Soft Drinks | Pepsi Cola | Various - The Thing From The Crypt | Dark Entries | 2013 | Thank goodness for Dark Entries and their reissues. SOFT DRINKS were a short-lived synth-punk trio featuring the Jon Greville of Rudimentary Peni and Martin Drooper of The Magits who released a 3 song EP on Outer Himmylayan Productions. "The Thing From The Crypt," a 16-track compilation of UK DIY/Synth/New Wave/Post-Punk originally released in 1981. Showcasing the thriving post punk sound of Watford, a town in Hertfordshire, England, located 20 minutes northwest of central London. "'The Thing From The Crypt' neither attempts to sell a 'Wotford sound' nor claims to be a comprehensive guide to the area's best beat bands. Like all good compilations, its essence is variety: some tracks will make you come whilst other will make you vomit." | 0:02:08 (Pop-up)
Visitors | Electric Heat | Electric Heat 7" | Deep Cuts Records | 1979 | Visitors were a post punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland and formed in late 70s. Active from 1979-1981, the band consisted of brothers John and Derek McVay, pal Colin Craigie and rotating drummers Alan Laing and Keith Wilson. After impressing Peel with their debut single ‘Electric Heat’, he went on to financial back further recordings and gave them their own Peel Sessions, despite such a limited catalogue. After signing to 4AD, the Edinburgh group called it quits without getting to record their first full-length. Canadian label Telephone Explosion is releasing Poet’s End, a compilation of their three 7″s with four previously unreleased tracks. Their sound was classically angular with synths that were somehow both monotone and relentless. | 0:04:31 (Pop-up)
Gambit of Shame | Dancing With The Turks | No Bounds - 1978 - 1982 Recordings | Dead Hedgehog Enterprises | 2021 | Hertfordshire's Gambit of Pain may have fallen through the cracks, and existed on the fringe of the scene, materializing from the fallout of other punk bands as a mutant form frm 1979 until their disbanding in 1984. They had numerous lineups over the years but hit their peak with the release of their only single "No Bounds" which was produced by ex-Soft Machine member and musical activist, Robert Wyatt. | 0:08:18 (Pop-up)
X-Ray Pop | La Machine á Rêver | La Machine á Rêver - single | MB5 | 1984 | X RAY POP are the synth-pop duo of Doc Pilot and Zouka Dzaza from Tours, France. They got their start in the no wave art group Bocal 5 in 1981 and split off in 1984 to focus on their own brand of quirky synthesized electronics. Influenced by Erik Satie, Brigitte Bardot, Suicide and Young Marble Giants, they call their music "minimum naive new wave." Armed with a Casio PT-20 keyboard and a rudimentary Yamaha MR10 drum machine they recorded their demo cassette and first 7" "Eurasienne"/ "La Machine à Rêver" in 1984. Their songs are short, concise and well structured; richly textured, moving at a quick speed with hardly a pause. The demos show a sense of humor, vitality and carefree playfulness. Zouka's pouting, tongue-in-cheek vocals (sung in French) come together for a catchy, sensuous, danceable, eccentric psychedelic ride. Reminiscent of the Mo-dettes, early OMD or Algebra Suicide, X RAY POP could be the missing link to Stereolab. The video for this tune is sublimely beachy!!!! | 0:11:00 (Pop-up)
Inflatable Boy Clams | Marin | Inflatable Boy Clams | Subterranean Records | 1981 | San Francisco provocateurs Inflatable Boy Clams recorded one of the greatest all-female art punk records ever made, a wrongfully obscure five-song double 7-inch EP which has garnered a cult following ever since its initial release on Subterranean Records in 1981. While the music blends simple instrumentation and captivating, quirky lyrics, the artwork looks like an early Rough Trade single, complete with posh Winogrand-esque photo of the group. More of a performance art troupe than a traditional rock band, the Boy Clams often rotated between instruments and shared vocal duties: JoJo Planteen, Judy Gittelsohn and Carol Detweiler (the latter two both members of Pink Section), along with saxophone player Genvieve Boutet de Monvel. | 0:13:20 (Pop-up)
Plastiktanz | Mir Geht Es Danke Gut | Wir Sind Rein | Musik-Für-Festliche-Stunden | 1981 | Not much is known or documented about Plastiktanz. Only one single...this one...exists. No info otherwise on this German band. This song appears on "Sowas von egal" a collaboration between the Hamburg record label Bureau B and the Hamburg party series Damaged Goods where they present rare, obscure synth & wave discs from the early 1980s which absolutely deserve to heard. It was clear from the outset that “Sowas von egal 2” would need to scale similar heights of excellence as its predecessor, featuring carefully selected, sought-after, danceable tunes. In contrast to the first volume, most of the acts here were only active in the early 1980s and have not released any records since then. The tape artists were particularly invested in the DIY ethic – as is often apparent in their sound aesthetics and the unbridled energy which has lost none of its intensity today. Their art was seldom – if ever – tempered by commercial considerations or sales strategies. | 0:15:50 (Pop-up)

