records | 1980 | Charles De Goal was the minimal synth project of Patrick Blain. They stayed anonymous for several years. The Trouser Press review of this album is as follows: “Stylish but awkward, this French artist is at his best on weird, moody synthesizer workouts...those songs that rely on choppy guitar and weak singing aren’t as effective. A version of Bowie’s “Hang on to Yourself” (on Algorhythmes) is skittish and tense, but not especially different from the original; its inclusion seems purposeless.”....and they could not be more wrong. This album is a stone cold minimalist synth post punk GEM. | 0:54:56 (Pop-up)
End Of Data | Sarah | Sahrah | Divine | 1984 | End of Data originated from Rennes, France. They were active from 83 to 86. The band shared members with the similarly fawned over Charles De Goal but skewed even more frantic than that unit’s mash of synth and post-punk boasted. This tune is dark batwing perfection...between the grinding synth, smeared eyeliner baritone vocals and piano outro it is...a tune that stays with you for a long time. So long, in fact I "lost" it for several years...you know when you forget who does that amazing song and you can't track it down? Yeah, that. Well I found it again and I'm so glad I did. | 0:57:06 (Pop-up)

Prolapse | Flex | Backsaturday | Jetset / Big Cat | 1996 | This song came into my mind on Monday and so here it is, all 15 minutes of it. There is an excellent clip of them performing this song at a festival, that shows the brilliant intensity of the band and the frightening dynamic between singers Linda Steelyard and Mick Derrick (AKA "Scottish Mick", since there were two Micks in the band.) By the end of the song, the frenzied band is rushed by the frenzied audience. Highly recommended watching. Beak> | Ah Yeh (Full Length Version) | Oh Know / Ah Yeh | Invada Records | 2021 | Beak>> will (finally) be making their Canadian live debut in Toronto on Sep. 19. Excited to see them soon on these shores! "Featuring members of Portishead and Moon Gangs, Beak> is a trio crafting dense and atmospheric music inspired by dub, Krautrock, and the Beach Boys. The group began in late 2008, when Portishead producer/multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barrow, bassist Billy Fuller, and keyboardist Matt Williams jammed at Invada Records' Christmas party, then started playing as Beak> early in 2009. They recorded their debut album in 12 days with a strict set of rules: the trio members recorded all of their parts in the same room, and no overdubbing was allowed." "In mulling over their career, it’s staggering to realize that Sonic Youth not only delivered a healthy slab of releases as a unit but also have a myriad of shelved material still waiting for broader ears. While the group’s current Bandcamp abode lays out a generous amount of it, a bunch more has yet to surface. And it’s a massive mountain to chip away at in the sense of the group output alone; individual members’ projects are a whole other game, needless to say. "In/Out/In" ably delivers a new slab of mostly-unheard Sonic righteousness, with a scope on the post 2000-era band in especially zoned/exploratory regions." (Brian Turner) |

Tona Ohama | My Time | The Potato Farm Tapes | Minimal Wave | 2012 | One of Canada's greatest kept secrets, Tona Walt Ohama grew up on a potato farm in rural Alberta. As a child he had became infatuated with music. When he was a teenager he came across a synthesizer in a music store and immediately purchased it, obsessed with its weird unconventional sounds. Shortly afterwards he was introduced to the music of John Foxx and he knew exactly what he wanted to do, his next big purchase was a 1/2″ 8 track reel-to-reel tape recorder. In the early Eighties, Tona started releasing music under the name Ohama on his own Midnite News Music label which he sold through local shops and magazine ads to fans all over the world. He played live shows across Canada accompanied only by a reel-to-reel tape player and provocative props. His innovative self-produced video for My Time played on Much Music and his 1st full-length LP I Fear What I Might Hear climbed the Canadian alternative music charts. Today Ohama is actively producing music again, and recently released Earth History Multiambient an album of new songs which also includes an interactive indeterminate piece designed to be played on multiple stereos at once. | 1:41:55 (Pop-up)
Vital Sines | Collage | Collage 12" | Vital Sines | 1984 | Toronto Queen St. mainstays Vital Sines formed in 1980. The band got their start in punk rock venues in Toronto playing under the name 'The Offenders'. When Scott Taylor, the original drummer left the band they changed the name to Vital Sines, releasing their first indie single, "Subway Suicide" in 1981. The success of the Collage EP and its video led to jobs as opening acts for Shriekback, Hunters & Collectors, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Love and Rockets. This led to college tours in the eastern US, but in May 1987 the midst of their popularity, Swinghammer and drummer Glenn Milchem left the band; Milchem joining Andrew Cash and then Blue Rodeo. The group disbanded in 1988, shortly thereafter. | 1:45:43 (Pop-up)
Norda | West Over Seas | Smash Records | In early 1984 Brat X returned to Toronto from the UK and was hungry to keep playing. He joined us in Sturm Group for a while playing percussion but he was far better playing bass. Thus, the creation of Norda. Norda consisted of Colin, from Body Bag, and Brat's ex Cyn D both on vocals, Brat playing bass, Tod on guitar and me on drums.. Unlike Sturm Group, Norda was quite free form, a lot of the songs were improvised because we only had five real songs. Soon after we started, we recorded “West Over Seas” at Wellesley and the results were magical. We pressed 500 copies of the 3 song E.P. and they all sold very quickly. From April 1984 to July of 1985 Norda played 18 shows. When Brat passed away, we compiled the Cenotaph cassette from various live recordings. The performance of West Over Seas on the cassette melds two versions. It starts with Brat singing and playing bass at the Backdoor in Kitchener and then transitions to the DMZ memorial to Brat at the DMZ. Colin is singing, and Pis is playing bass. Tod masterfully blended the two versions together. | 1:49:54 (Pop-up)
Sturm Group | L-Word | Sturm Group | Sounds On The Street | 1983 | Shortly after their inception in 1982, Toronto's Sturm Group suddenly found their name on a host of prestigious bills across town. "We opened for L'Etranger at the Cabana Room in January, followed by numerous shows at the Beverley, and opening slots for Rent Boys, Tulpa and Vital Sines at the Rivoli." They released 3 albums between 1984 and 1989, all well reviewed both here and in the UK. Sadly, the last album "Grind" was a good descriptor of where the band was at...worn down by the Canadian music scene (CFNY DJs trashed them on air) and by maintaining day jobs while trying to make art...as well as disillusionment with the end of the post punk scene of the 80's they eventually called it quits. | 1:55:38 (Pop-up)

Blue Peter | Radio Silence | Radio Silence | Ready Records | 1980 | Often classified as New Wave or New Romantic, Toronto by way of Markham's Blue Peter certainly had elements of Post Punk as well. Best known for their single "Don't Walk Past" this tune is perhaps more reflective but shimmers with its own intensity, largely due to the incredible presence of Paul Humphrey's intense vocal performance and distinctive baritone. Paul passed away passed away in 2021 after a lengthy battle with Multiple System Atrophy. He is sorely missed. | 2:03:42 (Pop-up) |
