La Bolcuc was a musician and singer of French Canadian music. During the peak of her popularity in the 1930s, she was known as the Queen of Canadian Folk Singers.Bolduc is often considered to be Quebec's first singer-songwriter. Her style combined the traditional folk music of Ireland and Quebec, usually in upbeat, comedic songs. |

Ventre De Biche | Un Bon Vigile | Viens Mourir | Teenage Menopause | 2015 | What stands out most about Ventre De Biche is the immediacy of his music: an obvious DIY approach, a synth, a rhythm machine, a few effects, punk converted into a machine. There is in the music of Ventre De Biche aka Luca Retraite an urgency, a disarming intention, lyrics that transpire the dull and sad corridors of a CCAS in a town of less than 4000 inhabitants somewhere in France.... | 0:03:12 (Pop-up) |
Pottery | Take Your Time | Welcome To Bobby's Motel | Royal Mountain | 2020 | Welcome to Bobby's Motel is the debut full-length studio album by Canadian five-piece indie rock/garage punk band Pottery. It was released on June 26, 2020 through PTKF/Partisan Records, and was produced by Jonathan Schenke. Recording sessions took place at Break Glass Studio in Montreal during summer 2019. They have supported Oh Sees and Fontaines DC, and they are great live! | 0:05:24 (Pop-up) |
CRABE ft. Yuki BT. | Psychologue | Sentients | CRABE | 2021 | Montreal “present-punk” duo Crabe, are Gabriel Lapierre and Martin Poulin-Légaré. This album also includes Montreal mainstay guest appearances by Dan Mongrain (Voïvod), Vincent Peake (Grimskunk). Sentients features which features the band’s signature addictive hooks, repetitive guitar lines and mind-bending switches, but with raucous acoustic drums replaced by an electronic V-Drum from the early 2000s. | 0:08:41 (Pop-up) |
FET.NAT | Trust Cops | Gaoler EP | Boiled Records | 2017 | FET.NAT creates a bombastic mix of left-field punk, free jazz, trip-hop, and precise noise. The Hull, Quebec four-piece is built up of Olivier Fairfield on drums, Pierre-Luc Clement on guitars, Linsey Wellman on saxophone, and punctuated by the nihilistic franglais poetics of vocalist JFNO. His lyrical outbursts evoke the absurdist humour of American Wrestling and kung fu movies, while carrying forward the torch of the Rock In Opposition movement. Known for fiery live performances lifted by their borderline theatrical antics, FET.NAT transcends language and province, reorganizing overlapping nations into a carnival of levitating and confounding grooves. | 0:11:25 (Pop-up) |
Psychedelic Horseshit | French Countryside | Laced | FatCat Records | 2010 | Psychedelic Horseshit is an American band from Columbus, Ohio, that plays a microgenre of lo-fi noise pop that they named "shitgaze". The group was founded by Matt Whitehurst in 2005; he claims the band's name was coined off-the-cuff by Sarah Asher when he and a few musician friends landed a slot playing a jam band festival. P*itchf*ork does not understand this band. Laced was their final release. | 0:15:04 (Pop-up) |

I grew up with this record, and it holds a place of fondness in my heart. There's just something so camp about this tune in particular. I played it once for Chilly Gonzales and he absolutely loved it. Pure Gallic fromage, in the best way possible. |

Bérurier Noir | Soleil Noir | Même Pas Mort | Folklore De La Zone Mondiale | 1989 / 2003 | * This is the song that was played, not the one we announced on air. * "Bérurier Noir, also called the Bérus and abbreviated BxN, is a French punk rock band, originally from Paris. It was the flagship group of the French punk and alternative scene of the 1980s. Disbanded in 1989, the group reformed temporarily between 2003 and 2006. It is mainly composed of two members, Loran on guitar and Fanfan on vocals - notably from the Parisian squat movement - to which is added a rhythm machine (known as "Dédé", an Electro-Harmonix DRM-16), the group having no drummer unlike most bands of the time (like Métal Urbain and Warum Joe)." | 0:26:13 (Pop-up) |
Métal Urbain | Panik | Anarchy In Paris! | Acute Records | 1977 / 2003 | This song was from their first 7", released May 1977. "French Punk band from Paris. Short-lived but influential band of the late seventies, one of the first to combine the drum machine with electric guitars and synthesizers. Also the first act to release a record on the Rough Trade label, and one of the few French bands to record with John Peel. Eric Débris and Charlie H were also members of Metal Boys." | 0:29:37 (Pop-up) |
10LEC6 | Counter Stroke | Join Us! | Troubleman Unlimited | 2005 | I first heard this Paris band on a Rough Trade Compilation & loved the song (this song.) Shortly thereafter, I was fortunate enough to play on a bill with them in Paris. Life is strange that way, sometimes. | 0:31:56 (Pop-up) |
Lederhosen Lucil | La Vocabulaire | Tales From The Pantry | Hypo | 2003 | When I first came to know the world of Lederhosen Lucil, she was based nearby in Ontario, but since then she has been identified as a Montréal musician, as seen in the following summary: "Krista Muir is a Canadian indie rock singer-songwriter and keyboardist based in Montreal, Quebec. She initially used the stage name and persona of Lederhosen Lucil, but in 2007, she also began recording and performing under her own name. She plays two vintage Yamaha keyboards, and sometimes a ukulele, to accompany her singing." | 0:34:22 (Pop-up) |
Pulp | Le Roi Des Fourmis | A Tribute To Polnareff | XIII BIS Records | 2007 | "Although arguably never achieving the fame of contemporaries like Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Dutronic, Michel Polnareff still remains one of the most colourful and fun artists to come out of France during the 60s. Long known for his campy stage presence and flamboyant controversy, Polnareff never strayed too far from controversy, whether it was being physically assaulted on stage or being fined for gross indecency for bearing his ass on a tour poster. Originally released in 1999, A Tribute to Polnareff is essentially a reissue and on paper at least, is a wonderful idea..." This track: Recorded at Axis Studios, Sheffield on 29/30 May 1993. Mixed at Surrey Sound, Kingston-Upon Thames on 2nd June 1993. Bass – Steve Mackey Drums – Nick Banks Engineer – Pete Stewart Guitar [Additional Parts] – Mark Webber Guitar, Violin – Russel Senior* Keyboards – Candida Doyle Producer – Stephen Street Vocals, Guitar – Jarvis Cocker | 0:37:02 (Pop-up) |