Introduction To Canadian Music |

1997 |
Hugh Le Caine (May 27, 1914 – July 3, 1977) was a Canadian physicist, composer, and instrument builder. Though his composition output was small, Le Caine is remembered as one of the great pioneer composers of musique concrète, his best known work being Dripsody (1955), a piece of musique concrète based on the sound of a single drop of water that over the course of the piece is permuted and contorted into a variety of sounds. Le Caine used a metal wastebasket filled with two inches of water, held an eyedropper ten inches above the wastebasket, and tape-recorded the water drops for thirty minutes. After reviewing the resulting recording, Le Caine selected one of the water drops and spliced it onto a short tape loop. This allowed the water drop to repeat like a traditional ostinato figure. |

On Uzun Havalar she translates her experimental background into these floating folk ballads. |

Spread Joy | Contrition | II | Feel It | 2022 | Released May 13, this is one of the few songs not yet played from this album on WFMU. Available for "Name Your Price" on Bandcamp. "Spread Joy may as well be their own musical genre. An immediate flavor and mercurial 'Qu'est-ce que c'est?' begin their second album with the 45 second opener "Ow". Coincidentally, the album spins at 45, just like Spread Joy's self-titled 2021 debut. The Chicago group came out of nowhere, mid-pandemic, with a stunning ten track LP on Feel It. Returning to the warm analog environment at Jamdek Recording Co., Spread Joy have truly honed their craft across these 17 minutes and 17 seconds. This is the kind of punk-forward music that is made to be heard and felt, far from the distorted mirror of the web. A group living free, moving at their own speed, and making music that will be remembered - that's Spread Joy, folks!" Spread Joy (Bandcamp) | 0:28:07 (Pop-up)

Crime Of Passing | Hunting Knife | Crime Of Passing | Future Shock Recordings | 2022 | Released Apr 22, this the only full length song from this album not yet played on WFMU. Available for "Name Your Price" on Bandcamp. "A stunning combination of style, vision, and execution. Crime of Passing, alongside related projects like The Serfs and The Drin, are at the helm of Cincinnati, Ohio's vibrant post-punk underground. Led by Andie Luman's fervent vocals, Crime of Passing's self-titled debut album is a wondrously textured web of sound. Shades of early 80's post-punk, synth-driven electro pop, and heavier Industrial/Krautrock tones combine across an album both instantly memorable and futuristic. Nine cold tracks for a new dark age." They jumped into the chatroom as we were broadcasting! They said the following about this song "The title actually means something like "Did you know" in a sort of condescending tone... ..."Tetszik tudni" is about being annoyed, the chorus goes "What's bothering you? Everything. Who's bothering you? Everyone". The second verse is basically a full on rant about pensioners. Just a song for blowing off some steam." and about the band: "I've been making music on my own since 2006 but the catalog only starts at 2014, I ditched the old stuff cause it's crap. Now we're doing stuff with a 4piece, not really touring sadly but we're definately trying to change that." Gidnim'Rém (Bandcamp) | * | 0:36:14 (Pop-up) |

No info seems to exist for this band at this point, except for tags "rock garage heavy rock metal psychedelic witch San Francisco" This track is heavy, sludgy, drenched in reverb and maybe a little crunched. It has lovely singsong vocals buried amongst the garage-psych chug. Probably best not to confuse them with H.E.A.T. from Sweden. That is a different band. H E A T (Bandcamp) | * | 0:39:01 (Pop-up) |

