A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Have you seen the comedy video, F*** Me, Ray Bradbury? It's amusing. It's by the girl who went on to produce Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which I still have to get around to watching someday.

This mix reminds me of listening to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. Sounding great!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

I've probably listened to Douglas Adams read all five of the Hitchhiker's book endlessly. It was the only set of tapes I had for the longest time.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

Krys: I need to check that out!

I used to fall asleep to Doug Adams reading his books. My dad got the albums from the library and recorded the vinyl onto cassette for me
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm

Do you like Strawberries era? It's not as underrated as the Gothy stuff, but people sleep on it.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm

That era isn't bad. They usually have a few hits here and there, even on the "bad" albums.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm

(Sort of like the Ramones.)

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm

I'm a sucker of Sonic Youth. I remember buying this just before I moved to Portland, and then thinking this album was very "me in Portland." I would walk to work, listening to this album on tape. I felt very grown up.
Avatar 9:32pm
xapnomapcase1:

Re: "bad" albums, that's fair. I disagree with the people who think there are "bad" Ramones albums.

Mr Fab:

I revisited "Daydream Nation" a few years ago - held up great.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm

I think you're right about the "bad" albums. All of of "bad" albums are really misunderstood, or for a different crowd. I think Sheena is full of listeners who love "bad" albums.
Avatar 9:34pm

Sonic Youth was a mixtape band for me for sure.

"Brain Drain" is a slog but I heart me some "Halfway to Sanity"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

Brain Drain was specifically the album I was thinking of, @Ramencity! Ha! But I have a soft spot for it, too.

I say "Self-Released," but this were part of an mp3 blog that doesn't exist anymore, from France, that was presented original research, and offering "chronological" downloads of different punk singles, organized by region. I read a hilarious essay by the lead of "The Memphis Goons" who claimed that it was an essential piece of rock and roll history... and at the time of the essay, nothing had ever been released because it was only available on home tapes. Then this single came out... and later the whole "album." it's about as good as this song, for those who are curious...

Coachwhips released one of the most amazing live videos - all recorded at house parties - and you can barely heard the sound on any of the performances. (And, often, you can't really see the band.) It's amazing. They used to also do all covers under the name Roachclips, which I also adore.

Thanks, Mr. X! My only regret is that I couldn't give more of my time to making great radio.
