A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

That Avengers album, from the late '90's, includes "new" songs recorded with a band she assembled then, but performing songs she remembered the Avengers would play in the old days, but never recorded. The rest of the album includes live cuts that were heavily bootlegged, but never easily available.

No problem, Mr. Fab. I am always doing Sheena's bidding.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

Albini certainly has a fingerprint on a lot of pop culture.

I've seen Motörhead four times. Three times in Portland, once in Seattle. All four were incredible. At the Portland Shows, Lemmy praised Portland the whole time, for the selection of strip bars we had. In Seattle, he complained the whole time, about the lack of strip bars in Seattle.

Lemmy in many things, but in some ways, he is a very simple man.
Avatar 9:28pm
Mr. X:

Plus Motorhead was on The Young Ones once.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

They were! And they were great on The Young Ones.

As a VERY young man, I completely discounted Motörhead, thinking they were a dumb metal band.

But as I got older, I realized that they are a dumb metal band in the same way the Ramones are a dumb punk band, and then it clicked. (Seeing them live also sealed the deal.)

This "History of Portland Punk" comp was assembled by Greg Sage of The Wipers, and is essentially a run-down of all the singles (and a comp) that he released on his old label, Trap Records. I think the CD is out of print, but you can order a CDR of it from Greg direction from Zeno Records, his current label. (Or, at least, could a few years ago.)

The Causey Way is essentially the band "Man Or Astro-Man?" with a different front man, and I think one different member. Causey's gimmick was that he was a cult leader, and was offering people "musical" salvation. Their stage show involved robes and fans throwing dollars on stage and a gun and other weird cult props. I saw them once and they were... sort of terrifying.

At the record store I work at, tapes are selling like crazy. I sold a used Bauhaus tape for $12. The kids was STOKED, and thought he was getting a deal.

My last name is Rich, so I'm set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

So Waddabout the filthy rich??
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Austin Rich:

The Filthy need to be cleaned.

Well, we can clean out their accounts, anyway.

Mr. X:

I didn't realize it was all about thread count.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly, as you get older, the thread count gets higher.
Avatar 10:29pm
Mr. X:

It's up so high now, I'm hanging from a thread.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

My threads come from Thrift Stores.

When I took the History of Rock and Roll class in college, the teacher put a lot of emphasis on Clyde McPhatter.

@austin If your last name had been Poore, do you think you'd be hosting a crypto-bro podcast instead?
Avatar 10:34pm
Mr Fab:

Mr. X: why was that? I confess to not knowing much about McPhatter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Scott67:

I have considered myself independently wealthy since being made redundant . Time & Freedom are my assets!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Austin Rich:

Those History of Rock and Roll classes are often, "I'm the teacher and these are the songs I THINK matter." I like Clyde, but that does seem as arbitrary as anything else.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly the Alternate Universe version of me is involved in Crypto in some really douchey way.
Avatar 10:36pm
Mr. X:

Mr. Fab, I think he saw Clyde's version of The Drifters as the quintessential transition between doo wop and rock.
Avatar 10:37pm
Mr. X:

Yes, teacher was opinionated for sure. But I still learned a lot.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Austin Rich:

I liked my History of Rock and Roll class, because there was a lecture on the influence of Country, and I wound up really loving a lot of old country I'd never heard before.

Austin Rich:

In doing my research today, I was shocked to realize that there is a lot more footage of Spike Jones than I thought... in film! He was in several movies I haven't seen, as himself, or they cut to the band and they're playing. So I have a new winter mission: track down these movies!

@Mr fab at 10:19 we have clusters of shows I think

Teacher's name was Paul Friedlander. Here's his book, Rock and Roll: A Social History. Only $160 bucks, speaking of money.

When this Sharon Jones album came out, I fell for it HARD. But I haven't listened to it much in the last several years. I need to get back into that habit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
MHLee:

I vistied the country hall of fame in Nashville and honestly found it much better at talking about the evolution and story of a genre than the rock hall
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

I work in a used bookstore, Mr. X. I'll see if i can find a cheaper copy.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

As I get older, MHLee, I find myself liking a lot more old country than I thought I would as a kid.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Austin Rich:

This is one of my fave Ray Charles songs, but he's got so many hits that it's really hard to pick.
Avatar 10:43pm
Mr Fab:

That’s interesting MHLee. The rock hall is more of a collection of memorabilia, isn’t it?
Avatar 10:45pm
Mr. X:

Brother Ray. I used to listen to KGO news talk host Ray Taliefero. He was friends with Ray Charles, and they called each other Brother Ray when Ray Charles played on his New Year's shows.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Austin Rich:

That's really cool, Mr. X! I do love Ray Charles.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Austin Rich:

See, Jack is really cheap...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
MHLee:

It is but it does talk a bit about it in the early influences section... it talks a lot about Alan Freed... but yeah it's more glitzy over substance other than the featured exhibit. The Country hall may have Elvis's Cadilac but also displays talking about the movements and counter movements through country history
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Austin Rich:

You could actually do you and everyone around you a huge favor by just listening to all of "The Formative Years" discs that they put out covering Little Richard's early career. Every part of those discs are classics!

A friend recently talked me into watching the Ken Burns country music doc. I have spent a lot of time since then educating myself and putting together country playlists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

Of course, I'm partial to string bands and the real early stuff, that being my musical background... that and Syd Barrett

I was so bummed when Sharon Jones died. WAY too young.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

We should do an old country show, Mr. X! That would be fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm

The anthology that went with the Ken Burns doc is amazing!

Agreed, Mr. Fab. Could have been so many other great albums.

I was skeptical before I visited the Rock Hall of Fame, but I wound up being thoroughly entranced. Those pieces of memorabilia have power.