TEKE::TEKE | Yoru Ni | Shirushi | Kill Rock Stars | 2021 | TEKE::TEKE is a Montreal-based Japanese psych-rock group composed of guitarists Serge Nakauchi Pelletier & Hidetaka Yoneyama, bass player Mishka Stein, drummer Ian Lettre, flutist Yuki Isami, trombone player Etienne Lebel, and visual artist and vocalist Maya Kuroki. Featuring traditional Japanese instruments, flute and trombone alongside raging guitars and a pulsing rhythm section, TEKE::TEKE creates a sound reminiscent of 1960’s and 70’s era psychedelic Japanese soundtracks, with a frenetic, modern twist. On their debut album Shirushi, TEKE::TEKE blend classic Japanese balladry, surf rock, psychedelia, and more to produce a set of songs that play like soundtracks to a wildly eccentric epic film saga. We have played them before, and willl play them again! They take their name from the Japanese ghost story and Japanese urban legend about the ghost of a schoolgirl who is said to have fallen onto a railway line, where her body was cut in half by a train. She is an onryō, or a vengeful spirit, who lurks in urban areas and around train stations at night. | 0:54:24 (Pop-up)
The Sueves | People They Come In Waves | R.I.P Clearance Event | Hozac Records | 2018 | Chicago’s punk underworld has reimagined itself several times over the past twenty years, from the cavorting slime punk damage of the early 2000s, through the fracturing of styles and directions a few years later, it’s all been simmering salaciously for generations now, and for the last few years, only a few really noteworthy band have grasped the raw agitation as well as The Sueves. Rearing their ugliness up through the tropes of plastic flowers and goofy sunglasses, these brave young ravagers are not content to sit idly by as the stench of indifference passes over the masses, always the “least chill” band at the rock’n roll party and that is really a good thing. You can’t just sit still when The Sueves are wielding their wares, both in person and on record, the aggression has to burst out somehow, and although it’s far, far easier to just appeal to the low-hanging fruit dangling at the bottom of the rock’n roll food chain, it’s far more respectable to be the ones who are bleeding and bruised, flipping over the tables & chairs with reckless abandon, every single time. | 0:58:24 (Pop-up)
Night Beats | Egypt Berry | Who Sold My Generation | Heavenly Recordings | 2016 | Rajan Billingsley moved to Seattle to study comparative religion at the University of Washington. Leaving Dallas, which he saw as "a wasteland of music", he founded Night Beats in 2009. Named after the Sam Cooke album 'Night Beat', the solo self-recorded Street (Atomic) EP was released that year via Holy Twist Records. After trying out a couple of different lineups, he asked high school friend and former B.B Mercy drummer James Traeger who was studying in Austin, Texas to move to Seattle to join Night Beats. After working together as a duo for a few months, they recruited bassist Tarek Wegner in January 2010 and played their first gig in March of that year at a house party in Seattle. Wegner, originally from Tacoma, Washington, had previously played with The Drug Purse and Paris Spleen. In ‘Who Sold My Generation’, Night Beats have concocted a broiling album which by any rights ought to blast them out of the basement of cultdom. The accompanying live shows are guaranteed to inspire levitation of one form or another. Get up on their cloud and you might just glimpse clear light. | 1:00:56 (Pop-up)

Holy Tongue is a collaboration between percussionist Valentina Magaletti, best known for her work with Vanishing Twin, Tomaga, UUUU, Raime, Nicolas Jaar and Jandek among many others, and producer Al Wootton (TRULE Records, FKA Deadboy). This first EP is a product of an improvised session in East London. Heavily influenced by dub reggae, the two bring a mutual appreciation for the experimental dub of On-U-Sound, Muslimgauze, and post-punk bands such as Liquid Liquid and 23 Skidoo to the forefront of the sound. The result is an EP of psychedelic, free-form, high energy, spiritual dub-dance music. |