Natacha Tertone | Les Cartes Postales | Le Grand Déballage -- [via Les Inrockuptibles "Objectif 2000 v/a] | B Pourquoi B ? | 1999 | 'Les Inrockuptibles' was a music magazine I would read in order to: 1) Try to improve my French & 2) enjoy the 'free' CD compilation that came w/ every issue. That is where I found this Natacha Tertone track. It seems that there is only one album that has ever been released by her. Although she has other musicians on her album, she is clearly the main songwriter and player: "Lyrics By, Music By, Organ, Keyboards, Vocals, Bass Guitar, Piano, Concertina, Guitar – Natacha Tertone" | 0:43:16 (Pop-up) |

Un Soir Chez Norris |

B-side to the Un Soir Chez Norris single from 1971. "At the end of fifties, the R & R music landed in France. A Swiss musician flew to the USA and crossed the country in order to learn the new guitar techniques, which were to transform the electric guitar world. Up to that point this flat instrument, which produced a cold sound and had a very ordinary look, did not attract the guitarist who preferred the warmth of the wood and the wide body of the traditional guitar. Pierre Cavalli was going to become strong link between this old and New World. Keen to learn new techniques, this musician came from la Chaux de Fonds, in the French speaking Switzerland. He was born in the early thirties. Pierre Cavalli’s attitude was to decline classifying musical inspiration because of the technique. For him, every musical instrument was interesting in itself. In the United States of America he met Les Paul, the world famous guitarist, one of the fathers of modern guitar, and understood quickly that all the kinds of music could benefit of the electric guitar." |

A-side to the Un Soir Chez Norris single from 1971. "Pierre could have remained comfortably in Lausanne to manage his fathers music instruments’ shop, which was close to the Saint François place. But he preferred to leave the family nest when he was young, first to make strong studies of violin, while in the evening he played his favourite instrument in the bars. He became very quickly a master in guitar and was high in demand in a very broad audience. He brought back from his American journey an amazing technique which gave him the opportunity to set up his own band which played popular music, but he could also support by his playing the jazz and the modern rock. For example he was the first musician in Europe to play a double neck Gibson, which was understood by the teenagers as he converted to R & R. Pierre Cavalli went far away from that. His technique inspired many musicians eager to improve their guitar play. As he liked the modern things, you could often meet him in a jazz club trying new techniques with one or more guitars, with various amplifiers and reverb kits. In this field it is today quite obvious that he played a big role in teaching to the young people the art of electrical guitar. Like Jimi Hendrix he showed the way to get amazing sounds of their guitar." |

They also recorded under the aliases Buddy "Badge" Montezuma And His Long Smoke Dreamers and Le Bain Didonc. Most of its members went on to form Les Jelly Roll and Koolenn had a solo career in the early 1980s. Cortex, a band masterminded by legendary French musician Alain Mion. They are a a “mythical” band, which is an accurate assessment of them and Mion. Alain Mion has no in-English videos available online. They have no Wikipedia page. There’s not much information about Mireille Dalbray, the band’s singer whose ethereal vocals serve as the highlight of so many Cortex-sampling compositions. But that mystery adds to their appeal. There’s no gimmickry or stunt-sampling with Cortex, just a blank, gleaming canvas ripe for an MC to craft songs that sound like scribes from the heavens. Casual fans may not understand Mion’s musical impact, but your favorite producers do. He’s reportedly France’s most sampled artist, with Whosampled tracking 116 samples of Mion and 124 samples of Cortex (some overlapping). The five-piece band he formed in 1974 with musicians like Alain Gandolfi and Jeff Huttner is the sample source for some of 21st-century rap’s most memorable moments, including Rick Ross’ grandiose “Amsterdam,” Wiz Khalifa’s nothin’-to-somethin’ ode “Visions,” and Lupe Fiasco’s lyrical masterpiece “Mural.” |