Deerhoof | My Lovely Cat! | My Lovely Cat! (Digital Single) | Joyful Noise | 2022 | Thought about Deerhoof on Tuesday, they released a new single on Wednesday (Sep 7) & now we play it on Thursday. Life is weird sometimes. Speaking of that... "In 2019, the internet-famous cat Lil Bub died at the age of eight, and the world mourned. Today, the oblique indie rock veterans Deerhoof have dedicated their new single “My Lovely Cat” to Lil Bub, even though they weren’t specifically thinking about Bub when they wrote the song. Deerhoof recorded “My Lovely Cat” with Bub’s owner Mike Bridavsky at Winnipeg, Canada’s No Fun Club. The new track comes less than a year after Deerhoof’s album Actually, You Can, and it’s a little more straightforward than a lot of Deerhoof songs. Deerhoof leader Satomi Matsuzaki wrote and sang the lyrics to the new song “My Lovely Cat” in Japanese, and she also designed the cover art. The song is as skittery and off-kilter as you might expect from this band, but it’s also got a gentle, bittersweet hook and a giddy and unpredictable sort of energy — a bit like a cat, you could say. In a press release, Deerhoof have this to say: "If you were going to compose a song about a cute cat from the internet, then get it recorded and mixed and mastered by an outside producer known not only for their recording and mixing and mastering, but for their cute cat from the internet, well, you would be shrewd indeed. But this of course we did not do, because we didn’t know about Mike Bridavsky or Lil Bub when we wrote the song! Well, we think about him now: a true collaborator and artist and friend."" Speaking of Winnipeg's No Fun Club recording studio... "Built over the course of five years, Winnipeg’s No Fun Club studios brings together new and vintage technologies inside an opulent facility built out of 300-year-old reclaimed barn wood." Pixies | Dregs Of The WIne | Doggerel | Pixies Recording Inc / BMG | 2022 | Released Sep 6, in advance of the new album out at the end of the month. "‘Dregs Of The Wine’ marks Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago’s first writing credit, with frontman Black Francis providing the lyrics which, he says, are about “living in Los Angeles in the ’90s with my then-wife, hanging out with Joey and his ex-wife, lots of trips to Las Vegas, a lot of drinking, little bit drug taking, some genuine good times.” Speaking about the origin of the song, Santiago added: “I guess I was in kind of a zombie state, just playing. After I stopped playing I put it down and went, ‘Well, that was a fucking waste of time, what a piece of shit I am’. “I beat myself up a lot, but my girlfriend, unbeknownst to me, was recording me. She played it back to me and I go, ‘Fuck! Hold on a second here! This stuff is good!’”" | * | 1:22:07 (Pop-up) |
Björk, feat. Kasimyn | Atopos | Fossora | One Little Indian | 2022 | Released Sep 6, in advance of her upcoming 10th album Fossora, which is the feminine version of the Latin word for "digger." She is also launching a podcast series exploring her discography. "After having just announced her tenth studio album, Fossora, Björk is back with the first taste off her forthcoming record, "atopos," and it's safe to say its unlike anything we've heard from Björk before. / "Describing the album opener as being “kinda like Fossora’s passport,” the track makes good on her promise to deliver a darker, bass-heavy sound with a morose clarinet sextet and a sharp, throbbing beat courtesy of Gabber Modus Operandi's DJ Kasimyn. Directed by Viðar Logi, the single arrives alongside a fungi-filled visual that sees Björk and her compatriots partake in a subterranean rave. Drawing inspiration from feelings of isolation during the pandemic and the gabber-filled raves she would throw in her living room, "atopos" dwells on the notion of connection and ways to foster and embrace that which binds us together. “The lyrics are inspired by what Roland Barthes described as the unclassifiable OTHER," the singer said in a tweet. She goes on to quote the song's lyrics: "Our differences are irrelevant our union is stronger than us.”" | * | 1:25:39 (Pop-up) |
Lucrecia Dalt | Dicen | ¡Ay! | RVNG Intl. | 2022 | This track released Aug 23. "Lucrecia Dalt (born 1980) is a Colombian experimental musician who currently resides in Berlin. While her earlier releases were rooted in electronic dance music her work has evolved over time to become more overtly abstract and experimental." On her upcoming album ¡Ay!, Dalt continues to explore conceptual narratives while pushing her sound design to new heights. ¡Ay! tells the story of an eccentric alien entity named Preta who has just landed on Earth, and on the album’s latest offering, “Dicen,” Dalt acts as a distant third-person omniscient narrator, detailing the gossip surrounding Preta’s arrival. “They say … she walks in a borrowed skin,” Dalt sings. | * | 1:30:23 (Pop-up) |
Mauskovic Dance Band | Bukaroo Bank | Bukaroo Bank | Bongo Joe | 2022 | This track out this week, full album out Oct 28, 2022. The band is from Amsterdam, Netherlands. "Recorded in 2020, during one of the Netherlands’ intermittent lockdown bouts, for this one the MDB wanted to step up from their previous homebase, Garage Noord – an ad hoc Amsterdam space for recording, practise and after-hours parties. They chose Electric Monkey, operated by engineer Kasper Frenkel. His stacks of what Nicola calls “very strange equipment”, and ability to sprinkle magic dub dust over everything, suited the vibe perfectly. The results glow and shiver with assembled synth sounds, rhythms spliced and echoed in a way that hails late Jamaican dub great Lee Perry – maybe the band’s biggest influence. Some sections might remind you of Afro-disco or slightly older highlife, others industrial prototypes like early Cabaret Voltaire, or 1980s On-U Sound mainstays like African Head Charge, or NYC groovers such as Liquid Liquid... there are outbreaks of saxophone, congas, echo units, wah-wah disco guitars, beats that sound programmed but aren’t (a nod to MDB’s industrial side). If that sounds fun to you, be assured that Bukaroo Bank is an irrepressibly fun album – but one that contains multitudes. Romperayo | El Borracho | Así No Se Puede Muchaches | Souk Records | 2022 | Romperayo are from Bogotá, Colombia, this album came out July 2022, and they already have new songs up on Bandcamp in the last few days. "El Borracho" translates to "The Drunkard", by the way. "Romperayo is a musical journey through Colombian tropical folklore of the second half of the 20th century, a mischievous and modern interpretation of the up-tempo rhythms of “Descarga” and the psychedelic sounds of ’70s cumbia. Romperayo is distinguished by the prominence of the rhythm section, probably because the band was formed by the “capitán” of the new generation of Colombian percussionists: drummer Pedro Ojeda, who also plays in Los Pirañas, Palanca, CieloMama, Frente Cumbiero, Ondatrópica and Mucho Indio. Eblis Alvarez (from the world-renowned Meridian Brothers and Los Pirañas)tweaks samplers and electronics, organ and piano virtuoso Ricardo Gallo plays the synths, and well-known double-bassist and composer Juan Manuel Toro is on the electric bass. By cleverly incorporating urban sounds and sampling techniques into the tropical music of the past decades, Romperayo embodies Colombia’s modern folklore scene." Krisma | C-Rock | Chinese Restaurant | Universal Italia | 1977 | In 1976, Maurizio Arcieri and his wife Christina Moser formed the duo under the name "Chrisma" in Milan. The name was a combination of their initials. The very same year, the couple moved to London to record "U" and "Amore" with the producer Nico Papathanassiou and his brother Vangelis. Chinese Restaurant is a fascinating record, with a number of musical references from rock to minimal synth but this tune shines in its absolutely perfect nod to Krautrock and all things Motorik. | 1:56:07 (Pop-up)

They have released eight studio albums, Lightbulbs is their third. They're not really a krautrock band either, they just play danceable pop music with one hell of a deadpan expression. Lena Zavaroni, who is mentioned as the ghost in the lyrics was a Scottish child star of the 70s and 80's, a little girl with an incredible voice, somewhat similar to Amy Winehouse. The band consists of Michael DRUMMER (drums), Franz BARGMANN (guitar) and Timm BROCKMANN (keyboards). They have been attached with a ''Krautrock Guerilla'' epithet for their modern type of Krautrock the play, which, as reported, blends elements of NEU!, KRAFTWERK and Can and often improvise their compositions. I'm a Republican Punk, but she was an amazing Woman. My Smiths CD is sitting in the rack, mocking my sadness.

I've been making music on my own since 2006 but the catalog only starts at 2014, I ditched the old stuff cause it's crap. Now we're doing stuff with a 4piece, not really touring sadly but we're definately trying to change that.