Robert Fripp / The League Of Gentlemen | Minor Man | The League Of Gentlemen | EG Records/ Polygram | 1981 | Fripp doesn't completely leave his prog leanings, but he certainly gets close to the post-punk sound with this band. Featuring Barry Andrews on keyboards (Early XTC & Shriekback), and Sara Lee on bass (later with Gang Of Four), many of the songs on this project sounds like early XTC keyboards are fighting the type of guitar playing Fripp brought to the Talking Heads when he made his session appearances. (In fact, David Byrne guested on a solo Fripp song the previous year.) Final note: apparently this track features "Hamsprachtmuzic by Danielle Dax, courtesy of the Lemon Kittens." | 1:30:16 (Pop-up) |
Daniel Francis Doyle | Old Lives | We Bet Our Money On You | We Shot JR | 2009 | Stumbled across this last Sunday, with a post-it note attached to the sleeve "ANGULAR GUITAR DRIVEN ART ROCK / PUNK FROM TEXAS". Part of me felt like I was familiar with the name and I was intrigued by the description. It still felt like I had come across his name before. Later this week, I found another of his records in my collection. (I think I might have shared a bill with him at one point?) Regardless, this sounds to me like it has heavy Robert Fripp leanings, which is why it follows Fripp in this playlist tonight. | 1:34:09 (Pop-up) |
Adrian Belew | The Momur | Lone Rhino | Island | 1982 | Since we're going down a King Crimson / Talking Heads avant/prog/punk wormhole, may as well play Adrian Belew as well. This is from his debut solo album from 1982. None of these last few songs are exactly to my taste, but still, I feel compelled to play them since that's what this week brought. Sidenote: "Belew's daughter Audie (four years old at the time) coined the word "momur" which meant anything that frightened her (monster)." | 1:37:20 (Pop-up) |
Robert Fripp | Under Heavy Manners (feat. David Byrne) | God Save The Queen / Under Heavy Manners (12") | EG Records/ Polygram | 1980 | Well, since I mentioned the David Byrne guest appearance on the Fripp track from 1980, I may as well play it, since this is the wormhole that seems to apply to my second set. The loop used for "Under Heavy Manners" is the first piece performed at Calgary Planetarium, August 8th, 1979. Though vocalized by David Byrne, these lyrics were penned by Robert Fripp. | 1:41:10 (Pop-up) |

Véronique Vincent & Aksak Maboul | I'm Always Crying | Ex-Futur Album | Crammed Discs | 2014 | Heralded as the next album by Belgian avant-rock combo Aksak Maboul in 1981, this collaboration with The Honeymoon Killers' Véronique Vincent was never completed. The project was 'dropped' at some point but listening now to these fine pop songs written by Vincent and Crammed Discs/Aksak Maboul's founder Marc Hollander, one can't help but wonder why. The liner notes ask 'too pop to be experimental? too quirky for '80s pop?…they probably make a lot more sense now than they did then'. Put together from demos and rough mixes recorded at home or Pyramide Studio in Brussels as well as in London and a chalet in the Swiss Alps, the Ex-Futur Album offers a good look, not at what could've been, but at what was and was so close to blossoming into itself. | 1:52:10 (Pop-up) |
Paul Jacobs | Cherry | Pink Dogs On The Green Grass | Blow The Fuse | 2021 | Since arriving in Montreal, Paul Jacobs has cemented a growing reputation as one of the city’s truly prolific, eccentric artists, both as the drummer of Pottery and through fronting his own five-piece band. He’s known for self producing multiple albums annually always accompanied by captivating live performances. From deep emotional melodies to freak out jams, folk pop ballads to synth laced rock and roll epics, along with his hand drawn artwork and animated music videos, Jacobs’ truly creates a world of his own. His sound includes the hooks and rhythms you’d expect from classic rock legends i.e. The Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, and Neil Young, while staying true to his unconventional personal style of composition and production you’d find with artists like Arthur Russel, Kurt Vile and Daniel Johnston. This tune is...awesome. | 1:56:24 (Pop-up) |

Alain Kan | Speed My Speed | Heureusement En France, On Ne Se Drogue Pas... | Les Disque Motors | 1976 | His career started in the middle of the 1960's until the 1980's. Its course was rather atypical, owing to the fact that his release were initially commercial or without wide artistic interest but then became gradually very original and creative, all while being marginalized. He was a precursor singer for openly disclosing his homosexuality. He was oft compared to Bowie, covered a Bowie tune and met him on one occasion. In an odd twist of events, he simply disappeared from the face of the earth one April day in 1990 at the Rue de la Pompe Parisian metro station... |
